Where are these numbers in comparison to your fitness journey through college? Freshman, Senior, etc. As with any muscle group, not using that specific group for a period of time will decrease the output, but you will regain it pretty quick I bet. As a 60 year old I am currently where I was in my 40's in terms of weight, fitness etc, but way better than I was at 50 when I carried 20 more pounds and worked a less physical job. I will never be able to get back to my 20's......lol. Thanks for the updates. You will do well in life by being goal oriented.

I think the numbers are about where I was at or maybe a bit below freshman year of college. But I know for sure my endurance is way better than back then (those tests weren't really a test of endurance at all). And ya I'm hoping I can get it back somewhat quickly since I had it before.

Wow, those results are interesting. I guess you could expect the decrease in rowing prowess since hiking the trail doesn't involve much upper body exercise. But the ones for the 5K surprised me. I thought hiking those long distances every day would increase muscle mass in your legs enough to account for the lower heart rate. But you're still in great shape! The only reason you were able to hike the AT in 100 days in the first place is because you were in such great shape to begin with. Very few people can do it that fast!
@frankmularcikbeyondinvesting
@frankmularcikbeyondinvesting 2 күн бұрын
ya that's a good point. Rowing is mostly legs + cardio but upper body is a bit of a factor. I do believe my legs got stronger but at the time of those tests (and still now a little I think) my body wasn't 100% recovered from the thru hike so not at 100%. back to training regularly now so that's progress.

You're still working off that "ice cream bod"! 🍦🤣 Seriously, though, I'm sure your diet back in February was different than it's been the 3 months on the AT. Food affects more than just weight loss/gain. It will be interesting to see your results at the end of the year. 😊

Long distance Thru hikes are hard on the body and you were a relentless hiker. But then you made a valid point re low cardio training on your hike. But don't you think you upped your endurance game?
@frankmularcikbeyondinvesting
@frankmularcikbeyondinvesting 2 күн бұрын
ya probably upped the muscular endurance. But at least at the time I did those tests (and still now honestly) I'm not fully recovered from the hike so I haven't been able to see those gains yet and my decreased cardio fitness is holding those muscular endurance gains back.

You shouldn't be disappointed in yourself. You accomplished a major feat, in my opinion. You literally walked 2K plus miles in 3 months, the whole AT. Very, very few people would, or could do what you did. Try not to be so hard on yourself and take care of your body while you're young 😃✌️

Try running a longer run and I bet you will be able to hold the pace for longer distances. Once you start training for the shorter distances, your endurance gains from the AT will show up! I have run a 248 marathon, and I experience so much strength after a summer of hard hiking. You will, too!

wow that's seriously impressive! Ya I definitely knew the shorter distances wouldn't get much carryover from hiking but thought it would help somewhat. I doubt there are peer reviewed studies on that for something like the appalachian trail just because it's so niche plus most people don't do it as quickly. Obviously this is just one instance but like I mentioned in the livestream I gained back the 10-15 lbs I lost fairly quickly (but I was not really exercising during that period as I was resting my body). I'm just now after 2.5 weeks getting into a reasonably rigorous exercise schedule again (30-90 minutes a day).

I can see putting VA where you did based on mileage but for terrain, I would have thought a few spots lower. I think my biggest "surprise" was NJ though.... I would have thought a few spots higher...(I'm basing this off of thru hikes I've watched)... I, too, like having the mileage listed. ❤🥾🎒🌲⛺️

This was an interesting video on ranking the states! Most people don't consider the length of the state when doing rankings, I think. My only surprise was that GA was harder than TN. So, did you have a favorite state? Of the hikers I've watched, they seem to think Maine was the most difficult but was their favorite state because of its remoteness. Then New Hampshire was 2nd hardest. It's a very small sample size, though. 😄

Ya I think Maine was probably one of my favorite states / areas. The day south of the NOC going over Wyah Bald, Wesser Bald, Silar Bald was super awesome too. I did the AT in 2006 for $2600 so today I would budget $1000 a month but of which if you got it your going to spend it, some people spend upwards around $8-10,000 and a few can do the entire trail on $1000 so it just depends on who you are and how comfortable you want to be out there.

That was a fabulous accounting of the expenses involved because that’s always a question. Taking into account, that you sustained your effort and reduced the commitment of time to approximately half based on what I saw from other hikers you did fabulously. Had you stayed out longer the proportion of cost for equipment which is permanent would have reduced, and the consumables would have increased, but a man’s gotta eat. Day to day we are not in tune with the amount of money we spend on incidentals, whether it be a cup of coffee, an ice cream cone, or an extra pair of socks. Can’t remember a time that I’ve ever known what it cost me every day to eat and because of you, I’m about to find out. You were incredibly responsible and the money you spent on hostels or other lodging afforded you the experiences that needed to go with that amazing adventure. The tone, as I’m hearing it, is that you might think you should have done better, but that is so unnecessary just based on your mindfulness regarding the cost. Cut yourself a little slack and be proud of that number. And think of all of the pleasure you gave us viewers. Worth every penny.

Frank, Frank, Frank -- you had the absolute CHEAPEST AT hike of any hiker vlog that I've ever watched. I think that if I was still able to backpack, I could resupply at Dollar General stores the entire way and still stay under $3000 - $3500. It took me 191 days to hike the first year but I had 79 zero days. I stayed in 2 hostels and 2 motels and the rest of my zeros were in the woods.
