Day 86 2024 SOBO Appalachian Trail Thru Hike

The poor Sobos seem to pass through a "sting" zone in late summer and fall that the Nobos miss because they start too early. (It's all right -- if the Nobos are passing through NH & Maine in June or July, they have to suffer through blackfly season which mostly the Sobos miss. 😃) Every Sobo we watched has gottten stung at least once -- by yellowjackets if they were lucky or wasps or, if they are really unlucky, hornets. The yellowjackets are the most common since they nest in the ground and people accidentally step on their nests. The other two nest in trees. But don't come too close or they will fight!

Wow, I didn't realize there was a sting zone. Now that I've been stung I have noticed a lot more yellow jacket activity close to the ground, will have to wash my step.

Closest I came to dying was on the AT - stepped on a hornets nest (no cell service, no EpiPen due to doctors office screw up), had trouble hiking to the road, got a ride from strangers, and the ambulance crew saved my life. Glad you are ok, hope the girl you saw is good

Wow, crazy! Gald you made and I hope the girl did too. I feel like people got to her soon enough, but have no idea how to check on her. Thanks for watching, and let's both steer clear of those hornets!
