Thank you for sharing! I have always been interested in building things because I love modifications made between one product's initial design, to how they transform them over and over to be more efficient/suit a specific use. I own different versions of the same ear buds, shoes, tablets, and phones. The specifications by size and hardware are what matter to me most in a product; I'm an electronics sales representative and really hate to sell products to people based on price or bandwagon appeal (brand name). I would love a job like this where you make prototypes until you feel satisfied with the outcome, but a lot of people on KZbin who share their "mechanical engineering experience" tend to be whiney about lack of creative control. These people claim to want to create their own products, but if you want to do that, then I don't see why they don't tamper with materials at home. You can't expect a company to let you create products for them from scratch because that would basically owe the rights/patents to you as an individual and you could your own business. If you have a product, then there has to be quality assurance analysts to test the parts as they're manufactured, and I imagine that companies already have access to all of the information, so it is more efficient "not to fix what isn't broken."

Hi I'm a 7th grade student in middle school and have always loved design,creativity, and inventing. I took a course this past semester on 3D modeling and was very interested in it and got a 100 in the class and have found a career I would most likely enjoy and that is mechanical engineering. I was looking to see what other people have done with this job and stumbled upon this. I've never watched this channel before but after seeing this I am proud to subscribe and think this was perfect for me. 7th grade? It is good that you are already considering careers at a young age (not that I'm any older, I'm 15) but I think you are too young. As you get older and advanced to the latter stages, reality will start to glimmer in front of your eyes. Set something suitable and realistic for yourself at this present stage otherwise you will end up dissappointed.

Pretty happy I saw this video in school for ME and wasn't sure about it because of the type of people usually associated with the career. But the fact this guy can wear hats, earrings , and gold watches and be comfortable in a professional settings makes me feel more comfortable with my choice. Nicholas Bonafilia Dress code totally depends on where you work. I've coop ed at a place where all the male engineers wore blue slacks, steel toed boots, white shirt/tie and work jacket. I worked at another place where the engineers wore mostly work jeans, and a polo or dress shirt. And worked as a drafter at a small company where all the engineers wore khaki or dress pants and a dress shirt or polo shirt (no tie).

semir kasumovic What he is doing is not normal mechanical engineering. He is more of a design engineer or engineer tech. Most engineers are stuck behind a desk most of the time and occasionally get to do fun stuff such as hands on. He is also working in a workshop, has pierced ears, and is wearing a hat. That stuff wont fly in the normal professional engineering environment. My brother is a biomedical engineer and also a manufacture engineer. I have done an internship with his company so I have actually experienced it and its not at all like this video.

I'm currently enrolled in a community college and having a hard time deciding what I want to major in since I've never really had an interest for anything while i was in high school, all i really did was just take my core classes and electives. +kirk Lazarus III Just ace everything, finish your transfer reqs and get the hell out of there. Oh and get internships and talk to engineers. Don't just do it alone. Getting a job is just as much about your credentials as it is about your connections. I spent way too much time at a CC goofing around taking every physics and math class I could and wasted a lot of time. In engineering experience matters so much so get on those internships. ME is probably the second most in-demand field of engineering but if you can also do CS then do it because that will guarantee you good job opportunities down the line. If you at all like coding and algorithms then look into Computer Science.

Hello, great video. I want to be a product/industrial designer but colleges nearby dont offer industrial design and I cant afford to move at this moment out of my city. I was thinking I could take ME when I graduate this summer but what I really want to be is an Industrial designer/engineer... Would it be good or helpful to start with ME. A company I researched online wants a plenty of Industrial/product designer but they are required to have a ME Bachelor, so I thought "why not?" Also I was thinking before going to study ME to first get a Technical Certificate in Drafting and Design. Please, let me know of anything you can help with with in choosing the right path to becoming an industrial/product designer.

ID and ME are very similar and very different at the same time (If that made sense). ME will focus heavily on math and science, and only partly on the design process. It sounds like your more interested in the user experience which is more ID. I don't want to say you'll be learning a lot of useless info in ME but, ID will offer much more practicality in your interest. But I think studying both allows for the best of both world. Currently doing ME at WIT, with a minor in ID. Goodluck.

Angel Hernandez I am currently studying Product Design, and I was thinking many times how helpful it would've been to have studied something like ME. So it definately wouldn't be a bad decision. On the other hand, you would lose quite some time and it is not that important, because as a designer you can outsource work like engineering, the process of designing goes deeper than that.

This video is slightly misleading because it gives the impression that a Mechanical Engineer does a lot of hands-on work all day. Some companies do allow you to be hands-on often, but don't be surprised if you're spending hours sitting at your desk! If you want to be hands-on, work for a smaller company, or work as a manufacturing engineer.

+DrAvocadoChicken Math. Math can actually carry you very far -- not just in mechanical engineering, but in life. However, some people don't like to learn math, and they think engineering amounts to plugging numbers into formulae. Nothing could be further from the truth. Engineering is all about judgement and approximating the real world and it requires mathematical maturity. I'll be honest, it might seem hard or intimidating. However, if you stick with it and really enjoy it, you'll reach a point where the math is basically second nature.Those who struggle usually developed bad habits at the beginning, or never took the formal side of math seriously. You might be young, but right now you have the ability to start preparing yourself for a rewarding life that pays well compared to many others. As for schools, I'd probably recommend UC Berkeley!

Only some time is actually dedicated to the manufacturing because you don't just build an idea you have and see if it works because this would not be financially feasible

You could do it in two ways (that I know of). 1) Buy Windows and install it thru boot-camp . (You will have to reboot your mac every time you switch to another operating system). 2) Buy Parallels Desktop and run both system at the same time (Could slow your mac).

I mean these kinds of products don't strike me as the type of moving things I would expect a mechanical engineer would do. What kind of engineer makes products like, for example, alarm clocks?

Windy I don't understand the differentiation people are making between Mechanical Engineering and Design. But then, there are two different types of design in engineering. A Design Engineer like an automotive exterior or interior Designer usually will go to a Design School for that and will be mostly concerned with ascetics type stuff and very artistic. While there are many many other Design Engineers in the Mechanical Engineering field that design Mechanical components and systems ranging from Airplane turbines to oil rig parts or automobile parts or engines and hundreds of other items. Two totally different types of Designers but the latter type definitely falls under the Mechanical Engineer umbrella.

Hey I'm a highschool students and I want to major in mechanical engineering and do this type of work. But I heard you have to go through calculus etc and I'm not amazing at math. I've always wanted to do this type of job but I heard it's an insane amount of work to be a mechanical engineer.

Hi, I'm currently pursuing a BS in Aerospace Engineering. The math isn't as bad as people make it out to be, Calc is as hard as you make it to be, just go in with a positive mindset and be willing to put in the effort to do the work (do your homework!), even if you think you are wrong or it seems hard at times. In the end you will thank yourself.

Get a tutor, this my freshman year of mechanical engineering and yeah, I needed a tutor bad. High school math I got easy A's. Then i go into Calculus and fail the first test. So my best advice is to find a tutor, they help a lot! And I never used a tutor before university..

I'm in mech eng right now, its really not all that bad. First year is just basic math you learned in high school, and there are tons of friends and tutoring programs that can help you if you need the extra help. Great program though

ArcticCatsRock If I had high school to do over again so that I would be really prepared for mechanical engineering I would take as much math as possible including geometry, trig, pre-cal and some calculus if possible even if it meant going to tutors or summer school in my off time. I also would have taken a drafting class including computer drafting and more computer applications and programming. (I only took BASIC programming in high school but kids today are alot more exposed to computers so you might be better prepared than I was in that area.)

gacaptain To be honest, I didn't really have a lot of computer courses, in fact I am not very good with computers at all! I am good with the CAD courses, because my neighbour gave me lessons. The hardest part is math, but if you know how to do math, then it should be fine. I don't think I have a natural talent with math, its all just practice practice practice. The most important part with math is you have to practice.

Not sure about engineering fields but it is never too late to try programming. I actually know someone who was around your age 7 years ago and was a garbage collector in New York. He did programming during his spare time and posted his projects online and now he works at Microsoft. Anything can happen man! It is never too late!

He is behind the whole Beats business, thats huge, you thing corporates hire anyone to design their headphones? If they break and if users get angry The whole Company's reputation and market will be at stake. So mechanical engineers with good material science knowledge who know what material to use for different kinds of stresses are selected for this process. And it might be their current project as there are lot of works to be experienced in a Product development company.

Both make very good money. Choose what you like doing more. If you choose one or the other based solely on salary difference you'll probably regret it. That being said, both of these fields warrant at least a small amount of passion. If you're not passionate about the field, you'll more than likely end up being miserable. If money is your sole drive in life, nut up and head to Wall Street. Go to an ivy league and get into high finance.
