Exactly. Schools in China are completely different from many western counties. In China the best schools usually employ the best teachers and get the best students enrolled. Schools with good campus and equipment are usually private schools, they are usually considered not as good because of lack of academic resources. In the west private schools are usually good ones.
@FacelessQueenie4 жыл бұрын
@@runqianliu1295 not entirely, it's case by case. my sixth form in the UK is one of the highest performing in the country and the 'campus' (it's not a campus there's only 1000 students so it's small) had £12M spent on building a whole new modern building. I guess you could argue older schools are better and don't look as well kept because they're older. Private schools here tend to vary a lot too, some are amazing and others are average and the same as state schools.

@@asdfffs I mean, do we love our government? No, most of us don't which is pretty universal as politicians and governments don't always satisfy their citizens. But does the current government do well enough? To an extent, a lot of us do complain about policies and especially regarding the freedom of speech and the use of limited internet. However, the Chinese people in Hong Kong (as you said, they are also Chinese) are ruled over by their own Hong Kong Chinese governors, and they do live in a slightly different lifestyle due to the consideration of them being used to the western culture since Hong Kong returned in 1997. But does that mean they are not Chinese and should be separated into a different country? I personally do think it is similar to Montreal trying to be independent of Canada or that maybe one day Hawaii decided they want to live in a country called Hawaii and not the United States. If it was a peaceful strike against the limitation of freedom, I would 100% stand with them. My 6 years of education here in Canada do not think violent march on the street and attacking innocent tourists should be the way to express themselves. And again, some of the protesters wave the English flag and saying Hong Kong is not a part of China would be a completely different argument.

You should look into the specifics of whatever schools are in the are in the area that you move back into. These are not always universal experiences, and you should keep in mind that some schools are much worse. For example, my cousin’s school goes from around 8 to 9 in the evening. Also, extra-curriculars are virtually non-existent and summer school is (practically) mandatory. Note that this is in the northern provinces of China, so always tailor your expectations based on where the school is. I hope you do well in the future!

Most Chinese high schools have very long school hours. The ones in Beijing are atypical. My high school in Shenyang starts at 7am, 5 morning classes , 1 hour 15 minutes lunch break when we could take a nap. 4 afternoon classes. Then it varies. You can go home at 4:30 pm if you are in Year 10, 6 pm for Year 11, and 9 pm for Year 12 students, and for Year 12 students, we go to school 6.5 days per week. Only Sunday afternoon is free but we still have homework to do. I can still remember that crazy year when I rode my bike home at night and when the temperature dropped to -20 degree and I was singing aloud while riding in the snow.

For anyone who wonder about bullying in Chinese schools: Yes, it exists. It was the second year of my high school and it wasn't me. There was a girl in my class. She was small and, let's say not pretty. I saw boys laughing at her because she had some dirt on her neck and they were saying that she must have gone out without washing her face. They kept asking her if she'd brushed her teeth and washed her face. She looked down, lowered her head, avoiding them without saying anything. She didn't perform well at school. I'd seen her homework once, and she couldn't even copy the simplest character right (you guys don't write in Chinese so you might not understand, but getting every character right is really the basic and most high school level students can do it without difficulties. She was copying from the textbook yet she couldn't get them right). Someone told me the girl had been outgoing and popular before primary school, but she somehow became this miserable target for bullying and was extremely shutdown in her own mind when I met her. The students were either mean or indifferent or didn't know how to help (some girls in the same class tried to help her, but there was only so much they could do) , and the teachers simply didn't care. I didn't know her mother, but from what I heard she wasn't in a good form and probably had mental issues. The girl stopped showing up at some point because she was too scared of everything. She scared of the cars, the spinning fans, the scissors and everything. I don't think she'd finished her school. I was a jerk teenager back then and I didn't know better. I hope I'd known better. It's not the only case of bullying I've seen or heard, but the context of the other two are kind of complicated and I don't think I can explain well. So let's stop here. I hate to say that, but it seems that bullying is universal. It doesn't matter if you are Americans or Chinese.

About school uniforms. Grew up in China and attended an “ elite school”, we had been given two pieces of uniforms, a comfy but not so good looking sport jacket, and a chic suit for boys and short skirt for girls. Found out that most boys were too lazy to wear ties and they hated wearing leather shoes, and most of the girls were too shy to wear skirts outside the hottest days. I once asked a girl in class why she disliked wearing the school skirt, she said, first, she’s not confident about how her legs look, always felt that herself was overweight and didn’t posses slim and beautiful legs to wear skirt, and secondly wearing skirt was not practical for riding bikes or taking buses, where she was in constant worry some freak would try peeking into her bottom.

It's called "aluba" or in chinese, "阿鲁巴", or in cantonese"磨柱", or Happy Corner(different regions in China has different names for this), it kind of appears at anywhere in China, but not very often, including HK, TW. it's a friendly move when boys are hyped. it may seem dangerous, but nobody will get hurt, at least I have witnessed none. An example is when a boy achieved a very high score at an important exam, he might be alubaed by others. :)

Can someone who has been an exchange student explain to me how does he compensate for his own lost high school years, if the only thing he is there for is to learn Chinese and to teach them English? If losing a year isn't a case, it would mean that he basically skips/evades 90% of curriculum? In addition to this can someone share on how does one become an exchange student usually, I mean who funds this, exchange student or foreign school or someone else entirely?

Once I graduate high school in America, I’m going to go to Iceland for a school year because they have an extra year of schooling there. I’m going to I can keep my Icelandic passport (to keep it you have to spend at least 9 months in a row in Iceland, which is the same length as a school year). I’m also going so that I can work on my Icelandic and get to know how schools work there. I know and understand Icelandic, but not well - probably as much as a first grader mixed with a few middle school and high school math terms that I learned from my dad. Overall, it’s going to be pretty rough. To answer your questions: - for me, I’m taking a “gap year” between high school and college. I don’t know if you know what that is, so here: a gap year is a year between high school and college that is usually used to better decide what school to go to or travel around and see your worldwide options. For me, instead of better deciding a school, I’m going simply for the reasons I mentioned earlier. The fact that I’m going then means that I’m not losing any high school years nor any college years, I’m earning an “extra year” of learning. - My reason for going isn’t quite academic, although that is a bonus. I’m going simply to work on the language, like you said, but that includes learning how their academics work. I would have to take many many notes and go over them with friends and on my own until late into the night to be able to get where the other students are. I would still try my best to be academically successful because those classes introduce new vocabulary, spoken, written, and read, that I probably wouldn’t have learned otherwise. - For my experience, I got accepted to being an exchange student mostly through connections. The school I’m going to is the same one as the one my dad went to, so he is an alumni. My sister and I agreed to being exchange students when we were young, probably around 8 or 9. Although we were young, we still understood what this experience meant and how it would affect us. My dad contacted the current principle of the school, told them that he was an alumni, and explained what he hoped would happen along with the reasons behind it. After talking to a few other people who the principle guided him to, we were officially accepted. Remember that some schools might not have any experience with exchange students, so it might be a bit rough. Other schools might not accept exchange students at all because they are very academic and either don’t think the exchange student would be able to keep up or because they don’t want anyone new interrupting their students’ academic flow. Of course, many schools are open to the idea and are simply cautious. - The financial aspect of exchange students varies from country to country, school to school. It also depends on how you are connected with the school. Honestly, I’m not quite sure how my experience is paid for, but it’s for sure covered when you talk to the principle of the school you are going to and the others this you contact. - In an exchange program, you can’t forget to figure out where you are going to stay. I’m going to either stay at an apartment or with some family. Due to the fact that I still have a couple of years before the exchange happens, we can’t be sure that I can stay with family because they might be extremely busy or some other complications might come up. That is why we have the backup plan of getting an appartement. Family should be able to guide me through it and help me get set up, they might just not be able to fully support another person living with them due to time or money. I just wanted to say this so that if you are planning on going somewhere, you don’t forget about having a place to stay or you always have a backup plan in case the first plan doesn’t work out. Remember that every experience is different, so don’t base everything off of this one comment. Just make sure you get in touch with the school and get everything figured out for when you’re there so that you don’t have to be too stressed when you get there.

@@lenaatake710 I really appreciate you taking your time answering this through and through, even though I'm far beyond someone who can be an exchange student (soon 28 yo), so I've just asked out of curiosity, because in my country I haven't met anyone who went through this experience... Gap year is objectively a really good idea, because most of us are just entering the adulthood and not yet ready to make such huge life determining calls such as future university, profession or something similar. I wish you all the best and that you enjoy your experience in Iceland to your fullest. It will be a great journey and a big step up for you from the way how you are currently living, which will make you that much more independent! Had to respond to your comment, since just reading it, made me excited and happy for you and the journey before you. Cheers!
