Love this video! Simple joys of life. Looking for rocks, small town festival, fall colors, a nap, and spending time with family.

Aww yay! I'm glad you liked it. I was worried it was going to be a little too slow and chill of a day but I'm glad people are resonating with it!

As someone from a big maple syrup state, the pancakes without syrup was very sad. Almost as bad as putting that fake syrup stuff on them. On the other hand, the Mickey pancake was perfect! Thanks for sharing your mellow meanderings. Beachcombing is always fun. I think the pleasure of it has some link to our ancient hunter/gatherer roots. Thanks for sharing, Erin.

Haha I have a couple friends that tap their own trees and have definitely given me bottles before and are just shaking their heads right now! I agree on your beach combing theory, humans just love searching for interesting and beautiful trinkets in nature!

2:34 sit lower to the ground. You need to be parallel to the water. Whait for the wave to pass and throw so that the stone just slightly touches the water. Angles matter. Same as in the filmaking.

I think my original comment said something like: I'm so early, for once 😅 hi, Erin 👋 And now I'm about to go do some research on fossilised coral and the geological history of the great lakes. Also why are there so many claws? A defence mechanism? Nailed the Mickey pancake! Some beautiful shots of nature in this one 🌲🌍 I'm not a 'taker of nature' either. I prefer to leave the beautiful and cool natural things where I find them so that others also enjoy the privilege of appreciating it too. And it's not good for the ecosystem. Leave no trace, and all that. That definitely looked like a magical stick, the type of stick that the owner will want to come back for when they realise they've misplaced it. I wouldn't want to bring bad juju into my life by taking it, so I think it was the right idea to leave it. It actually looks like a stick from the subreddit r / sticks on reddit. Also, the top post from the last month on there is the cutest dog with a HUGE stick in his mouth 😂😁 Hope you had a good time with your mom at the spa.

Aww thank you for taking the time to type it all out again!! I know KZbin will automatically take down comments sometimes but usually I can still see them and "unflag" them. The Great Lakes are so fascinating!! and I just love the vibrant colors of the claws so they are always fun to spot. Yeah it's definitely super normal for people in Michigan to have big buckets of these rocks at home, and I have a lot of friends that are into polishing them and making them into jewelry which is cool! I just don't care for the clutter! and you're right, if someone else can see the stone again too, that would be sweet! I'm glad I left the stick too. My grandpa taught me how to do those carvings on it once, and its a lot of hard work so I hope someone comes back for it!! I will have to check out this reddit!!!

@@erin_elyse super fascinating! I've spent the past day nerding out over the great lakes history and environmental science. Newly gained appreciation of the Midwest for me, having not learned much about it during school or university. Happy Halloween 🎃

I did a lot of fossil hunting where I grew up in the Jura region (a chain of mountain between France and Switzerland that gave its name to the Jurassic geologic period). Ammonites, ferns, 150 million years old fish, that was fun. I could not help laughing when you said that you did not see the point of collecting rocks. My brother's house is full of rocks and fossils plus some meteorites. But for a good reason: he is a paleontologist and geologist.
@erin_elyse

That sounds so cool!!! Wow I would love to do some real fossil hunting like that!! Hahaha your brother sounds awesome, and not unlike one of my geologist friends too! If you love your rocks, by all means surround yourself with what you love! I guess rock collecting isn't conducive to living in a van lol

As long as I lived in Michigan, I always referred to those fossilized coral stones as "Petosky Stones." I never heard them called "Charlevoix Stones" but I guess that's still geographically correct. 😉 I like Meijers chicken noodle soup too, but I buy the cans with pull tabs on the lid. No need for a can opener. You need superhuman strength sometimes to pull them off though. 💪 Pretty cool hotel you stayed at with your mom. I've never stayed in a 2 - level hotel room either. Nice to see you travelling through our beautiful state again.
@erin_elyse
@erin_elyse Ай бұрын
Yes the Petoskey stone is very similar to a Charlevoix stone! Both are fossilized coral and look pretty similar. Growing up I always called them that too until I moved to the area and learned the difference. I LOVE when the cans have the pull tab lol because I always seem to forget my can opener haha! It was super nice to stay at a fancy hotel after a camping trip, quite the switch up!! I will have to do more Michigan trips. I find them very relaxing because I know a bunch of great spots without the hassel of being in a new place. Very homey!!

are Charlevoix stones different from Petoskey stones or does every town on the lake just name these things after itself
@ryanthomas2472
@ryanthomas2472 Ай бұрын
I was wondering too. I have a house in Charlevoix and I've never heard that term. Always Petoskey even in Port Huron. But maybe it is a different stone and I just don't know the difference. Either way, I love the Michigan videos!
@erin_elyse
@erin_elyse Ай бұрын
Yes it actually is a different stone! Both are fossilized coral, but from a different genus of coral. Charlevoix stones have a much tighter packed pattern as well, where Petoskey is more spaced out. I was hoping to find some Petoskey stones and talk about the difference but I could barely find any, just super small and hard to see the pattern! I used to live in Petoskey, where you can find them all over the place!! but yeah they can be found all over too!
