Excellent video! You can't beat Dr Green for cows to sustain their milk flow.

You could get a sleeper or two to stop the cows in the calving pen from dragging straw onto the slats, probably a bit late with the advice if you haven’t done it already

Can you comment on monitoring 430 cows calving? Do you keep an eye on things through the night etc? How do you manage first time heifer calvers?
@MCMilkingIt3 жыл бұрын
Cows are divided into three groups: early, mid and late calvers. When the spring up the move to different cubicles where they can me looked at more often. When they are about to calf they move into the straw shed. There is CCTV in the straw sheds and someone would usually get up during the night if needs be
@johnoconnell38423 жыл бұрын
But no individual calving pens? They calve in the group pen on straw? Any issues with calves sucking the wrong cow etc
@MCMilkingIt3 жыл бұрын
That's right calving in big group pens. Calves are bottle fed 3 litres of colostrum within the first hour or 2. We pool the colostrum so we aren't worried about calves sucking other cows unless they haven't calved. Calves are picked up 2xday and moved to the calf shed.

Super video again. Where did you get the round calf feeders? Are they JFC? And do you have to clean them often or just an odd time
@MCMilkingIt3 жыл бұрын
They are from Milk Bar. I really like them 👍 we don't clean them out that often as each feeder stays with its own group of calves

Your Cows don’t seem to mind you taking the calves away. I grew up on a farm and if the cows were parted from their calves for any length at time at they would constantly be mooing for them.
@MCMilkingIt3 жыл бұрын
Our cows are very tame and friendly which van only help I suppose. They are taken away within a day at least, normally less than 12 hours so they don't get too attached. Maybe they know they will be looked after well 🤣

Will ye expand more and do ye zero graze grass
@MCMilkingIt3 жыл бұрын
The current aim is to be milk around 420 cows, after that it depends on how the future goes and what opportunities present themselves. We don't zero graze

Our herd is mainly crossbred so we don't have any purebred jersey's. We milk through a 60 stall

Where do u sell ur bull calves and do many of them go for veal
@MCMilkingIt3 жыл бұрын
We sell all our calves directly from the farm and I don't think any of the calves go for veal. They all go to Irish beef farms

Why do u use a backhoe instead of a telehandler?
@michaelweld6763 жыл бұрын
Why not?
@MCMilkingIt3 жыл бұрын
It's a much more versatile machine. I ment to do a 3cx review video during the winter but never got around to it. I'll try do it in the summer maybe
