I have a dedicated detailing shop. It’s just me and my wife. We rarely work together on the same car. She does all the interior while i work on a different vehicle. At the end, we both go over each other’s car and complete the missing spots as we make fun of each other by saying “how did you miss that spot”?!! 😅 If we have only one car, we split our work. She does the passenger side and I do the driver side. We have our own tools on each side to work on the car that way we avoid wasting time looking for tools we used to share when we first started. Anyway, we really enjoy your videos.

In order for a detailing business to have sustainability, you really need a system whether by yourself or with an employee. Besides just doing a better job, the system will increase your work speed and turn a 5 hour detail for an inexperieced detailer, down to around 3 hours. Basically knowing when to stop cleaning and what is considered a good detail in 97 perecent of the public is also part of being more efficient.

It is challenging working with another. What worked for myself and my guy is that if hes vacuuming I'm working on cleaning plastics and try not to bump into each other. A lot of it to was when I hired my guy he came to my house and we worked on our vehicles and I taguht him things and different ways to do things. And that's when I worked on our system

Jess you are so cute, im loving your content, so real , its great watching another detailer learn their way thru things too! Hey, without criticism, i just want you to know, for me, i inform the customers i do not normally clean the headliners and seatbelt straps for liability reasons and if their detail demands doing it i make them “sign the line” i just recently did a headliner that had severe stains and smelled like pot! What i do is use Absolute at 1oz per gallon ratio and get my mf fairly wet with it and rather than spray directly onto headliner i gently rub the headliner that way and i have had some amazing results. Tuffer stains i bust out Terminator or xpress the same way, onto towel only. Doing it this way avoids inducing too much moisture into the headliner which can cause certain headliner types to later have material sag which if your unlucky can come back on you on down the road! Something to think about, in the same way i used PRO smoke n odor eliminator, it really helps kill smoking smells, give it a try & let me know if this works out for you, , ill try your seatbelt trick with Terminator. I love the p&s carpet trio , its my 1 go to, no extractor no steamer! Yea love it” also i like Xpress and i heard from P&S it does well not drying out plastics etc and leaves behind i nice sheen. Typically i just use it and no oily dressings. Good luck working with hubby, i understand allll that too well. I could relate. I recently lost my lil helper to nursing school & she got so good too towards the end, yea sucks! Seatbelt cleaning is difficult without a pressure washer. I have been able to extend the seatbelt outside the car and then pressure wash the dirt right out. Just do not get to close so you do not fray the seatbelt.

Just saw ur video love ur content continue grinding and inspiring give me a little heads up in the game for 14 years when you do seat belts just let your customer know you're not liable if they get an accident give you something to look into just to do your homework jess for your headliner because of the adhesive a chemical called doctor phone in the aerosol can works miracles prayers and blessings

No, I haven’t. I don’t think I would unless it was something that was a health hazard and I didn’t have the proper protection. If I quoted them a certain price and the detail is clearly more, I will have a conversation with the client, basically saying “this is beyond a ‘basic’ detail. This detail is more of a $___ job. I can do it in full to the newly quoted price or give you the originally quoted amount worth of a detail.” …if that makes sense. But I’d never walk away. I’ve had some bad ones too.

Oh shit....is hubby fired? The Blugator seat belt brush is the best tool I've found to clean seat belts. I was pleasantly surprised.

I like P&S products ( love the way they foam up) Just not crazy about there quick gloss detailer ~seems a little draggy on the paint ( I prefer Mequires Detail spray ) But P&S Absolute rinsless wash can be made into a quick detailer &smells AWESOME.

I just started using the ONR and can’t wait to use it for its multitude of purposes! I have not used the quick gloss detailer..I’m sure like most brands, there are good and bad to them all!

After I’m done with a detail my 9 year old daughter is my supervisor and I do all of my details at home since I’m not mobile and my daughter checks my work so she’s my employee but she does earn her keep

Hey there! I am BIG on getting face to face with people. I put myself in front of as many people as possible every day and find a way to mention that I am a detailer, without talking too much about myself. I also started volunteering somewhere as a way to network and I run FB ads, but I’ve only gotten one client from ads so far (I’m still fine tuning my ads and target area).

@@DetailWithJess Thanks for the advice. I do find the best way to find clients is face to face and then once the word of mouth referrals start going it can snow ball. I work at a restaurant part time on weekends so I have been dropping business cards at friendly tables that are local. Still working on getting traction with clients down here also. I think just getting out and passing out business cards is probably the best way to get started in a new area.

Employing someone is not easy to do well. The good news is nearly all of detailing is a process and a process can be standardised. For help with creating a good standard operating procedure have a look at "How to write an Operating Procedure to make money" by Paul Allen. This is a fantastic video which shows why most SOPs are awful and what a good one looks like. If you wish to work less hard and make more money, invest the time in creating good SOPS.

business licenses do vary slightly state to state. In CT, I need an EIN (well, that’s federal so everyone needs that) and I needed to register my business with the State Secretary.

Tip: let the seatbelts dry after cleaning, otherwise owner will get the smell of rotten laundry

1) Cleaning the seatbelts is a major liability. Chemicals will degrade the life saving fibers and can expose you to a lawsuit if it ever fails. 2) Driving the customer's vehicle on the road is another liability waiting to happen. Just saying, if you're ok with that right on but i rather not deal with that.

Thanks for the heads up! I don’t ever drive clients vehicles on public roads. I am in a resort with nobody on the roads so I wasn’t too concerned in this case 😉

Yep, pretty big liability issue. If customer insists I probably wouldn't use anything harsher than a rinseless wash.

Do yo detail often? You can use chemicals if you know what your doing.
