♥♥ OPEN FOR MORE INFO! ♥♥
Hi! I’m Charlotte and this is Milk & Honey Life…your home for all things beauty, nesting, planning, and lifestyle! This channel is 100% sponsorship-free, positive and upbeat, and welcoming to all. Thank you for joining us, and please feel free to subscribe for new videos every week!
Today I wanted to do something a little different and put to use all the fun tidbits I've learned from reading vintage books over the years! So I lived for 24 hours like a 1950s housewife: no iphone, no internet, no modern-day conveniences! Follow along as I do a vintage cleaning/housekeeping routine, cook all original 1950s recipes for the day, and follow a retro beauty and skincare routine. I hope you enjoy!
DISCLAIMER: I do not agree with the appalling lack of civil rights that dominated the 1950s! Even now, 70 years later, we still have so much work to do in the fight for racial justice and I absolutely do not take this lightly! Please help support the movement and ongoing battle to end State-sanctioned violence and end racism forever.
blacklivesmatt...
Love,
Charlotte

This was so fun and interesting to watch! Definitely made me laugh on the lay down for 3-5 minutes ... i feel like I would have been the 50s housewife who’s husband comes home to find her on the kitchen floor bc my 3-5 minute nap went overtime 😂 Thanks for all the research you did! Great video , love the 1950’s I think couples treating each other with respect and kindness is the goal . And how couples wish to live and what works for you them is the main thing . I love a clean home , a cooked dinner and a happy hubby so we help each other out as we both work full time . Your hair looked beautiful . Thank you for your videos x

I know this was written months ago, but I would ask you to consider who comes across as more powerful, a woman wearing a killer dress, beautiful hair and lovely makeup, or a woman with a buzz cut wearing no makeup and jogging pants? Which woman will cause heads to turn? Who really has the power? Just saying. 😊

(This is quite long, but I hope it gives fellow commenters a taste of what life was like in the 50s and 60s.) I was born in 1953. When I was around 10 I asked my mother why she didn't wear mascara like my friend's mother did. My mom replied, "Ladies don't wear mascara. Ladies only wear powder and lipstick." She almost always wore plaid wool skirts, short sleeved sweater tops, a necklace and clip-on earrings. Everyday she exercised with Jack LaLaine and watched two soap operas between noon and 2:00 p.m.-- "As the World Turns" and "Days of Our Lives." (The introduction was, "As sands through an hourglass so go the days of our lives.") It was the only television she watched during the day. We watched "Howdy Doody," "Bozo the Clown," "The Lone Ranger" and other children's shows. I despised Mr. Roger's Neighborhood because it was so slow and boring. I loved tomato aspic, Heavenly Hash (marshmallows, coconut, sour cream, mandarin oranges, etc.), Jello, Junket, Hawaiian Punch, Hi C "fruit" drink, "Fizzzies" and deviled eggs...and "Allegretto Cake" which is angel food cake, some vanilla icing (only on the top) with melted bitter baking chocolate drizzled down the sides. Yum! My mom made cookies for after school treats. (Most of these foods are from the 60s.) As kids in the summer we'd leave the house in the morning, come back home for lunch and then play outside until dinner. We'd eat dinner and then get together with neighbor kids and play "Hide and Go Seek," "Kick the Can" and other fun games. When it got too dark to play outside we'd come home. My parents added on 10 minutes a night each year to our bedtimes. I'd go to bed at 7:30 p.m., then 7:40 p.m., etc., but it would be later in the summer. It topped out at 9:30 p.m. which was our bedtime throughout high school. My sisters and I went barefoot all day long during the summer. Our feet got really tough and we could even walk on gravel without it hurting. We played "Hop Scotch," "Pick Up Sticks," rode our bikes and jumped rope. We kids were very active. There were almost no overweight children then. Our birthday parties were just peanuts with tiny pastel mints, chocolate cake, ice cream and Hawaiian Punch mixed with ginger ale. We played "Pin the Tail on the Donkey," "Duck, Duck, Goose," "Musical Chairs," "London Bridge is Falling Down" and other games. We wore pointy birthday hats and blew on paper noise makers that curled up and down. None of these thousand+ dollar birthday parties like kids have now. It was safe enough that we could roam at will throughout the neighborhood for hours. (We did have to call our mother if we went to someone's house.) We put our hair into rollers every night. Some were foam and others were metal with prickly plastic bristles. My mother would give us Tony permanents which stunk. My parents went to Bridge and Canasta parties with the neighbors. The neighbors were very friendly. I grew up two blocks from the Washington D.C. line in Maryland.

I always giggle when I hear someone mention Howdy Doody; as I asked my Dad (born in '51) if he watched Howdy Doody. His reply was priceless-"No way! I thought that show was too cheesy and childish...it was like the Barney Show of the 50's!" haha!!

You’re the first I’ve ever heard in the vintage videos to address the racial/gender inequalities of the time. Thank you for sharing!

Oh! Small tip: add 1 cup of shredded extra sharp cheddar to your pie crust recipe when making apple pie. Conversely, you can top the pie with cheddar MELTED atop the slice. That may have been the disconnect for your taste buds.

There’s beauty and tragedy in every era, we should celebrate the good things of the past (and today!) without the guilt of the ugly, it’s in the past and dwelling on it is fruitless. I love the 50s aesthetic; the clothes, traditional values, health/beauty/diets, music, daily life, feminine beauty… Marilyn Monroe!! It’s fabulous.

Growing up in the late seventies and eighties, my mom (born in 1927) gave us lunches like you served . She'd add a few plain potato chips on the side . The Charley Chips truck delivered a big bag once a month. Cottage cheese was considered healthy. And my mom was often on the phone. Shed wake early to cook my father a warm breakfast before he left for work. My grandmother made the mayo and jello "salad" for holidays. I wouldn't eat it. Also, you have to use cloth handkerchiefs. My grandmother would give me pretty ones for Christmas. I never used them. I also remember my mom and grandmother using a meat grinder they attach to the kitchen table.
