hi Iva, thank you for the support !! 💕well long story short, I have always been dental and never pre-med, for a number of reasons--personal interests/passion for oral health, the flexibility I found with the career choice in dentistry (which you can also find in medicine too, but it just depends on your preference!), length of education, lifestyle, to name a few. I have done some shadowing in a hospital setting and decided it wasn't for me, and I really enjoyed all my interactions volunteering/working in dental clinics. Hands on experience is a great way to figure out what you're more interested in! It was definitely not an easy journey, and I wanted to quit many times along the way and I really feel you when you say that you're going through a breakdown 🥺I had my fair share of those and I often wish I could go back in time to tell myself not to doubt myself and stop worrying so much, but if I can offer you some solace/advice, here are a couple things that helped get me through those times: 1) Shadowing/hands on experience, as I mentioned-- to see if you can really picture yourself doing dentistry/medicine every day 2) Mentors!! find professors, dentists, doctors, students...don't be afraid to ask for help and my DM's are always open as well! 3) People always told me, "it's not a matter of IF, it's a matter of when." If you decide that dentistry is really something that you want to do, keep working hard and trust that you will get in!! It took me 2 cycles but I'm glad I didn't give up and it feels very rewarding after all those times that I doubted myself. 4) Weigh out your pros/cons. Dentistry might seem very glamorous, but school is expensive, competitive and rigorous, alongside other demanding factors of the actual profession...but if you are truly passionate about it, then keep holding on to those reasons and keep reminding yourself why you chose this path! You WILL get there. 5) Find a good support system. Talk to your family, your friends, a therapist, a career counselor, etc. These people were very crucial to my success and they really helped me navigate through all the breakdowns, my career doubts and self-doubts. In the end, know that you will end up exactly where you are meant to be, and even if it isn't what you pictured, it's just another opportunity for learning. Don't be too hard on yourself and remember to enjoy your college experience as well! Have faith, I believe in you ✨💛

What grades do I need to get in dental school??
@joleencuisine
@joleencuisine 3 жыл бұрын
There isn't really a one size fits all answer for this as this varies by school and individual applications, but the higher GPA & higher DAT scores you have, the more options you generally have. However, dental schools will also take into strong consideration your extracurriculars and involvement! Here's a better breakdown of average DAT and GPA scores that I found that may be helpful: www.dat-prep.com/dat-scores-for-dental-schools.html#:~:text=The%20average%20DAT%20(AA)%20score,the%20average%20GPA%20was%203.55.

Thanks for your reply, right now I’m year 8 and I get to pick what subjects I get to do for my GCSEs I got a long way to go but I was thinking of being an architect, vet or dentist. There is not any subjects related to dentistry or being a vet so I’m picking architecture and I got science ,with science I can also do biology so I got a chance of being a dentist and vets as well. 👍👍

@@roshan3324 You're welcome! I'm not entirely sure how it works in other countries since I'm based in the US, but you don't have to be a science major to become a dentist as long as you take the pre-requisites. It can definitely be a heavier course load to make sure you complete all the courses for your major and the pre-req's for dental school, but in my personal experience, I was able to take classes outside of science that I was really interested in. Good luck with your studies and whatever future career you decide to pursue! :)

are you experiencing any back or neck pain yet?
@joleencuisine
@joleencuisine 3 жыл бұрын
yeah I do sometimes unfortunately 😢 it's definitely manageable with exercise, yoga and proper ergo, but I've always felt that neck/back pain was somewhat inevitable with long hours of sitting (even with studying/Zoom lecture). I go to OMT (osteopathic manipulative therapy) on campus once a month for pain management and re-alignment since dentistry tends to exacerbate one side more than the other depending on if you're right handed or left handed. But in all honesty, the neck/back pain was a huge factor that always deterred me from the career so I don't want to sugarcoat the physical toll that this career can take on your body. BUT I make sure to stand up/take breaks often in SIM, exercise regularly and use other pain management techniques to prevent chronic pain.
