@Orihimessocks Жыл бұрын
@@BulletMagnetJB ppl with connections (family with successful practice etc) or going to rural area can get out and make 200-300k right from graduation but if you don’t have that I recommend doing a military or nhsc scholarship. I’m doing Air Force now and they gave me like 500k for school and now a decent salary which is less than private but fine considering no loans and stuff.

I’m in UK so school only costs less than 10K for the 5 years so have enough saved to pay it off so tuition isn’t a worry! Not too fussed on trying to max out earnings either, think it would be good to work with homeless and people who use substances in a public health type approach. Obviously won’t be earning top dollar with that but just were my interest lies

@@BulletMagnetJB yea thats a great path also! not sure how the UK system is, in us there is scholarships for working in underserved communities and they'll give you tuition and stipend and in return you go to an area without dentists to work with folks who need care

Amazing video. It's really interesting to see the similarities and differences of the career between the United States and Brazilian POV. As a Brazilian dental surgeon, I had barely a cost to do my university, since I've studied at a public one. Yet, Brazilian dentistry is often ranked as #1 in the world. But even though we (as in _we who had public education_, private universities are still quite expensive) don't have such initial high cost, the high quality instruments and materials that are required to our practice cost waaay more than what it would cost for you at the USA, since we have to import them. So this problem of not learning about management during our dental school is quite a big one, good to see you talked about that. Also, the proliferation of DSOs is leading to market saturation, which decreases the quality of the service. More than ever the ethics of our class will be checked, since with less compensation, people tend to care less for the quality of the work and prioritize volume to make ends meet. It is also a misconception that dentists do not have to worry about death at their practice. In fact, dentists are the first line of defense against mouth cancer and must be prepared to handle emergencies during and after surgery, where there is a risk of patient mortality. It is quite common for us to treat purulent abscesses, which can lead to generalized infection if left untreated.
@toofy7253 Жыл бұрын
Hey, some dentists from Brazil have outcompeted us dentists in the US. They say our school system is bad. Can you please elaborate on this. I may try and make a video that compares the best dental schools around the world compared to our expensive 500k plus schools. We are having major problems in dentistry education in the US. Do you learn any specialty training like molar Endo and period surgery in dental school. I make high end dental videos and want to show the public some insightful info. Thank you for your comment
@malagus_ Жыл бұрын
@@toofy7253 I can provide some insight into the university system in Brazil based on my personal experience studying dentistry at the University of São Paulo (USP), at Bauru. Unlike in the United States, the cost of attending USP was very low, as the only expense I had was buying my own instruments. This was only possible because USP is a public university, even though it's practically the most traditional/prestigious university in the country. We take 4 years to graduate (that's a very unic characteristic of my campus, 99% of Brazilian dental schools take 5+ years). During my four-year program at USP, I gained practical experience early on, starting in my second semester taking care of estomatology patients, followed by performing procedures such as single root endodontics, small cavities, and prosthesis later at the second year. By my third year, I had progressed to more complex procedures such as surgery, including simple extractions or periodontic procedures like root covering and soft tissue grafts. In our final year, we were performing even more advanced procedures, such as third molar extractions, molar endodontics, and for a select few, implant placements. In fact, the last patient I treated at USP was a surgery to place four implants, that would later support an all-on-four prosthesis. Ok, there was the cost of living and eating, but we have scholarships and some programs to aid low income students. There is limited student housing, but for the demographic that ends up attending dental school, the student housing is enough. We also had a cafeteria, where we can lunch and have dinner for R$2 (yes, US$0,40) each meal. This price is subsidized by the government, only students can eat there. The food is quite good, but they are starting to tercerize the work at the kitchen, which is becoming a problem, since it has to be profitable now, and the system can't sustain itself at R$2 a meal. Most professors are internationaly relevant, at least in some level. Classes and labs are good, campus is quite small though, around 2k students max, counting under and post grad. The city is fine, 450k habitants. But since there is another public uni here (way larger btw, around 30k students) the student life can be good. Work post graduation is becoming oversaturated, since the city has become quite the Mecca for dentistry.

@@malagus_ thank you for the insight. I wonder how many molar Endo cases the students get, and how the microscope training goes. Here's an idea of how many procedures dental schools in the US have:. 7 anterior/premolar Endo cases, 150 fillings, 2 full dentures, 1 partial denture, 12 crowns and a bridge. 2 implant crown restorations. Students often have to pay patients to get their procedures completed, which can be expensive. Most likely no molar Endo, no microscope training, no perio surgery, no wisdom teeth removal, almost no moving teeth surgically, no flaps, etc. I think our specialist training is ok, but when factoring in the outrageous cost and time it takes to get through, as well as the bad culture present in our schools, it's not exciting. Let me know if you are interested or know someone over there who would love to talk about the Brazil dental school and dental system in more detail. I spoke on a national podscast last week about this topic, but I think Brazil's world class dental school is a case in point example that will make it easy for people to understand. I think a contrast video between the US dental and Brazil dental systems would be an awesome video for society to view. I worked closely with a dentist who I believe went to your school. He was in my class for 3 years and still good friends with him 10 years later. Dentists here are scared to speak out about the system, but I'm not. Thank you for the info!
@malagus_ Жыл бұрын
@@toofy7253 Sure, I would gladly expand on this conversation with you. One thing I didn't understand, you mentioned students paying patients. As in "the patient receives money AND dental care"? Here the patients are being treated by the public health system, It's free for the patient. This way, there is high demand, which allows us to practice a broad spectrum of cases. Of course, there is a waitlist for some specialties, since demand is intense, but simple stuff is relatively easy to have an appointment for, such as endo or cavities. And tbh I don't think I've done more than 50 fillings during university.

Life threatening emergencies in dentistry are rare, except in Maxillofacial Surgery where patients can often present with airway obstruction from spreading dental infections or severe trauma to the face. Rarely in endodontics files may fall down a patient's throat, posing an aspiration risk. I've seen patients swallow dentures in their sleep too. There's also the risk of giving local anaesthetic directly into blood vessels, asthmatic attacks and cardiovascular events during stressful procedures. These are rare however because dentists are good at their jobs. There is a lot that can go wrong, even if patient's life isn't threatened, so not a totally risk free environment. The fact that a patient can immediately assess your work also adds to the stress. This was a good video. Dentistry is really what you make of it.

I've been a dentist for 30 years and feel kinda sorry for the recent grads out there. Dentistry as a respected and lucrative profession has gotten so much worse than when I first started. Think about it. Who wants to come out of dental school nowadays hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loan debt to get a crummy, low-paying DSO job that's run like a sweat shop while working long hours, evenings, and on weekends? Over the last several years, more and more companies have cut healthcare benefits for their employees, esp. dental. People have less and less discretionary income these days. Meanwhile, dental insurance companies have barely increased reimbursement on most procedures, if at all. Over the years, I've seen so many dentists resort to committing insurance fraud to make more money. It's insane. I would never tell my kids to be dentists with the current state of the industry. There are so many easier and less expensive ways to make a living than dentistry. I would advise all you young dentists out there that unless you have a burning passion to continue doing dentistry, to get out while you're still young.
