I am not an open-minded person, and that's even thought I do some graphics design myself - on a minuscule level. Not nearly as positive or energetic a day as yours. I hope there's some learning for me as I think I know that there's probably sarcasm involved with the meditation part?! If not, then hats off to ya. Hey, Abs! 🙌 Can you spefy more what the difference of working in the biz vs on the biz?
@abiconnick
@abiconnick 2 жыл бұрын
Hey 👋 Yes of course! So say you have a design agency, working IN the business would be classed as doing the day to day work e.g admin, designing, working on client projects etc. Whereas working ON the business would be something like working on systems to better organise and structure the business e.g how I did with my Notion client portal. Another example would be putting together a marketing campaign in order to get more clients and grow the business so you can take people on to help. The main way I would define it would be, working ON the business is what makes it grow. I really recommend reading the book 'The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It' it really changed my mind when thinking about my business, plus it's quite a short book, really helpful 😊

Hi Abi. :) I was thinking: when you have a client how much time do you then spend on a project. Like how many days/weeks/months do you tell them that it takes before their project is finished? (I know that of course it depends on how much you to have make, but like how long does it take to make for example a logo design, and how long if it's also tamplates). And if you have several customers at once: Do you do a little on all projects in one day (for example, spend 2 hours on one project, and then 2 hours on another), or do you finish a project completely before you start on the next? I apologize for the slightly long question, hope you have the opportunity to answer.
@abiconnick
@abiconnick 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, so this is quite an in-depth question so I might not be able to answer everything. Each client project takes 4-6 weeks, I work on 2 max a month, and I stagger the start dates of those projects for example: one at the start of the month and the other project starts midway through the month. I like to dedicate days in the weeks to work on client projects so then I have time to make KZbin videos and other content. my advice to you... don't over think it, be okay with learning as you go, it's exactly how I did! See what works for you, maybe doing 3 hours of design a day works best, or dedicated days to online design might work better. You'll only know from experimenting, and also, enjoy the journey! It's fun 😊 Appreciate the support, thank you!

My best advice would be charge what you feel comfortable with and then raise it over time! x

Whilst the energy, enthusiasm, and presentation of the video is great, its very little about being a designer, a design process, or a designers real typical day. It's a blue sky ideal scenario. It's not reality. You and your sponsor sells the idea it is easy. A lot of new designers are going to believe this well crafted video production is the life of a designer. In real workplaces, in different industries, it's entirely different. This is a very rose tinted glasses view.

It's just a KZbin video, chill... If you look at my channel I have a lot of other videos that dive deep into my processes, etc. Like this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/havFpquGgMqnf8U And while this might not be the 'typical' designers day in the life, it is mine and I'm a designer, so why can't I show that?

@@abiconnick I am chill, don't take any offence. As a designer feedback should be something to get used to. I hope you don't say 'chill' professionally to people 😁. Your right, it is just a video, more about a social media influencer or content creator. But in the real world our days are not spent moving fonts about a bit and then doing KZbin. It's misleading.

Hello Abi, kinda confuse right now. In this video, you said you use about 4-6 weeks on branding but some of your watch me design video you spend less than 2 hours. How? Are they past projects?
@abiconnick

It's a KZbin video so it's been condensed down into 20 minutes or so. Plus a lot of the brands I create on the channel are passion projects rather then for clients 😊 Client projects are a lot more long-winded, like having discovery calls etc, so yes the whole process normally adds up to around 4-6 weeks!

@@abiconnick I will say all the tools used to achieved a project ( mainly creative tools ) . Leaving the phone and getting into "the creative zone" are great. I have noticed that it's sometimes quicker to generate ideas with pen and paper or simple drawing app on mobile or tablet than working with a "pro software." I have tried brainstorming using online software it's always slower than on a pen and a paper or on a simple small drawing app.... 😅

@@mekaclaude I'm not sure if there are any tools that slow me down but one thing I would say, I see a lot of designers starting out and they feel like they have to use a drawing tablet when designing, now it can be useful, but some people (like myself) are better and quicker just using a mouse. I think the number one thing that has helped me be more productive in terms of my process when doing client work, is having a system that organises and streamlines my business, and also having a clear and concise process of how I approach design projects. :)
