I like to put top hat washers on bath and basin taps where possible. I will also load the tap base where it meets the bath top with clear silicone to prevent water ingress. As the hawk white gets to the end of its life I sometimes add a drop of methylated spirits to it to loosen it up. I assume linseed oil would work just as well. Love the channel. You provide a great service to client and viewer alike.

Excellent viewing Doc ! Nothing more relaxing than watching someone else struggling when I've had a similar day 😀 love the brick top taps, fantastic !!!😁 I use the dickie dyer olive splitter, it works on 15, 22 & 28 👍 I gave up with the olive puller because most times some gorilla has tightened it so much it distorts the pipe and will never pull off 😬 the dreaded drain off washers !!! Now that's another story 👎 Take care mate and enjoy your weekend.

They're lucky one of those bricks didn't slip and take out the bath tub! I've used PTFE for years with no issues. I'm trying switching to Loctite 55 simply cos I can apply it to the fitting much quicker. Seems ok as long as you wrap on a few more than the instructions say! Thanks for the vid great stuff.

Scratching the threads with a junior hacksaw blade, notching the threads creating shark teeth, means that the ptfe doesn't travel up when you wind them in. You can even back off a little, like when you are fitting an outside tap and the tape maintains it's water tight integrity.

Drain off washers, Drain off washers, Drain off washers. I think that is clear to the young guys. I know you are a big fan of changing them everytime. It's Sunday, no where is open, you have sweated all day banging your knuckles and finally the last nut is done up. You pack all your tools away in the van, go back to pick up the hose, pull it off the drain off valve and it is like being Shot! That tiny drip that you know isn't going away. It's fine, you kid yourself, a little tweak and it will stop, so, like a fool, you tweak it and the drip gets worse. You can add the rest, another drain down, trying to make a washer etc

I got one of those Mastercool ones on amazon and my bloody last apprentice lost it, just ordered another last weekend. I'm not gonna lie it's really handy especially on pump valves, drain offs etc. Loctite 55 is very good on tails BUT you know what else is good and faster? Loctite 577. Didn't trust the stuff before but my goodness is that handy especially for those joints you can't wrap PTFE around or get your grips and spanner on. Trust me, start using that stuff you won't look back. I put in all the threaded connections on an indirect hot water cylinder in under 2 mins.

APPARENTLY ... the jointing compound deteriorates the P.T.F.E tape, according to some. I myself, have not been privy to such a result... lol
@rayc1503
@rayc1503 5 жыл бұрын
Na in Aus and USA they use both a bit of an overkill. I guess it helps the thread glide easier. Plenty of pipe compounds have added p.t.f.e.
@blackdog5560
@blackdog5560 5 жыл бұрын
As a plumber from Victoria, I can confirm you are correct, it is completely typical for us to apply a sealant paste OVER THE TOP of p.t.f.e on male threads on pipes & fittings, and equally normal to bolster any olive based joint with a little paste also..... overkill it may be, but probably cheaper than a call back at an inconvenient moment that has that knock on effect of you looking silly to a client..👍🏾

@@blackdog5560 I've been a plumbing & heating engineer 10+ years now. I use either p.t.f.e or jetlube V2. I've never had a callback for a leak on any of my own work. P.t.f.e and pipe dope used together isn't a major issue just a waste of time imho. Each to their own I guess. 😊

Got a question for you Dr Pipe! Sometimes when im fitting a new BSP Tail for the radiator, i apply the PTFE as your weekend assistant did, i then screw it into the rad a substantial way in. But when i tighten the rad valve itself sometimes i undoes the 1/2"bsp tail. If it moves a little way, will it be ok or will the ptfe not seal if its been undone even the slightest amount? Or is it that under no circumstances can you let the tail undo any amount from the rad? Or is that that i am overtightening the compression fitting on the tail, causing either the rad valve to rotate (gotta be vertical haha :) ) or loosens the tail

in the Game 25years... Why don't you have an apprentice?
@drpipe
@drpipe 5 жыл бұрын
tyrone Sylvester longer than that mate 😂 52 this year on and of since 17/18 ... arrrgh where to start...ummm I love the company 👍 just find young guys constantly want to tell me how better to do something which is fine but you must back it up with facts... generally it’s an idea not tried and tested. Also I’m very loyal and would feel very let done when they decided to leave... which let’s face it... it’s gonna happen. I never did that I learnt the hard way or the way that suited me thru hard work logic and ways I felt could would and should work ... cars bikes construction and life... and the odd tip. I’m completely self taught in all aspects of my life.. can I call KZbin my apprentice each one of you guys contribute to this channel 💯🙏 and with that every week I learn about you guys and what you may pick up on and what I’m doing right or WRONG and that’s a given I’m human like all that watch and listen. It’s soo Fucking Valuable to me on many levels can’t tell you . This business is tuff self employed and all the ups downs of it all. I have suffered in this business for a long time but now feel very happy and content. And I owe all of my viewers a massive thank you for that 🙏. You have the opportunity to learn from all of my Mistakes how amazing would you not say ? Best of all it’s Free 🤔😂.. I have an Idea.... send me an email please it’s at the back under community ok dude 👍 drpipelondon@gmail.com

Dr Pipe ah yes, the Plumbing & Heating business is a hard master. To quote my Boss from 40 years ago; “this game is famine or feast”. It’ll never change, however, I’ve never met a Plumber that’s not ‘flush’!!! I’m a bit of a Knipex whore myself you know👍👍😄😄 You & your lovely lady should do more traveling, you’re not getting any younger old fella & it’s an amazing world out there. Me & my good lady wife Olive Puller, are going to travel more in the next few years, if I can get her off the Gin & into the Priory. She enjoys a drink to the tune of three bottles a day, but hey it makes life interesting👍
