A few channels from India/southern Asian parts, have cobbled together 8 to 12 small engines into a single working unit, but always an inline style. Most of them seem to take it wayyy further though, machining out the blocks and then welding them all together, along with their cranks. Though, for a V, that wouldn't really be possible. HOWEVER, there are U engines which are two inlines that are then unified by a rear gear setup, with the main middle sprocket being the "output shaft". But that would've involved CONSIDERABLE work by G54, so I can appreciate why they went this route.

ummmm, disc/drum induction types cant. so just about every nitro RC type cant. cox 049 is about the one exception. reed valved. as these are piston ported, no issue... other than ignition timing. diesels can run backwards as well... seen a few tractors stall and "bump start" backwards... but i had a chainsaw do it one day whilst up a tree... that was a first. but ummmm... theyre all facing and rotating the correct way anyway...

@paradiselost9946Ай бұрын
@@Samqdf gravity? huh? whats that got to do with anything? yes, a float carb relies on gravity... no (modern?) chainsaw i know of has a float carb. piston ports are symmetrical, open at the same degrees ATDC as they open BTDC. reed valves act as one way valves. so neither cares which way teh engine is spinning. disc/drum is timed asymmetrically to open down near bdc and close near tdc. can only run one way.
@johnmorris7960Ай бұрын
You are looking at it wrong. They are oriented to rotate the same way. If a 2 stroke were spun backwards, it would breath through the exhaust and exhaust through the intake. The impulse may or may not work but the carburetor would still need to be mounted on the exhaust side of the cylinder.

Those carburetors have fuel input and return to tank. The little priming pump has to have return connected to gas tank. If you connected prime pump other way around so that it wont leak out when carb is pumping fuel it has return blocked off and it has trouble to bleed the air. I saw a problem early on. First, I thought that they would have the foresight to have individual tensioners on each motor. Second, they need to find where top dead center is on each motor, and have the pistons staged to cancel out vibrations. Third, I would go with a fuel plenum over the top, and have individual lines to each carburetor. That’s all I have at the moment. They should have done this in an inline four cylinder, first, for proof of concept.
@chrissaucier9386Ай бұрын
I'd synchronize them all to be at the same TDC stroke so it will run balanced
@JohnSmith-pl2bkАй бұрын
But that's not how a V16 achieves it's smoothness... each piston is at a different point in the cycle and each cylinder has to be "balanced" against an opposing cylinder's point in the cycle... and that's with a 4 stroke cycle. These are all 2 strokes... it will take maths to work this balance problem out.. and welding the cogs to the shafts wasn't a great idea... as the "clocking" of each pulley on each engine may have to be altered before finalising it's placement.... think of it as a timing belt...one tooth out makes a difference on 4 cylinders let alone 16..

Great stuff! I couldn't quite tell if they timed the engines together to minimize vibration. IIRC, a 90 degree, even-fire V8 is balanced well for three out of four of primary/secondary forces and moments, if there are four crankpins on the crankshaft. So I would time each group of eight engines that way. Then you could phase the two groups of eight to get a power pulse every 45 degrees. Not sharing a crankshaft might affect that, plus each engine has its own flywheel. Or just live with the vibration of 16 chainsaws running randomly.
