I was a Second Mate in the 1970's and it seems that the job has'nt changed that much. We used Radar & Decca navigator's as needed but deep sea it was sextants for morning, noon and star sights. Paper charts and I had to correct 70 folios. I enjoyed the life until we got made redundant in 1979

why do you wake up at 10 AM??? when I was 2/O I always get up at 11:30 for lunch and noon report, and do overtime after the 1200-1600 watch , 1600 to 1800 to take care of charts and hospital. This way you keep the same working hours as in port. Changing your sleep pattern from sea to port watch will just destroy your brain

At first I was super blown away this guy gets to sleep until 10 AM and work a normal shift. That was, until I realized a normal shift consists of TWO watches so he has to break his sleep in half. I simply could not do that. Once I lay down, I ain't getting out of bed for at least 6 hours. No way in hell could I do these 3 to 4 hour power naps and work. That all said, I do realize there is a rhythm to this madness and power napping for 3 to 4 hours and working for a few then napping again like this can be workable. But I don't have the desire or energy to adjust to this type of rhythm. Also, I get sea sick super fucking easily...

Hi 2nd thnx for uploading this video on Y Tube for common people to see the life of 2nd Officer and how the Navigation Bridge looks like and mess room, gym accomodation. Being a retd CE would expect you to upload more videos covering other areas of ship that includes Engine Room and activity during sailing as well maintainance operation carried out during sailing as well port stay, cargo operation, X- mass & New Year party and seafarers in Uniform. The videos should inspire Youngs keeping in mind the life out at sea is both rough and tough, full of responsibility challenging as well charismatic - - - - why I am saying this because I had 2 TMEs - - - one who joined other ship after S/off from our ship of the same company was the cause of massive fire because of irresponsible act and the other caused massive oil pollution at Amazon River - - - - finally found one day sitting on a small pocket singing " Swapna Mera Tut Gaya" because he only had known about the Rosy picture about shipping. Also upload a video of Rough Sea and life of seafarers onboard so that common people should know the contribution and sacrifice the seafarers are doing carrying out 99 % of world trade - - - - specially the Shipping Ministers and the officials who hardly have any idea of seafarers. Still I should say Thanks to you for your video - - - - do upload many videos - - - - will look forward for your initiative and contribution. Subscribed your channel.
