I always hated coding on a small screen so I would use the biggest screen I could get. Spent almost 40 years in IT as a developer and systems analyst and just recently retired. Am pretty happy that I got to make it all the way to retirement in IT since I knew so many who lost jobs and never got back into the field. Good luck with your career.

@NJcruiser
@NJcruiser 2 жыл бұрын
@@Guyc00l I worked mainly on what they used to call IBM midrange systems. Systems like the IBM 34, IBM 38, AS/400 and Iseries. All basically the same system. I learned COBOL, BASIC and RPG when starting out. Spent the vast majority of my career programming in RPG and its many variants like RPG II, RPG III, RPG IV and RPG Free. Later on I got involved in EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) which is the sending of electronic business documents back and forth such as POs, Advanced Shipment Notices (ASNs) and Invoices among a lot of others. The last several years I was mainly on PC based systems so used SQL and several proprietary languages such as the Simparel apparel package consultant suit protocols.

@@amans6504 It was an interesting time to be involved in IT I have to admit. Of course along with programming you were also responsible for everything else including keeping the giant printers full of continuous feed 'Green Bar' paper. You probably are too young to even remember those. I do laugh sometimes that I was responsible for writing and helping to write whole Order Processing (now called ERP systems) and back office systems for major corporations in the Fortune 500 and even a few Fortune 50 companies. And I didn't even have a computer science degree. Those were the days before widespread availability of off the shelf packages. Even when those became available you needed to get familiar with them so you could make modifications that all companies required in order to run their businesses.

This is the kind of video I was looking for! I'm in my first year of college (studying IT security) and i want to move in to Switzerland when I finish. What would you recommend me to do? What was the process like?
@iris-tabea
@iris-tabea 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting! 🤗 IT security is a great choice, it is crazy important nowadays and I believe you will find a job rather quickly if you are good at what you're doing :) As for giving advice, it depends a little on where you're from. If you are living in the EU, getting a residency permit for Switzerland is rather easy, you just apply for a job at your preferred companies and once you get a job offer, you will get the residency. That's what it was like for me. If you are from the US or any other country outside of Europe, I have to admit that I don't have a lot of knowledge. But there's a bunch of infos online if you google a little :) As for the process of the actual job application, there is usually multiple steps to the interview process: one interview in which they want to get to know you as a person, followed by one or more technical interviews where they ask tech questions and/or give you problems to solve. I hope that helps 😊

Hi there 😊 I usually book a room via AirBnB or Booking.com for one or two weeks to get a feel for the new city and during those first days I will try and find a place to rent in person. It is easier to choose a place when you can go there and have a look at it and also be able to talk to the landlord. To find long-term rental, I usually check out local apartment rental websites. Sometimes I get referred by friends, there were many occasions where I found a room because a friend of a friend was looking for roommates. Hope that helps!

Hi! Really interesting video! I have a question: did you have a master degree or just a regular bachelor degree when you applied to jobs in Switzerland? And did you have any prior job experience? I would love to hear about it since in my country (Italy) a bachelor degree (even CS) is worth nothing without a subsequent master degree. Whatever is the answer, do you think it's worth getting it to have more and better job offerings in Switzerland?

Hi there! I have a bachelor's degree in computer science and had no issues finding jobs in Austria and Switzerland. The job I had in this video was my first proper job after university, before that I did 3 smaller internships during my studies. I don't know the answer to if it is worth getting a masters degree since I don't have one so I'm not an expert on it and don't want to say anything that might not be true 😜Hope that helps 💖 Have a great day!

Great question! To be honest, I think studying law already takes a lot of commitment and time on it's own and I admire anyone who has the determination to do so.
