I'm not a software engineer, but when I first joined my company, the onboarding was very much "watch a video" or "put in a call with this person" and then they would just talk at me for an hour, without me actually understanding any of it. I made it about 3 days before going to my manager and saying "I can't do this, please give me something to do" and she did. I ended up learning way more and connecting with people better as well! I know I'm pretty lucky to have a great manager and that's not the case for everyone, but if you feel like you would learn better and contribute more in a different way, make sure you communicate it! ❤😻

I can relate to your onboarding stage as me myself is currently on this onboarding process. And i can say that your videos are truly inspiring and motivational. I have this feeling of nervousness as i need to get along with new team and also i need to learn new process and policies. Thanks for your tips! I just pivoted to a new team as a Frontend Engineer and I've been having 1:1 calls with my manager and onboarding buddy/mentor the past week. My introverted self would get so exhausted after a couple of calls but I'm easing into the role fine and I feel supported. Another thing I'm doing is documenting important things, especially since we already have a frontend doc but I will be doing a lot of refactoring on my end.

Joined a new team about 2 months ago, Impostor syndrome had me by the neck for the first 2 months, really felt super anxious and scared of tasks that I thought I wouldn't be able to do. Turned it into a positive scenario and realised its a good things as you can learn so much from this and really felt that I have grown over the last 2 months. I will say the hardest thing is personality clashes between members, thats something that does take time and Im only now after 3 months starting to feel more comfortable in my team. Would love to hear other peoples stories and also advice

One thing that stresses out new devs, or even experienced devs in new positions, is the fact that you will feel like you know nothing. Recordings of architecture design or diagrams can help give you an idea, but you will not grasp the product or system until you're knee-deep in it. I don't think there's any exception to that.
