What would you recommend for someone trying to break into the field? Take a certification course maybe?

Certification personally helped me get an introduction to the field of UX. However, it's not going to land you a job. You're going to have to work on putting a portfolio together, work on real life projects, and prove your value before a company will likely give you a chance. Certifications are expensive and they're not going to be enough information for you to jump into a job. Unfortunately, the job market in tech industry, especially in UX, is struggling really hard. There's not a lot of UX jobs out there, especially entry-level roles. I have my hope for the future of UX, but right now, it's just a brutal reality we're in right now. I think what can help the best is to learn UX through books, websites, content/videos, then try to practice it in wherever you're currently in. For example, if you're working at a coffee shop, you can see how you might improve user pain points of a long checkout line that's frustrating the customers. More of these real life scenario case studies you have, the better you can showcase your applicable skillsets.
