Come with me on a day in my life to see how I complete wildlife habitat assessments and other environmental science field work. I will also show you a peek into my field journal and what kind of data I gather in the field as a wildlife biologist in order to support the conservation of endangered species and their habitat.

Going through high school I knew I wanted to be a Wildlife Biologist, currently I'm going through my second year of college and was starting to have my doubts in the career field and actually came upon your channel in the middle of deciding whether or not I should change majors. Ended up finding out that you went to the exact same University as me AND graduated with the same major, just wanted to let you know that hearing your story was inspiration enough for me to keep going with my original plan :)

Which do you enjoy more, being on land or being in the water? Also- what animals do you find the most interesting? I wanted to be a wildlife biologist my entire life (I actually graduate in two weeks with the degree, I’m so excited) and when people asked me why I didn’t go into marine biology, these were basically what I answered: I prefer being out in the woods watching animals there rather than being on a boat or scuba diving. Also I have always been fascinated by mammalian predators and amphibians. I still love sea animals and love interacting with them, I just enjoy land animals more. I hope it helps 😊

@@ladybugjournal40 omg congratulations! I’m interested in going to school to become a wildlife biologist and I just wanted to ask you if a lot of math was involved in this career-that’s like the only thing keeping me from making a decision. Also does this career involve traveling a lot? Or are you confined to a single area your entire career? Sorry for all the questions I am very curious
@ladybugjournal40
@ladybugjournal40 3 жыл бұрын
@@jordansistena4662 @Jordan Sistena I definitely understand the math question as that's where I struggle as well and was a major concern of mine getting into all of this. There is some math involved as statistics is a part of the job. However, I find that it is manageable. When I took a class on biological data was actually the moment math started to get easier for me because someone finally put it into something I was going to use... not all of the 'imaginary numbers' and math theory stuff that still doesn't make sense to me. As for the traveling it really depends on the job you get. Most of the time you start out getting seasonal jobs and internships before getting a solid permanent position, however this isn't always the case. When you do get a permanent job it can sometimes move around a bit, either around a state or country. Though a lot of permanent jobs are long term research projects of a specific species or area. Hope this helps, and stay curious! :)

Hi! I just found your channel today and I love your videos! There is so much I would love to hear from you but one big question I'm wondering is how do you balance your emotional/spiritual connection with nature with your more logical oriented side? Another way to ask the question would be how do you get any "work" done when you must want to just savor the experience and play freely?
@kristina_lynn
@kristina_lynn 4 жыл бұрын
Great question! I take time for myself even at work. I definitely have to get through the number of kilometres/surveys by the end of the day but I do take breaks in nature to just enjoy. Some examples are I’ll take a long time to watch a bird nest, or animals playing, so it’s half work and half enjoyment. Also, in the summers I enjoy picking wild fruits so I do that as I walk.

Hey, comparing a CAWA and a MAMU is like comparing apples and oranges. I was hoping you'd say why the habitat of a CAWA was different from that of a YEWA - or something more interesting like that. XD

Do you feel like having a professional photo setup for wildlife or a drone license would help with job opportunities?

Not unless it was for a wildlife photography or maybe a non-profit communications position. I've never had any need to take professional photos of wildlife outside of my KZbin channel/social media. Drone could be more useful as they're sometimes used by surveyors but still not that common as there are restrictions around their use to study wildlife.

Are you afraid you might encounter a wolf or a bear and you are all by yourself? Have you had any experiences like that? What do you do if that happens? Love your videos! I am struggling to choose between Marine Biology and Zoology (I like what you do as a wildlife biologist) to study at uni in Canada next year. Was marine animals part of your course when you did your undergrads? Thank you :)

Hello, I am a freshman in college and I'm also struggling to choose between marine biology and zoology. I was wondering if you figured it out?

@@estelarodriguez7933 Yes...I ended up choosing something completely different -> Interactive Media Design. I'd like to help researchers in the future to spread awareness about nature and how we are destroying it. Hope you figure it out soon.
