Hey I'm a aspiring electrician that is still in Highschool, I live in Texas and I'm just wondering what kind of exams did you had to take. Was it more than one? And what kind of subjects were in there.
@cipher1167
@cipher1167 2 жыл бұрын
@@xmzru 1st exam; measurement like measuring with a tape measure fractions. 2nd exam; arithmetic that’s making calculations, exact calculations without a calculator, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. 3rd exam; I forgot the name of this test but it’s got it do with comprehension, you’ve gotta read some paragraphs and answer questions related to it, the paragraphs change entirely or just partial details and you have to basically answer correctly and with detail. 4th and last one is an interview with a company and you have to pass it too, they ask like 10 questions. My school didn’t require college algebra because their arithmetic exam was on par with it.

Great explanation of the importance of precise measurement to install a box between the studs. One suggestion, on repetitive measurements create a story pole. The pole will act as a reference to the standardized hight of a box you are installing for a switch, outlet, data etc... Also, the pole will avoid you having to continually measure at every location.

I sure hope you have more help than that if that whole place is getting wired. I’ve been doing electrical work for about 8 months and I haven’t started school yet. They have me alone wiring up multiple rooms at a physician’s building in Baltimore. Can’t say I haven’t learned a lot without school but I’m eager to start. I’ve waited 8 months just to get some background knowledge and I have definitely caught along pretty fast. Anyways I know how it is getting boxes set and running jumpers and pulling your feeds. I get so frustrated when I’m alone especially when pulling through multiple studs and trying to fish down a wall haha

This kind of job is a lot of fun if you like producing with your hands but in the middle of the winter around cold steel, temperatures can drop to -10 depending on region. Use a towel on your shoulder before moving strut and conduit against your neck at that temperature so you last longer. I feel I should also say that during my time, we were not allowed to wear masks without everyone having to have to wear a mask so we weren't allowed to wear masks. My voice got so gruff sometimes I called everyone I knew and they didn't believe it was me because I sounded like a cement mixer hahaha. The crew though it was funny as well. It eventually went away but I have the worst skin irritation to this day, psoriasis now. I can't do this kind of job anymore but I still have dreams I'm doing it I worked so much lmao. They even told me I had a competitive amount of accumulated hours towards early graduation before I got sick. Apprentices life, %110 until you see it on the back of your eyelids :)

Would you recommend staying in resi despite knowing pretty much everything including most of the code related stuff, or dare the switch to commercial? It's European style work trousers, they have several detachable tool pockets, electricians and plumbers generally do not wear tool belts in Europe, If you want this style of pants, check out "Catterpillar H2O defender" they are water resistent, have removable tool pockets, and knee pockets so you can insert knee pads (way better than using the strap on knee pads), they are affordable and great quality, there are other brands like "Snickers" that are way more expensive.

Yes as @Hatim 13 mentioned. They are European style. And as far as the caterpillar ones go. I currently on my second pair and I like the price but they do rim easily at the seams. My brother ( also an electrician) bought the blakladder ones and they seem to be holding up better but are waaay more expensive.

It’s hard to answer that question because it varies depending where you live. I work in the Bay Area which is one of the most expensive places to live so pay may sound like a lot but it isn’t. You can do either. Go to school, pay, possibly get some job leads or look for a company/local ibew and see if their appreciation program is open for applications. They will pay you to learn along the way.
