I've noticed that quite a few silent retreats warn that you might struggle if you have depression or other mental or physical illnesses. (The last one I enquired at was Vipassana in the UK) I was wondering if you have any insight whether it's advisable or beneficial for someone with depression to try a silent retreat?

I’m not a licensed therapist and it would totally depend from case-to-case what the circumstances are. Meditation in combination with any form of talk-therapy can be very complementary in helping depression, but I would speak to and ask your therapist what or which retreat they’d recommend. I’d recommend that you (or whoever with whatever mental/ emotional/ physical conditions) look for a retreat - silent or otherwise - that’s more tailored towards the mental/ physical issues you’re working through. Another way is to also look at who’s running the retreat and what their training/ background is. For eg. Dr. Richard Miller, founder of the iRest yoga nidra school I’m trained in, is a licensed psychologist and meditation teacher and the iRest organisation runs lots of retreats (silent and non-silent) every year. You can check out their events page: www.irest.org/events-landing-page they do have workshops specifically for trauma too. You can also try retreats and trainings by Tara Brach, another psychologist and renowned meditation teacher: www.tarabrach.com/calendar/ I think especially with mental illness, whichever retreat you’re on should have support from a team that’s trained in or understands how to support trauma/ mental illness. And before going on a silent retreat, perhaps a little bit of meditation practice might be helpful so you’re familiar with meeting aspects of yourself first. It could be too overwhelming for someone with depression/ mental illness to be “thrown in the deep end” without having had any form of meditation practice beforehand, which is probably why you’ve come across these warnings before. Meeting all aspects of ourselves - all the light and shade - can be really confronting on any given day… so best to be led through it by a teacher who has psychology/ therapy training alongside their meditation trainings especially when it comes to any kind of mental illness. It would be to the practitioner’s benefit. Hope this helped! ❤️
