One thing I wish Sonography school teaches is ergonomics and the importance of strengthening your arms and body and getting massages regularly. 80% of Soographers get on the job injuries within the first 5 years. I’ve been scanning for 9 years and 90% of sonographers I’ve worked with have pain in their neck, shoulders, head, back, and arms. Many had surgery in the shoulders or wrist, trigger point injections in the muscles or steroid injections in their joints. I love love love my job and the pay is great but the irreversible chronic pain I go through everyday is almost not worth it. That’s why so many sonographers go part time or per diem or quit altogether. Just be careful, take care of your body, do your stretches and exercises. Trust me. If you don’t, you will get injured.

I totally agree. Many techs at my clinicals have been talking about that. My teachers actually go over proper ergonomics with us in class which is good. But it's important to follow through when we actually get our jobs also because as you said the injuries that come are no joke.

I am a junior in high school who is very interested in the ultrasound tech career. I have been watching videos and researching online. I just went to my first meeting at my local community college for their Sonography Program. Now I can’t lie, the women at this meeting put a really bad taste in my mouth about the career which really made me second guess myself. The girls who are currently in the program said that they have no life and that the schooling is harder than those who are going to school to become a doctor or engineer. They also said that you use a lot of physics and anatomy, something that in high school is hard for me now- making me wonder if I would even be capable of making it into the program. I heard them tell stories that they lost relationships because of how time consuming the program is and that their only free time is to do necessities like showering. At my college it is only a 16 month program so yes it seems like working extremely hard for 16 months is worth it but they also said that you’ll be working 5 days a week, 8-12 hours a day and then end up working over time and on falls on your days off. This sounds very overwhelming and stressful. I know it’s a lot of hard work but the way these girls in the program described it made it seem like they did not think it was worth it. How accurate is all this?

Hi! I’m in the program and maybe i can offer you some insight! Truth is yes the program is hard. All Associate degree/certification Healthcare programs are hard. It requires that you study; and yes unfortunately that means you may miss some hang outs and events with friends and family due to studying. I don’t think the school was trying to scare you, i think they wanted to exaggerate a bit the worse attributes of the program so that they could weed out all the bad people. Some people go into these type of programs thinking they’re taking the easy wait out from becoming a nurse or a doctor but not realizing that you are learning a lot of information in such a condensed amount of time. You are learning how to help doctors determine diseases, abnormalities, helping figure out how far along a pregnant woman is all through sonographic picture. As far as the classes, take it from me. I sucked at physics and Anatomy, but i was able to conquer both in this program(finished With and 89 in physics and 87 in Anatomy last semester)The main thing to remember is, take it 1 day at time, study daily so things won’t get to overwhelming. The good thing with these type of programs is that you will have the same classmates for every class(your cohort) and probably the same 3/4 Instructors/teachers the whole time you’re in the program. So you will become really comfortable with these people by the middle-end of your first semester. You can form study groups, and most of all the instructors are certified Sonographers so they will know how to answer questions. Just think positive

I definitely have a life outside of school but it is all about time management. It is a lot of information that they expect us to learn in 24 months or less for other programs but it is doable. I would not let that discourage from the profession because everyone is different and has different lifestyles. Clinicals for my programs are 3 times per week for 8.5 hours per day then classes twice a week for about 6 hours. During our second year we get an extra day off which is great. It is manageable for me and I have no complaints. My classmates go out together all the time. We definitely have free time with our schedule. Studying can be stressful because it is a lot of material but if you keep up with classes you will be just fine! Most hospital jobs have on call, but they rotate those shifts between the techs. I don't think anyone I've met so far at any of my sites has been on call many times per week. Most have call once per week and sometimes they are never called in. It all depends on how busy the hospital is that you work for. If you really want to do ultrasound don't let that stop you.

Hi! I’m kelsi, I’m about to be a senior in high school and am pretty set on this job as my future career. I live in Northern Florida and am going to attempt to get into a school that has a sonography program in Orlando. I’m excited to learn about the differences between the cardiovascular side of sonography and the other generals. Hi Kelsi. That's a good idea to shadow a sonographer because the job does come with a bit of pressure on the body doing it everyday for extended periods of time. Techs told me about that being a con but many of them are still satisfied with the job, so its best to shadow and see for yourself if it's something you can do!

Hi I have a video on how i got into sonography school that goes over this kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJzYg2eamrdlr68 But the prereqs basically vary by school although majority of the schools have common classes to take. For example most if not all schools require anatomy/physiology 1+2, college algebra, english, medical terminology amongst other courses. These are courses that you must take in order to be accepted into a program. Most schools also require/prefer an associates degree first - so after graduating high school you could enroll in a community college and take the required courses for the programs you're interested in and go from there. Definitely contact an academic advisor to guide you along the way and for specifications on the schools.

My degree was unrelated to health and that's fine as long as you take all the required prereqs. I had between a 3.75-4.0 when I got accepted. For my program there are different ranges for gpa which gives a certain amount of points toward your application. Definitely try and stay as competitive as possible when applying to any program.

With ultrasound we just do an exam of what the doctor is looking for then we leave but nurses deal with a lot more and are more involved with the patients day to day lives in the hospital. I also did not want to be around a lot of blood and fluids because I can get queasy. You will see a bit in ultrasound from certain patients and procedures such as ultrasound guided biopsies but you'll get used to it and its not too bad.

Hi! I found a website with a few options that you can check out. They offer the didactic portion online but for your clinicals you will still need to go in person for each rotation. Do you use the pincher grip or the power grip when holding the transducer? The NIH recommends the power grip to avoid straining the wrist and bending it awkwardly but most of the images I see of sonographers are of them using the pincher grip (similar to how you would hold a pencil). Also can you alternate between your dominant and non-dominant hands or is everything always set up to favor right-hand dominance? I want to alternate (do you think someone would have enough motor skills/coordination to use their non-dominant hand to operate either the controls or the transducer?) I am very concerned about repetitive stress injuries. No amount of money is worth feeling like doodoo. Your health is your wealth! I want to know these things before I take the plunge. Have you talked to any veteran sonographers about their issues with repetitive stress injuries?

I do not use pincher grip. I hold the probe with my entire hand firmly. Stress on the body is definitely one of the cons with this field. Some techs complain about it while others are fine. It will all depend on how you scan throughout the day and your work environment. Most places that I have been to will allow you to rearrange the machine so you can scan on either side as you wish, but other locations that's not an option or it may be inconvenient because of the busy workflow. So overall, I have received mixed responses on the stress levels and it ultimately depends on you. The time you spend focusing on ergonomics will save you vs. other techs that don't really care and then end up with injuries down the road.

Your welcome! I do right handed at the hospital but my last clinic site I was doing left handed. It depends on which tech you shadow. I would recommend learning both but definitely left handed because its easier on the body. The main things i've seen so far before clinic was postponed, were leaks of the valves, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and diastolic dysfunction. Different rotations will show you more of other things like cardiac tumors, vegetations etc. And my most recent protocol was very simple- all the views in color and doppler and they also included mmode and tissue doppler, whereas other hospitals may leave those out.

Hi, the sonography application requirements are the same based on which program you are applying for. For example you would need to take all the prerequisite courses such as anatomy and physiology, basic physics etc. for a particular school (which you would probably already have since you have a medical degree) Also, at certain schools having a medical degree - you are allotted more points toward your application which increased your chances of getting in. The only difference would be the added international student documentation that you would need to provide to your school of choice for admission. You would need to contact the schools admissions/international department for information on that- but as for the requirements for ultrasound, they are the same, so definitely check out the sonography websites for the programs you are interested in to see the best fit for you.

I went to Broward College. The program was good and the clinical director placed us at different hospitals/clinics to make sure we see a bit of everything since some hospitals get more of certain cases such as mainly OB/gyn while others had mainly vascular/ abdominal cases etc. . Overall, I enjoyed the program.

Theres a sonography program at Florida National University FNU in Hialeah its private but it's the cheapest private option I've seen, or Miami Dade College if u want public. Also Keiser University. I live in fort lauderdale and those are the few choices available. The most expensive I've seen is Southeastern College in Miami Lakes their program is 46k but you can get a grant from career source to help offset the cost if you're low income.

Hey, first you would need to complete the prereqs for the program of your choice- each school has a different list of prereqs but they are the same for the most part. You can take these classes at a community college or any college level institution. A degree is not exactly necessary but it is highly recommended because the applicants to this program 98% of the time have some form of higher ed degree so you want to be as competitive as possible. My program for example gave preference to students with an Associate x ray degree but I didn't have that and I was still accepted with my bachelors degree and no health care experience. So different things whether its your grades/health experience/degrees will help with your application.

I took physics as a prerequisite, but during the program we don't do that kind of physics. It's ultrasound physics which is basically how the machine is operated. Don't let physics stop you. Pass the prerequisite for your program and you will be fine.

Hi I would not worry about the prior experience. Many jobs know the students gain their experience during the program. There is no lower level job under ultrasound for you to gain experience, only during your clinicals. Don't let that stop you! You can apply now once you have all the prerequisites and school requirements. If you could shadow a sonographer that would be helpful to you but it may be hard to get someone to allow that because of Covid restrictions. Goodluck !!

Some programs are 1.5 years, most are 2 years. You finish with either a certificate or an associates degree in sonography. Some programs offer bachelors degrees which would take 4 years, but all forms of certification are accepted as long as the school you chose is accredited and you pass your exams. Once you get in to a program, complete it (bookwork and clinicals ) then pass your certification exams, you can apply to jobs and start your career as a sonographer.

Yes you can get both but they are separate full time programs. So you would have to do one first then the other. Most ultrasound programs are 2 years and nursing is also 2 years with some accelerated programs being about 1.5 years or 4 years for BSN degree. These are separate professions though. Did you want to have 2 jobs at the OB clinic - somedays being a sonographer and other days a nurse ? That's a lot of will power but you can do it if you put your mind to it! It will take at least 4 years to complete both depending on the routes you take !

Hey. Yes for sure there are jobs that allow this. Usually as a new grad these are the jobs you will get. It's called per diem... where you work as needed. Most places allow you to choose your days but some places choose the days for you when they don't have staff. This job status is not full time or part time and the schedule is variable. Sometimes you can work 2 days and other times you can pick up 4+ shifts. So don't worry about that. It's definitely possible and basically the main schedule new grads get. ( cons are no benefits like insurance etc) but you will get shorter working hours like you want.

I believe the oldest student in my class is about 50. The main physical requirement is being able to help with lifting patients to move them onto beds if they aren't able to on their own. Also you will need to do a lot of walking and standing especially in a hospital setting. Each hospital is different though so some require less walking/standing.

Hey ! Yes I prefer cardiac because I like to concentrate on one thing and thats how cardiac is. If you like variety or get bored easily, then General would probably be nicer for you because there are so many different scans that general techs perform daily while with echo you just scan hearts all day.

I have never experienced that during scans since doing the program and working. It is possible but I do not think it will be a frequent thing. None of my classmates had stories like that either. If a patient has to they will usually give you a heads up so don't worry about that.

Chemistry was not a requirement for my program and a few other programs I know of. Check the school website for the program you would like to enroll in to be sure of the prerequisites because certain schools differ in the subjects needed. The main sciences I have seen in common across some schools are anatomy and physiology and physics .

There is no benefit to having a bachelors in sonography vs an associates in sonography. But when applying to programs , if you have a bachelors you will get prior in acceptance over students that are coming straight from high school. (Many programs do this) So in that case, your bachelors will benefit you but not for actual jobs after graduating because all you need is to pass your sonography boards and graduate from an accredited school to get a job.

Yes you need your prereqs first before applying. You can get your general courses anywhere and then apply to the ultrasound program of your choice. They will transfer the credits. Most of my prereqs came from a different school so that's not a problem at all. Also, some schools will allow you to take certain general courses along with sonography courses but they usually have specific ones needed prior to applying.

No there isn't much math. In physics we had a few calculations but it was basic math like addition and subtraction. Also in cardiac there was basic math involved but nothing hard/complicated

Out of curiosity, do you get paid for clinicals? If not where does your source of income stem from?

No we don't get paid unfortunately. I worked for a year and saved money before starting the program. Some of my classmates have jobs while in the program but that can get rough because most programs are full time- 40 hours per week.

Morgan Ashley true. Personally, I work only on the weekends so bascially I don’t have a day off 😂 but it’s worth it.

I saw mainly abdomen during my clinicals. But depending on where you work you could see more vascular studies and some hospitals have a lot of ob/gyn. So it all depends. But there is a good mixture of all.

I'm concerned about the physical aspects of this job. When you take the scans do you have to be standing? I've seen images of sonographers sitting while they scan. Can you move to the machine closer to the patient's bed so as not to abduct the arm as much? Can you raise/lower the height of the bed as needed to ensure your shoulders are level with each other?

Yes, most if not all places allow you to adjust the bed and move the machine as close as you would like. Many places allow you to sit but working in a hospital most of the techs stand while doing ultrasounds. So it depends on your work setting.

We have 8.5 hour clinic days 3 days per week and then classes two days for 6 hours. Summer we have clinic 4 days. I dont work but I have some classmates that do and its very hard. It's up to you how well you can balance your time with studying or even feeling exhausted after clinicals.

Hi! I already have a bachelors degree so I'm only getting an associates in sonography. You don't need a bachelors for employment, all that matters is that you are registered and have some form of education in sonography, so unless you really want a bachelors, its definitely not required for a job. However, if you want management positions like supervisor etc, then a bachelors degree is required by many places so you should consider that when making a decision.

Can you please help steer me in the right direction please, if you don’t mind. I am trying to decide if I should get my Associate’s Degree in Radiologic Tech that starts next month then obtain a certificate in Diagnostic Medical Sonography or, vice versa, which starts in the Fall. The end game is to become an RDMS but I’m 29 and I feel like I’m going thru a crisis😩😭🤞🏼 Thank youuuuu for your time!🦋

Hey! If your end goal is to be RDMS I think you should start that right away. Is there a reason you wanted to get the Rad Tech degree first ? I know some schools require it for sonography but that has been removed from a lot of programs. If you don't need it, then you're spending more money and delaying your true goal of becoming RDMS certified !
