Would you recommend me to finish my bachelor’s at my current college and then go on to apply to either of those programs, or should I not finish my degree at this school at all (which doesn’t offer DMS) and apply to DMS at Montgomery or Howard? Because I would essentially have two degrees and I would have to do two extra years to do the DMS program after I graduate and I don’t think I need two degrees to get a high salary in DMS. For my school and program, you can do your prerequisites in 1.5 years but people take 2 years. You don't need to get an associates degree of prereqs. This might sound like a silly question, but is Sonography dangerous? As in, because of the radiation exposure? This fear is what's causing me to hesitate in becoming a Sonographer (vascular), hah
@swedishshortsnout56103 жыл бұрын
No, it's not a silly question! In advance, sorry for the long reply. I don't know where you heard this information, but sonography does not use radiation. Therefore, there is absolutely no radiation exposure to you or the patient. Other imaging fields, such as X-ray, CT, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy, etc. use ionizing beams or radioactive substances that pose the long-term risk of radiation exposure to the patient/employee. FYI, like sonography, MRI is one of the other imaging specialties that does not use radiation to create images. With sonography, we transmit sound beams into the patient from the transducer. It is NOT considered dangerous to them or to us as employees. Don't be fooled by the talk of patient risks like "thermal/mechanical bio-effects" and "cavitations/microbubbles". These do not occur at significant enough levels to harm in diagnostic ultrasound. It never happens. Patient exposure SHOULD be kept to a minimum, but the effects would only become harmful if you cranked up the gain settings and held the probe at skin level for a ridiculously long time. After all this, there is controversy over these effects being harmful to the patient in the first place. I'm currently finishing my Echocardiography program and will soon be going into a Vascular ultrasound program. Someone with an OB ultrasound background might be able to better explain to you the fetal risks. In any case, this would only be with prolonged exposure over a long period of time. The same principles apply to all ultrasound modalities.

what was your major in university? bachelor or associates degree?
@KristyDMS3 жыл бұрын
diagnostic medical sonography is the major! however that is not offered everywhere! so thats why my advice is to always find an accreddited program by CAAHEP!

Is there a certain name for the people who just take ultrasounds for babies or do ultrasound technicians do that along with non pregnant patients.
@KristyDMS4 жыл бұрын
the name is sonographer! (registered diagnostic medical sonographer) you can specialize in different things. people who do babies is for OB/GYN or MFM. and regular non pregnant would be more in the general radiology department
