I absolutely love WW2 games like Medal of Honor, but this game is no doubt THE best multiplayer game. The fun is endless and I can't stop for hours.
@Bigmandembigenbydem2 жыл бұрын
I feel like the lack of a timer is responsible for making it extremely realistic at portraying WW2. It feels like you literally are going through 1000s of soldiers just to take one single objective. That to me, along with the rest of the freedom the game gives you, is what makes it so immersive for hours. Learning a new map is very overwhelming as a new player, and then slowly becomes immensely rewarding the more you realize how sightlines/flanks line up. (even with mini map it isn't clear where hidden sniper nests are on every map). It really feels like it was ahead of its time in 3d map design.

With Valve about to release Counter-Strike 2 it'll be a good marketing move for them to work next on remaking Day of Defeat and Team Fortress into the Source 2 engine. DOD can reach out to the history nerds audience and those who coming from other FPS fandoms like COD and Battlefield. It could also serve to one-up the competition with Valorant which is itself aiming towards a wider and diverse target market

@@Cheecken Agreed! Its a shame games that have followed in the games footsteps are DEAD DEAD. Day Of Infamy for example its pretty much on its last legs or grave. Something about Day Of Defeat has the curse to be a dying/dead game. Its crazy to me how the source version is more alive than its Day Of Infamy counterpart.
@Cheecken2 жыл бұрын
@@splashlemon2966 Day of Infamy is a very interesting case. I bought the game too and only mentioned but didn't go into detail with it as it is a game I am interested in covering soon. I think a big reason for why that game couldn't succeed, was that it went deeper into the simulation esque nature of hardcore shooters like Red Orchestra 2. Day of Defeat is hard to describe, as it is hardcore, but also kind of not. It is a very simple experience that is easy to get into but hard to stay alive in. I think Day of Defeat Source just scratches a very specific itch, which Day of Infamy doesn't. But this doesn't detract from Day of Infamy, I think the environment design and art direction of that title is picturesque to say the least, with the entire game feeling like taking place inside of a propaganda enlistment poster. I hope I can drum people together to play that one for a good few days, but I think that one will predominantly make use of bots for recording. And convincing people to buy a game that noone plays is always a hard sell :/

I played this back in the beta 2.0 HL mod days. This really was one of the best first person shooters ever! This was one of the games that I could play all night and never get bored with. The community of players was great too. Some of the best team play I've ever experienced in a game was in this one! The maps were some of the best designed that I've ever played in how they were very push heavy and you had to fight and work as a team to move the line back. A lot of modern day first person shooters could learn a lot about gameplay from it!

Man, I have so much nostalgia for the Source era games. Multiplayer was better back in the day. Endless custom servers with endless maps and mods, everyone talked, you knew the people on your favorite servers, annoying people and cheaters were simply banned by the mods. There was also something about the graphics of the Source engine that is super hard to explain, but they had this weird look that made these games feel kinda surreal. It was a similar feeling liminal spaces induce. Combined with the fact that there were these endless weird custom maps made joining a new server feel like being Alice in Wonderland. Does anyone else relate to this?

Source games wise, Day of Defeat Source is probably the most fun alongside TF2 pre-bloat. The casual nature of Day of Defeat lets you hop in and just grind away at the endless push and shove even without friends. However it is massively barebones. Missing the other allied and axis factions and even pacific theater. There's also just something missing system wise, with both gamemode and class wise. Like class synergy just isnt there. And there should be SOMETHING to actually break the endless camping (WW2 wise that would be aerial bombing, mortar strikes or tanks) If Valve ever did decide to come back to this 'arcadey WW2' game for a new edition, it would be something special. As is, it is a fun shooty multiplayer game.

Perceptive review; nice job. Thanks. Basically, the flag capture team objective is easy to understand and track in-game. This fact means that players who've not trained together can effectively coordinate to pursue the team's objectives. Also. no matter your skill, you can be part of the winning team. Further, even the worst shooter can be the key player who captures the last flag, with in-game recognition of this fact advertised in an end-of-round splash screen. The BEST public server team combat game ever.

The game never died though, it just gradually shrank, but yet maintains a significant and dedicated community, and a lot of newer or older players will jump in occasionally as well. This was an era when COMMUNITY ran servers, with their own custom maps and rules were highly valued, and like you mentioned it wasn't filled with BS such as "Grinding" the classes, lootboxes, unintuivive menuing, and so on. Just a very simple and easy to use interface, and you can jump right in and experiment with whatever you want. In my view, this, as well as the original DOD continue to the THE best WW2 Multiplayer shooters. The map are not so big that it turns into a slop of a running simulator, it's just the right size for the 32 player count max for just about any map. There are loads of experimental player designed maps and player designed "Game modes", like the gun game for example. It has empowered the community to thrive for all these years, unlike so many other games after it that claim to be so much "Grander", than DOD - like Enlisted, Hell Let Loose, and so on. They just fail to capture what DOD had, in part because they get so caught up in the "grand scale" theme, that they forget to make their games truly fun for their respective player sizes.
@Ohhelmno Жыл бұрын
God I loved this game, even played competitively at a high level in my teens for awhile. It was honestly the only place for awhile that you could get like decently large scale battles like on the beaches of normandy and such, and it was the coolest thing I'd ever played at that point. I wish it hadn't died off so quick when games like Battlefield came out, because it was a lot more accessible for players who didn't have good enough hardware to run battlefield or the right setup to fly helicopters or aircraft and such at a high level, but enough people left that it killed the competitive scene which then killed the casual scene as well unless you wanted to play in a handful of servers with cheaters and admins playing favorites and such.

This was my main game for a couple years but it was far too neglected by Valve. Imho they should have added back the Brits or.. Here's a wild idea - imagine if they added the Russian side? The gameplay was incredibly fun, but it just lacked depth. After maybe 2 years of playing it so much, I felt like it had run its course for me. And I never felt this way about Counter-Strike (I've played all versions of it). The few updates Valve releases for DoD:S were very much appreciated but just not big enough in scope. Also, I just have to mention the incredible community in this game. The friendliest of any FPS I've ever seen. Everyone in this comments section gets a high five from me just for that.

I personally wouldn't like a new DOD game, as strange as that sounds. Day of Defeat Source fills a void for me that no other game actually can, the mix of hardcore elements with stupid casual drop in fun, is something that is lacking today, and previous attempts at carrying on the torch of Day of Defeat, ultimately resulted in the creation of Red Orchestra-like experiences, where the gamey aspects were subtly replaced with the soft simulations a-lá Tripwire. The great thing about Day of Defeat Source is that in spite of Valve not supporting the game as much as they should have, the community prevailed, and it being an old Source Engine game, it can run on any system imaginable. What if servers go down? You can host your own. What if the vanilla game becomes boring? Download a community made mod. How do I get friends to play with me? The game is really cheap and I bet a lot of people could still be roped into playing this excellent shooter. I do get your idea however! It would be exciting to see what a Day of Defeat in the modern times would actually look like. I suspect however that if the formula is changed too much, we can see another Day of Infamy happen, where suddenly the spiritual successor of Day of Defeat, plays like something akin to Rising Storm. Also, its good we don't have knife skins and hats in Day of Defeat Source :P Thanks for watching and commenting :)
