I'm new to this channel and binge watching the series. I am super impressed with Dan and Kika's amazing range of skills: electrical, plumbing, welding, fiberglass fabrication, videography, editing, art and design, not to mention sailing, diving, fishing, etc! I just stopped to comment on this episode because of the sting Kika got at the beginning: I recommend clear Benedryl Extra Strength Gel for almost any burning, stinging, itching reaction. It really works quick on jelly fish stings, bug bites, poison ivy, etc. I take it on every trip. Fair winds and following seas. Keep up the excellent work!
@raepeterson79496 жыл бұрын
A bit of caution with benedryl use - when applying large amounts (ie the number of stings Kika had on her arms and legs and abdomen) - keep in mind the medication is absorbed into your system and can cause drowsiness (which can impair driving/sailing?) - benedryl is great - but you might use vinegar or vinegar/baking soda paste if you need to stay alert (also vinegar and baking soda are way cheaper and are more readily available). ALTHOUGH with large hives (like Kika had on her arms!) - I would consider using benedryl or hydrocortisone cream to help calm the body's histamine response - and maybe even take an allergy tablet by mouth too (again keeping in mind whatever you apply to skin can be absorbed so watch dosage)... sorry if a bit overboard, just the nurse talking, lol. Best wishes! Rae

Was going to say, love how much you actually sail, but didn't realize it was because of the controller overheating, know some people have complained about how much the boat is heeled over on my Catalina I had, but those people who always motor, and don't ever want to tack just irk me. Also glad to see you take out Lion fish, as they are a scourge, but a tip; they don't need a heavy marinade, as they are delicious with just some lemon and a sprinkle of lemon pepper,some garlic, and some butter, can actually make them taste almost like lobster, perhaps some lemon basil too. To bad you couldn't pull that net in, and I would have really tried..gotten any of it I could have even if it took hrs., as I dislike strongly when anything impacts the water life. And can't believe you met up w/Sailing Mischief! another really nice channel. But that cliffhanger of watching your boat being drug off was shocking to say the least! Hope it turned out well, and take care you two.

Hey Guys! Love your series! The little "stingy" things that love Kika are "sea Lice"....almost microscopic jellyfish. They seem to travel in clouds. Hard to see, but pack quite the sting. Stay safe!
@tedrenard4727 жыл бұрын
Hi Guys. About the bites/stings/rash. Check out sea lice and sea fleas, this looks very similar. They're usually present in higher concentrations on coasts near fish farms. Are you near a fish farm at all, even an inland one with an outlet. Try a dab with 50/50 vinegar & water on a small patch, see if there's any relief. Water over 40 deg C is worth a test too, but don't scald yourself. Glad you're publicising the cause against lionfish too, good eating and pest removal, what's not to like! Another great video, hope you manage to avoid the hurricanes, what a disaster!

So glad to hear you guys are safe!!! BTW, technically your "wine glass" is a Brandy Snifter, all be it a very large one, it is designed for trapping the vapors from brandy. As you inhale they accentuate the effects (and the taste) of the brandy. I assume it would have a similar effect with wine, but to a lesser degree since wine doesn't produce as many vapors as brandy! It also looks pretty cool!!!

Sorry about those skin burns Kika, it must be from stray shreds of jelly fish tail (hardly visible under water surface). The best remedy is to cut a fresh tomato in half and rub the skin with the juice and flesh. If tomato is not available onboard you can use vinaigre. One more home made remedy is sure to be available at any time but I can't name it here not to be rude... unless somebody asked for it. Stay safe and enjoy sailing :)

Anyways, here ya go! :) --Ever consider a collapsible scooter for your Island trips (Uber Scoot, electric, under 80 pounds) --Any thoughts on railings or nets for the deck? --Do you need a freezer, or does your styrofoam fridge serve well enough? --Any thoughts on a dog or cat to join your adventures? --A bolt-on swim ladder for the back of Uma? --Any thoughts on SCUBA gear? You have a clear cockpit locker now, a couple of tanks might fit perfectly! Again, sorry for the long message (hope you see it), but I've been keeping a list over the series. Keep up the great work..the quality and editing is awesome, and you guys are just fun to watch. Thank you for sharing, I look forward to what the future holds for you two, and (above all), stay safe...Oh, and put some more beer in that fridge lol! Greetings from Phoenix, Arizona :D

Ahoy there, of course I see your comment. When we have wifi, I literally go through every single on of them and try to reply to as many relevant questions as I can :) that's the point of being able to connect with you guys on YT and I will try my very best to answer your questions. Ok here we go: 1- We had bicycles in the states and they rusted so fast, we ended up giving them away to a good home. And once we left the states, we realized that we wouldn't be using them much anyway (buses and local taxis are so easily accessible in most places) We sometimes think about if we would ever need folding bikes again, and poked around to see what is available but so far we are not impressed with what we have found. 2-As far as railing: YES, we always had the plan to fabricate a solid steel rails. However, that was at the bottom of the priority list for this year, and so we focused on what we needed for where we are - because let's be honest, you really don't NEED a heavy blue water boat to sail in the Caribbean (its like getting a Land Rover Defender to drive in New York City) But we do have our list for our ocean passage next year (wink wink) and rails are definitely on the list. 3- A freezer would be nice for an ocean passage (for now everywhere we go has fresh produce and we do not need to stock up) but if we do get a freezer, we would need a stronger inverter. 4-NO PETS (too complicated) Although I have always been obsessed with sugar gliders (I almost adopted one back in university but the dorms had a no pet policy so... bummer ( BTW, google it if you don't know what they are . SOOO FREAKING ADORABLE) 5- Don't worry, Some super cool swim ladder fabrication drawings are already in our sketch books ;) 6- Yes we would indeed have the space for scuba gear. That would be suer cool But let's just say that "It would be nice, if it was a gift" (haha) I hope I was able to answer your questions, feel free to email us if you have more questions! Cheers Kika

@Grandpacarlreacts7 жыл бұрын
A Rottie, The reason why insurance companies will not pay out for named storms is that their policies usually require you to move the boat out of harms way. Failure to do that negates the policy. The expectation is that any sane person would move out of area known to have hurricanes. Just like Uma who moved their boat south and into safe waters. Even without insurance they were smart enough to move to safety.

Hate to be a nit picker, but that's a brandy glass. It would be heated on a device designed for that specific purpose, the large volume of the glass is to accommodate the vaporised brandy and would be inhaled while sipping the liquid brandy. I ordered a brandy in a bar, the young lady served it in a highball glass then dumped a pile of ice in it. The stunned look on my face must have been priceless. So the take away here is, if you don't know what something is meant for, just ask an old fart.
