While in Mostar, we took a day trip to visit the town of Blagaj. This place is famous for its dervish monastery (Blagaj Tekija or Blagaj Tekke) which sits at the foot of a cliff and next to the emerald green waters of the Buna River. Getting from Mostar to Blagaj is pretty easy (if you don't miss the infrequent bus connections like we did) - it's only 30 minutes by public transit and you can take bus # 11, 12, or 13 to get there. Be sure to check the schedule of the bus as we had the wrong information online and we ended up waiting over an hour to catch it coming to Blagaj from Mostar.
Also, be warned the food is REALLY BAD in Blagaj by the monastery. It was the worst meal we've had all year in Europe with stale poneta and water hummus that tasted like nothing at all. All of the restaurants, the five located by the river, have bad reviews so eat in Mostar which has great restaurants. Also keep in mind this is an easy day trip from Mostar and it should take no longer than 1/2 day to visit here including transportation to and from Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Day Trip to Blagaj Dervish House from Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina travel vlog script:
Good morning guys. Today is a day trip day. Yeah. We are going to Blagaj which is basically like a monastery in a cave by a river. Something like that. It looks beautiful. Basically and it is so close to where we are staying in Mostar.
We stopped at a bakery along the way to pick up a snack for the road, and then we crossed the bridge to the west side of Mostar to catch the bus to Blagaj.
We picked up a little snack along the way. This is post-breakfast. I got myself the mixed cheese burek which is really good. It is almost gone. Um, yeah but now we wanted to show you guys where to catch the bus to visit Blagaj.
Basically it is in front of this giant yellow building. It is called the United World College where there is a bus stop. here is a schedule posted right here at the bus stop. You can take the 10, 11 or 12 and yeah there is just too many times for me to read them all out. So just check it once you're here.
Alright guys so we finally found a restaurant. I was actually checking the reviews on the few restaurants that are in this area. None of the reviews are very high. Everyone says the food is quite mediocre. Um, so we've ordered. I've got some polenta with cheese. Sam got some hummus. Um I will say everything very overpriced. And I've already tried my food and it has not been amazing.
Now for the reason we had come all the way to Blagaj, that would be to visit Blagaj Tekija, a Dervish monastery which is tucked under a cliff and sits by the source of the Buna River. The structure is believed to date back to the 1520s and it contains elements of Ottoman architecture and Mediterranean style, making it a national monument.
Once we were covered up, we were able to visit the monastery. This mainly involves walking through a series of carpeted rooms with a few religious texts and minimal furniture. But I think the main draw are the views you get of the monastery from the other side of the Buna River.
If you visit during the summer months, you can pay to take a short boat ride into the cave. We visited in late autumn, so that wasn’t really an option, but we snapped a few photos and enjoyed the bright foliage.
We have finished our visit. We're walking back to town now to go catch our bus. Yeah. It is time for thoughts Samuel. Thoughts. We'll start with the most positive and it is just absolutely gorgeous setting. Stunning. Some amazing views every it is worth exploring in all directions. Walk across all of the bridges, see it from both sides and so on. The Dervish House I found more impressive on the outside than inside.

"It's awful." Haha, I think your honesty might be one of my favorite things about your channel. Restaurants catering to tourists are generally overpriced and underwhelming, and travel guides so often either ignore or gloss over that. But it's important information for smart travelers! Keep it up, guys.

I commented on this video 3 years ago when your balkan content first got me interested in visiting. Since then, I've learned Bosnian to advanced proficiency and am currently working in Sarajevo, and today I visited Mostar and Blagaj!!! :) unfortunately didn't get to try any of the amazing food you guys had in Mostar (and thankful we didn't lunch in Blagaj after rewatching this lol) but when I come home, I immediately went back to these videos to remember where it all started :) thanks for your amazing content ❤️

I give you guys props for going here and for taking the time you did in the Balkans. I watched your videos of the cities before we left to get a feel for what to see. We had a much better restaurant food experience for lunch than you did in late September outdoors by the river - beautiful. The bees were out though. I know you guys are budget do-it-yourselfers so you can go to many more countries. But we spent a little extra for a small mini-van tour (Funky Tours out of Sarajevo - rate them 10 out of 10), an all day one-way trip from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik via Mostar and a few other interesting and beautiful places including the Kravica waterfalls and it's nice to be with a cool intelligent who has local much knowledge and perspective and is funny. Our (Muslim good guy) tour guide gave us extra perspective on the dervish house where we thought they might not be cool with pictures so we kept our camera & I-phones tucked away. But the one round room with the stained glass stars in the ceiling was very cool. Our trip to Bosnia broadened our world view. Highly recommend.

Thanks for all that travel tips you shared with us. I am about to travel to Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro. I need some advice on the currency that I must take with me while touring in the Bolkan. I am taking with me Australian dollars. So I must change some A$s to I guess Euros, right? I first enter Croatia and then Bosnia and lastly Montenegro. Please advise. The currency from one country, say from Croatia can be changed in Bosnia I guess.

Truly appreciate the honesty about the restaurant! On a flip note, when will Mr. Drone reappear? Maybe, he will show up over the horizon. I realize he is probably more for the rural landscape versus the urban landscape for obvious reasons. The last video with the drone definitely gave a different perspective. As always, enjoyed the video!
@samuelandaudrey
@samuelandaudrey 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Drone laws are really strict in Slovenia and Croatia so we didn't bust it out there. We probably could have gotten away with it but I'm being more and more sensitive to the laws. Fortunately, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro are countries with more drone friendly laws so you'll be seeing more footage of that soon. I flied the drone a lot in Mostar (which will be shown on our guide coming out this Sunday).

There are two extremely good fish restaurants there. If you have spent any decent price for the lunch, you would have enjoyed it so much. Not even the locals spend $10 for the lunch of two people in a restaurant. That's so cheap. What you got there is a side dish, not a lunch. Probably your choice was to get the cheapest food on the menu. Also, noone rides a bus to get there. Not even the locals. Everyone uses the car. Tourists rent a car or use their guides. Renting a car is so cheap.

It's so strange to see a Dervish lodge in central Europe. I visited one in Antalya that had been turned into a museum. This things are cool, though this one I can see isn't as impressive, but still looks worth the visit. The one in Antalya had several nice exhibits, and it was really cool to learn about Sufism and the Dervish order. I find Sufism to be the most fascinating order of Islam, because it goes against so many fundamental principles of traditional Islam.

*Why would you order a hummus in Bosnia? You cannot expect it to be fresh since most of the people don't even know what it is let alone eat it so it probably sits in fridge for days. You should eat in restaurants something that most people eat and the circulation of ingridients is constant.*

I am from Blagaj and yes I agree that the prices are quite high in those restaurants. However, those dishes you ordered are not our traditional dishes, and restaurants only make them because of the influx of Kuwaiti and Arab tourists who refuse to eat our local specialties, since most restaurants are not Halal certified. I wish I was there and could take you around some less touristy but gorgeous parts of the town and nature around. Blagaj really does have a lot to offer, I just wish the info was a bit easier to find :D If you ever come again, hit me up and Ill give you a tour :D

Samuel and Audrey, thank You guys for great presentation of our city. If you ever get the opportunity to visit Mostar, it would be honor for us to host You and accommodate you in one of our many units, free of charge. Thank you for visiting Mostar, you promoted our city in a really great way and we are thankful for that. Of course, you were limited by your time and other plans, and you didn’t experience all the magic of our beloved city 😊 Shame you didn’t try for example, paragliding over Mostar, which is one of a kind experience, driving a kayak over river Neretva, not to mention off road and quad adventure amid gorgeous countryside of Herzegovina, also unique experience that sticks to your memory. Thank You guys again for visiting our city, we hope You enjoyed it. For the accommodation in Mostar and the experience that Samuel and Audrey showed you can contact us on our FB page facebook.com/mostarpropertymanagement/, our e-mail info@mostarpropertymanagement.com, website www.hit-booker.com/ , or phone number +387 63 834 179. About us - we are just city kids with playful spirit who have the luck to do what they love and who can show You all the magic of our beloved city and Herzegovina as well.

Don't feel bad about it for trashing it. It is a travesty of what you got served. It is not really reflective what Bosnian food is really like, which you already know. The polenta is served steaming with melted kajmak, crumbled cheese and lightly salted heavy milk. Also, some restaurants will try to rip you off on purpose.
