at around 3:05:00 that's actually one of my favorite things about wow. there are very, very few invisible walls. almost all boundaries are natural barriers like steep hills or cliffs, blocked pathways, or other natural obstacles. the best part is that the difference between steep but climbable terrain and steeper, unclimbable terrain is often subtle. This let the map designers put in several hidden-in-plain-sight paths that often only become apparent when a quest points it out to you as directions. so few games make the design of the world so natural like this, and it's odd to see a game as old as vanilla wow pull it off. it's really indicative of the level of quality blizzard was committed to when they were developing the game.
@Blackadder75
@Blackadder75 Ай бұрын
sadly they removed the old wall climbing, when you could climb much of the 'unclimbable' stuff anyway, with patience and effort and a bit of skill. 99% of that was innocent exploration, but I guess the 1% abuse of the method ruined it.

Hey Day9. I wanted to say thanks. I used to be a raiding paladin tank during the burning crusade and Wrath but I quit after many years because I kinda got some fingers cut in half lol. It doesn't bother me but I've been trying to fill the void that WoW left (the community especially) and after watching you play I decided to give it a go. Fast forward two days and I'm playing Wrath classic as a paladin tank and people are so decent it is crazy. I've missed giving newbies crafted items (the auction house wants a bazillion dollars) and buffing random people while I quest. Never would have given it another shot without being inspired by your video. Thanks again man :D

I think the reason why the minimal handholding is such a big deal is because it forces you to pay a bit of attention to the game. “Go to Goldshire” ok, I’m in Northshire, so Goldshire is probably south of here. It forced you to pay attention to the name of where you are and the name of where you’re going. It made you at least glance at the quest text through which you’ll gather some lore information about the world, which will draw you in further. Those things don’t seem like much, but it helps you get immersed in the world.
@h3rteby
@h3rteby Ай бұрын
One of my favorite memories is what a journey it was to meet up with one of my friends who played a night elf (I was a human). First we had to figure out to take the tram to Ironforge, we met up in Loch Modan, which was an even longer journey for him. That was like an "emergent quest" the game created for us, all because they didn't go with the "convenient" solution of free town portals. I played a mage btw so eventually I could cast town portals of course, which also felt really cool, having this unique powerful non-combat ability to help others. The flight system was also a cool design even though it was "slow and boring", the world would just have felt so much smaller if you could just teleport.

As per the question at 29:45, I've been playing on and off for nearly two decades. It's genuinely so wholesome to see you play for the first time and hear your excitement as I do my daily grown up tasks, kid me going 'heck yeah, I loved that too' every other minute. I mean just look at this thing, look at this game. No addons, no idea where he's going and what's where. The thrill of it all. Do you remember it chat? That first green item? 'the druid can turn into A BEAR?!' Seeing a new zone before any of the homies because you degened for the first time in your life and played until 2 am on a school day? My god man

My best memory ever was when I discovered a bug that allowed me to wander Orgrimmar without being PvP flagged, as a Night Elf Priest. It was so fun confusing all the horde players, and keeping myself alive while being attacked by guards. As long as I didn't target them, I could go anywhere. Then, surrounded by players dancing around me, a guard suddenly netted me to the ground and I died.

Watching you discover the game for the first time without reading any kind of information on what to do or how to make the best decisions is so refreshing!! I found myself trying to coach you on what to sell and what to keep and then sell on the Auction house. There were other things I wanted to tell you to do so you would have more money and let you know about training, not only with your mage trainer, but also what professions to choose for yourself. Usually Mages are TAILORS AND THEY MAKE THEIR OWN BAGS!!!!

One thing I've noticed when I'm not playing, is because I'm not focussed on objective after objective to level - I'm far more invested in the things like art, and music. There's an addon for Classic called VoiceOver that uses AI to read the quest text to you in very similar voices to what most NPCs use and even uses Dwarven accents etc if you would like to try it out! It made my replay though Classic and SoD a lot more immersive and fun! The quests will continue to read off to you even if you accept it and run off to grind so you can still get the full story without having to completely stop.

I started playing sometime in 2005 and have played very regularly the whole time since then. My girlfriend started showing some interest in the game around 2019 and i helped her get into it. The biggest thing i had to remember when teaching her new things is that i had like a decade and a half of experience with the game. I had to remember she didn't experience or know about things that were normal, no brainers, common sense, community agreed unspoken etiquette, or deep game knowledge you could only obtain from 3rd party sources like websites. That's all information that no one starts out with, even the community as a whole had to grow together to get to the point we are now. But as a long time player that information is so ingrained in my brain that it doesn't cross my mind that there is a possibility that someone else doesn't have the same knowledge of the subject. Luckily i guess i did a good job and never ran her off of the game so we still play all the time to this day, she has even helped me learn new things about the game. i was able to see the game again through a lens of a new player. I learned to tear myself away from the mindset of "if i'm not constantly making progress on my characters lvl then i'm wasting time". She could get distracted by a piece of scenery or a npc she hasn't seen before and a part of me used to be screaming internally "the quest objective is the other way!" but now i embrace those moments because i remember those were some of my most memorable moments early on. Ive learned to take the game more slowly. Its all about the journey, not the destination.

Coming from EverQuest, playing WoW for the first time was breathtaking. Everything about it was such a massive improvement to the playability of an MMO. Now, EQ wasn't bad, but it was clearly based on the old TTRPGs like AD&D and could be extremely harsh to play (corpse runs were no fun in EQ). WoW considered the playability much better, and the whole atmosphere was just wonderous. Wasted 5 years of my life since the beta on this game and I don't regret a second of it.

I'm fairly sure that the trade restriction is only until certain level is reached, you don't have to play whole month without using auction house or this game would be pointless to start as a new player as auction house is a MAJOR part of the game. It's only a bot limit for until I believe 10 or so first levels

Didn't realise you had never played WoW before, have fun. I feel you are playing the game in the best way without addons and reading the quests, I did the same during the pandemic with my undead mage. Makes you more connected to the game at least the first time you get to max level.

I'm glad you're playing this game, Sean. I can't watch the videos because it will trigger a WoW relapse for me, but it's truly something every gamer should experience at some point.

Where do you get your seemingly impressively large mugs? I'm a big fan of large mugs, but I have a hard time finding any.

Him still not having figured out that he can hit things with right click is infuriating and entertaining at the same time. Love seeing him experience the game as only a newbie can.

And that’s fine! Classic is more his vibe. Retail being more approachable and handholdy is good!

If somebody had told me in 2007 that one day I would watch Billy Corgan play a frost mage for completely free on KZbin I would have had a heart attack. What a life.

I want to backseat so bad!!!!! Having said that, this is the right way to play. Having a thousand different people giving you advice takes away the sense of discovery, adventure, and becomes too much information at some point. Seeing you entrance to Stormwind brought a genuine smile to my face and hope you continue your adventures in Azeroth.

Thank you for treating the game respectfully. You could have trashed it- by today’s standards it is eminently trashable- but you didn’t. You treated it like a time capsule and approached it with at least some awareness of how someone in 2004 would have approached it, and I really enjoyed watching you play.
