Those first two seasons where they actually had to try were really something. Nowadays the show is still good, but they let a lot more fall through the cracks. I think it's the audio commentary for this season where Dan Harmon talks about how he felt every episode needed to be perfect, and that the first episode he felt wasnt was Look Who's Purging Now. He expressed that the episode was still funny and people didn't really notice a dip in quality so it made him feel more compelled to let other "meh" episodes come out after; not every episode needs to be a masterpiece anymore, that's the main difference between seasons 3-5 and seasons 1 and 2. You still get enough masterpiece episodes to keep you watching, but the filler episodes between them clearly have less polish and it's easy to tell which episode matters and which one is there just to fill a space in the season.
