Moral of the story - handbags aren’t an investment strategy. It’s wild to me to think that people would consider handbags as such in the first place. I agree with your sentiments - it’s time for this wake up call.

They're not a financial investment as such, they're a wardrobe co-ordination and key focus investment. The returns on investment are looking and feeling fabulous and elevating your look. This can diminish over time or continue indefinitely depending on your attitude and whether the items are classic, high quality or just classic for your style. Returns on investment are the number of times you wore successfully. Multiply by the years held divide by the price to get a return on each wearing.

The resellers are keeping a lid on consignments they accept and just waiting it out rather than reducing prices. IMO this is a short term tactic since people will find ways around this including finding auctions, dealing with sellers directly or finding other resellers who are prepared to negotiate. I find it tedious beyond belief to scroll through a reseller's site to find the same old same old sitting there at the same old same old price.

For me, pre-loved is a way for me to purchase bags I either could not afford when they were new, or I did not know about at the time, as I only started buying luxury in the last few years. Or, more recently, the fact that bags seem to be out and then gone before you can get the money together to buy them. The trouble is, most of the bags I really like...well, they're both older and probably were either not popular (and thus not around in the wild), or maybe the people like them so much, so they're not being resold, lol.

Hi Dayle! I can understand why some luxury items are sold above retail on the second hand market, if they are rare and sought after. Some sellers play to gain a bonus, with the law of offer and demand on the marketplace. It does not only happen with luxury, let’s take for example the video gaming industry… However, most of luxury sellers should understand their goods do not fall info this category! Most goods loose their value as soon as you walk out the door of the boutique… The second hand market should be place to find good deals (i.e lower price for the buyer and a happy seller to recoup some money). When I see the second hand market now, with those price, sorry but I’d rather save a little more and buy new. ❤

Loved the topic as someone who never bought luxury until August of 2023. The pandemic sent me to KZbin and shopping for vintage Coach bags and one KZbinr straddled both vintage Coach and luxury handbags so I was introduced to luxury through her. With the death toll from the pandemic + my own mother passing away at only 70 years old in March of 2023, I started to feel the reality of mortality and thought "YOLO! If I'm only going to be on this planet once and I don't even know for how long, I should start enjoying things with the money I'm making instead of saving it for a retirement that could be much shorter than I envision". So yeah, for me the shopping and KZbin were out of boredom from the pandemic/lock down and the dive into the deep end of the pool (luxury shopping) was spurred by a sense of my own mortality.

I buy direct from the boutique or from resellers. I buy from resellers for Louis Vuitton due to their quality issues and the canvas seems thin. My 2015 Pouchette canvas is much better quality. I could write an essay on my opinion of some of the sellers on Vestaire Collective. I completely agree with you about not having to make your money back on things you sell, and it is infuriating when people want more than retail and won't budge on the price. If I'm selling something, which I don't do very often, I make a loss, but that's fine because what I have received I can use to spend on something else. So often I get into an annoying bargaining situation with somebody, and then I just decline their offer. A few weeks later, they come back to me with a new offer more like the price I wanted to pay, but it's too late because I bought something else or I've just changed my mind. I'm not one of these people who is looking for a bargain; I just have a limited budget, so I shop carefully.

In regard to the resale market, you should be careful with potential scams. I sold a diamond ring through a consignment site. I had this piece listed for US$150.00 well below what I paid for. It sold & I shipped it out. The buyer was very happy with the purchase despite the late postage. I was glad to get rid of the piece that was not serving me. The buyer was wondering what took so long with the shipping, but they did get the piece after all! The buyer could have got nothing too. The selling process was not that difficult, but it got me thinking, I do not want to do this all the time because reselling is a pain to do.

Unless the bag is special, or in demand, then any money made is a bonus. If the seller is selling a bag that they bought 2nd hand and they still want what back what they paid for it, on a bag that I don’t truly know is authentic, it’s an absolute no. I do not trust anyone to authenticate a bag so unless it comes with the receipt, I have to trust myself to know if it’s ‘real’ and that plays into the price I’m willing to pay. A seller needs to view it as if they were buying it too because they’d look at it very differently if they did that. If you ask a fair price, you’ll get a fair price.

I heard a few KZbinrs talk about ‘hanging on’ for prices to rebound and promoting an oversimplified version of the idea that the market is cyclical. Well the market is cyclical for standardised products but these are not that…This is fashion, not crude oil or bulk wheat and barley. Once the money is gone, it’s gone 💸💸💸💸💸 Bags are not an investment!

I try to remind myself that even when i would get very little money back from regret purchases, investing them at good stocks could actually earn me a new bags in 1-4 years, depend on the stock. But it might be better to just take the hit on " losing money" by selling the bag, the bag sitting in the wardrobe that i dont like would not increase possibilities.

Exactly! Possibilities are limited with items on a shelf getting dusty!

I find the whole concept of reselling to get your money back so bizarre. I’ve never bought a bag taking into consideration how much I would recoup if I sold it because I buy bags to keep forever. The thought of trying to get my money back (selling what I paid or more) feels morally wrong (to me..each to their own). I would never want to buy a used bag for what someone else paid when they have worn it and stored it during the time they owned it. If I sold a bag I would have a hard time asking money for it but if it was in new/near new condition I would price it for at least half if not more than half of what I paid and if it were old/heavily used I would actually feel better just donating it instead. I really think people need to adjust their expectations regarding selling items they have owned and used.

Yes it’s an odd entitlement mentality in my view thinking because we have made ourselves uncomfortable buying it we should be able to offset that with recouping the impact of a bad decision.

It’s like a car. Depreciation the minute you pull out of the dealer lot. I don’t get it. It’s a used bag, who knows what was in it, seriously. If I get 50% of what I paid I think that’s fair.

I look for second hand because I can't afford full price from store and just hope that someone wealthy has fallen out of love with their pieces and selling it for chump change so us povo folk can maybe score a bargain 😂

My bags are an investment in joy ❤ Profits usually come from luck or a really looooong game. Knowing they hold a reasonable portion of the purchase price is good enough for me 😉

Me too, such a great bonus to get a good deal back after using and enjoying them!
