I live in zone 7 and don't chill them. I collect now, then winter sow in water jugs. I get good plants first year and sometimes flowers.

I sure didn’t know they could be planted, always thought they’d steal too much from the plant and popped them off right away. Always dropped them into the bed but nope, didn’t plant them! Thanks so much!

So nice to know my germination rates are so low because I harvest the seeds after the pods have dried completely. Also, you are so right it usually takes 3 years to get a bloom and see what the flower is. Knowing how long it takes one would think I would just quit collecting them but nevertheless I do it every year. 🧐 More than 15 years ago I had a Stella D’oro bloom the year it was planted, and never since!

As you well know, growing daylilies from seed is not for those without patience! We love the "trial and error" aspect of it, though!

Awesome video thank you! I’ve seen those seed heads so many times and wondered if I could harvest and then plant them. I’m gonna try it for sure. This is exciting‼️

When you leave the seed pods on the plants it does take some nutrition from the plant. Therefore I just cut off the spent blossem stalks as far down as I can. I find that the varieties that are refered to as "evergreen" (meaning that they do not go dormant at they bloom) will bloom much more and grow more vigorously than when the old stalks with seed pods are left growing on the plant.

I live in Alberta, Canada, in a Zone 3/4 and I have been growing daylilies for many years. Some of my daylilies did not bloom but like magic, they are finally sending out beautiful blossoms. I have always wondered how to propagate them from seed, and your video is very informative. Not all my daylilies are making pods and I have noticed that I am not getting any babies from the seeds that fall to the ground. Thank you for making this excellent video!

I just ran across your channel and you confirmed what I had thought to be so about the seeds. I would imagine it’s like that for any flower that produces seed pods like peonies for example. I’m going to give it a try when pods come out for both the lilies and peonies. It’s the end of June 2024 right now. I live in northern Vermont and my day lilies are just starting to open some flowers. I just like to add you are quite pleasing to the eye! Handsome man you are.

I really love all of these daylily hybridizing videos. They have been super useful to me and you explain things beautifully. Thank you so much for putting this out there. I will have a lot of seeds because I have gone nuts, cross pollinating everything, the first day Lily I germinated was a fluke and I still don't know what it looks like lol but this year I was intentional in my crosses and though I was not able to keep track of everything that I crossed, I have some really cool colors on the plants that I already have so being able to mix any of them I think will make delightful crosses. If I plant them all inside After I can harvest them and give them light and at least above freezing temperatures after I stratify them, since I live in zone 4b , Is that a possibility that I can cut the waiting time down at all?
@OakesDaylilies
@OakesDaylilies Жыл бұрын
If you get them started inside this summer/fall, just keep them from really cold temps over the winter (they won't mind being exposed to some cold temps), and that should help you speed up the time before they're ready to bloom. (Probably still going to be year after next.)

I do this every year and you would be surprised with the variations from the parent plants. From one orange parent, I have gotten peach, yellow, rose and a bi-color orange and yellow. I guess you never know what they might have been pollinated with.

You described the type of soil to best plant the daylilies' seeds but please, how deep do you plant the harvested seeds?
@OakesDaylilies
@OakesDaylilies Жыл бұрын
That's a great question! Daylilies don't like to be planted too deeply. 1/2" to 3/4" is plenty deep enough for them.

We have wild and hybrid daylilies. Is it worthwhile to save seeds or will they likely regress? Wild ones have only one window they bloom in, whereas the hybrids bloom much longer, especially after deadheading. Leery about getting short window varieties. Thanks!
