Wow, you look great ! -- now my comment ............. every part is played by 1 guy, Tom Scholz, who also wrote this and most of Boston's songs and in fact had to build a band to tour to play in public - he also edited and mixed this song and the entire album ( co0nsidered to be one of the best "mixed" of all time ) - the album became the biggest selling debut album at the time, a title it still holds today. Yom was an engineer at IBM and invented many of the e3lectronic devices many bands use to this day. 2 masterpieces in 1 video ..... you and this song - sublime !

@@jimballard1895 That's OK, it's a common misconception about that album. I feel bad that Barry Goudreau doesn't get credit for his lead guitar on Foreplay/Longtime and Let Me Take You Home Tonight and Franny Sheehan doesn't get credit for his bass playing on the same two songs. And hardly anyone ever mentions that Brad Delp played the acoustic guitar on Let Me Take You Home Tonight as well as doing the vocals. I think a lot of people confuse the album with the demos, where Tom Scholz did play everything but the drums.

Recorded in a tiny basement with homebuilt equipment, this album revolutionized the music industry.
@neechee5150Ай бұрын
@leechap3 What specific home built equipment are you claiming Tom used? Tom used a Scully 12 track tape machine that he purchased. Tom used a console that he purchased. Boylan said it was a Dan Flickinger affair. Tom said it was made by someone else but he admitted that he purchased it. The console and the tape machine are the heart of an analog studio. So what home built equipment are you claiming that Tom used to make this record? Tom purchased the Echo Plex tape loop echo that he modified to be come his so called hyperspace pedal. Tom purchased the bucket brigade circuits that he used to form his doubler along with some tech help from electrical engineers at Polaroid. Tom did not build the large variable resistor that he used as his power soak--her purchased it. The Rockman was not released until 1982 so not one note from this record was processed/routed through a Rockman or a Rockman prototype. So what specific gear are you referring to?

1976's 'More than a Feeling' was written by lead guitarist Tom Scholz who had graduated with a mechanical engineering degree at MIT. The song was ahead of its time as this song was featured in their debut album. It would go on to be the most successful debut album ever selling 14 million copies. This would hold for 20 years til MatchBox 20's debut 'Yourself or Someone Like You' would match Boston's success also selling 14 million copies in 1996.

I loved this band. My girlfriend then asked me to take her to San Francisco one Saturday, and since we usually went once or twice a month anyway I thought nothing of it. After we arrived in the city she told me to go to Howard street off Market street. Then she said to pull into the Best Western hotel parking lot. "What's going on babe?" I asked. She said, "We're gonna party today, so we might as well stay overnight. " "I can't afford this.", I replied. "It's already paid for.", she said. After we checked in, she plopped an envelope on the little table I was sitting at. I opened it and there were two tickets to the Boston concert that night at Winterland. "Happy birthday my love." I know I'm dating myself, but that was the best birthday gift I have ever received. Rest in peace my beloved Marion.

Everyone in Boston lived within about 10 miles of me. All but Tom Scholz I met before they were in Boston. I was friends with Sib Hashian and part of the music community from the North Shore of Boston Mass. I don't know if any of the other members would have remembered me, but they all played in the clubs and I was was introduced to each them at different times when I went out with other local musicians to hear different bands. We had many mutual friends. Despite not having played on most of the first album (although they did all play on "Foreplay" and "Let Me Take You Home Tonight" and Sibby played drums on all but one song, and Brad sang on all the songs), they were all excellent musicians and Brad was the best rock singer I had ever heard in a local bar (then and ever!). Of course we were all thrilled when they hit it big. At the time I managed a local band that was very popular in the area called "Hot to Trot", who was Boston's favorite band (except for Tom Scholz, who didn't tend to hang out with the rest of the band). The would occasionally show up when Hot to Trot was playing at a local club or a concert and sit in with them, which was really a fun treat for the audiences!

With new liberties and a relaxed atmosphere, (opposite of basic) me and my roommate bought a stereo with a turntable together. We borrowed some albums from one of the guys from upstairs. He said we should check out this new album from a band we never heard of before. It was Boston. This song was in that debut album. We were still mailing letters home for correspondence from home and I wrote my buddies to tell them about this new band I just discovered. Every song on Boston's debut album, which this song is from, is fantastic with incredible songwriting, singing, playing and production. Not only is the album a masterpiece, but it's also one of the biggest selling debut albums of all time. The guy who started Boston, Tom Scholtz, has a masters in mechanical engineering from MIT and he recorded and produced the majority of the album in his basement, wrote all the songs (except the last one) and played all the instruments except drums. Brad Delp (RIP) did all the vocals on the album and he was widely considered to be one of the greatest rock vocalists and "the nicest guy in rock". I grew up in the same hometown as Brad Delp, Danvers MA, and my oldest brother graduated high school with him. He was a huge Beatles fan and his yearbook quote was "Have you heard the new Beatles album?" (he also had a side band called Beatlejuice which meticulous covers of Beatles tunes, including using similar instruments). Unfortunately, he suffered from depression for many years and he committed suicide in 2007, with a note pinned to his shirt that said "Mr. Brad Delp. 'J'ai une âme solitaire'. I am a lonely soul."

Was senior engineer for Polaroid in his twenties and didn't quit until his side project, making music took off. Man high school memories, 1976 was a great year! Fun fact Tom Scholz, the lead guitarist, who was an engineer at Polaroid at the time wrote, played each instrument and mastered the demo tape in his basement in Boston. Once the record company got it, they wanted to change a few things and he said "No", I'll take care of it myself. Not much was changed and what he did in the basement is pretty much what's on the record.
@neechee5150Ай бұрын
@vernhoke7730 A few facts. Tom did NOT write all of the songs on this record nor did he do all of the arrangements on the songs on this record. Brad wrote one song and co wrote another and Brad did a great deal of arrangement work on the songs on this record. Tom DID NOT master part of this record. This record was mastered by Wally Traugott at Capital Studios and this is very well documented as fact. In addition, NOT ONE TRACK FROM THE SIX SONG DEMO MADE IT TO THIS RECORD. Tom is on the record in legal documents clearly stating that he re-recorded the songs on the demo and added additional songs to the record. This includes the song Let Me Take You Home which was written by Brad and recorded in its entirely at The Record Plant by the band as pictured on the back of the record. In addition ALL of Brads vocals for the record were recorded at big name LA studios. This is well documented as well. The record sounds significantly different (better) than the demo. Even Tom was forced to admit that the rerecorded tracks are an improvement upon the demo tracks when pushed for details..

Angela, I love your reviews! A little info to let you know just how groundbreaking and important this song and the whole album was, many people credit this song for saving Rock N Roll. Everything coming out had a Disco flavor and if it didn't it just didn't get any airplay! The Boston released this album and it literally changed everything much to my delight. My favorite t-shirt was one that said, "If you can't dance to Rock N Roll you can Disco to hell!" This is one of my favorite songs ever because I can so closely relate to the lyrics. You are spot on regarding music and smells, they both can trigger really intense memories! Merry Christmas to you!

The main guitarist/songwriter is Tom Scholz and he recorded this in the basement of the house he was renting, on 16-track 1" tape. He had a drummer friend play the drum tracks, Tom played everything else and had Brad do all the vocals. Tom shopped the album and it was picked up by MCA records I think who signed them. Problem was, he didn't have a band and they wanted him to go on tour! So he assembled THAT pretty quick. But the amazing part is, they didn't re-record the songs in a big studio, you are listening to the basement recording, and Tom built the guitar effects himself, hence the unique sound. Yes, it absolutely blew our minds, was my favorite album... came out when I was a 14 year old. No digital anything, no auto tune, no loops, all played and sung as is. Listen to the whole album!

@PaulieDC The documentation and pictures of Toms studio around this time are very clear that Tom used a 12 track Scully tape machine that he purchased to record the instrument tracks for this record. Tom DID NOT SHOP THIS RECORD. Tom sent out multiple demos through the years. Tom did not follow the established path for unknown artists to get signed and once he started to follow the pattern/protocol, the demo tape for this record got plenty of attention. This let to BOTH Tom and Brad being signed by Epic/Sony. NONE ONE TRACK FROM THE DEMO MADE IT TO THE RECORD. The demo only had 6 songs on it. Tom re-recorded all of the tracks from the demo songs that made it to this record and added additional songs. The re-recorded tracks are a marked improvement over the tracks on the demo as well. This is especially noticeable when you listen to the vocals as all of Brads vocals were recorded at Capital Studios Studio C on top of the line gear by Boylan with Warren Dewey doing the engineering. What specific guitar effects did Tom make/build for this specific record?

I was 11 years old when it came out in 1977....you are so right about music, because, when I smell jasmine, it reminds me of the jasmine that grew outside my bedroom window in 1977, and in summer, it had such a beautiful perfume, like the memory of this song

I used to listen to this lying on my stomach with my head between my huge home speakers. I didn't have headphones. Such a great tune.

This is a personal story . . . Brad Delp grew up across the street from my grandmother's house in Danvers. In fact, they were friends and even worked at the same company for a time - a small manufacturing outfit called HotWatt, which made among other things heating coils for Mr-Coffee machines. She wound coils and he worked in the stockroom, as I understand it. When Boston hit big with their first album in 1976 Brad gifted her with a copy of the album - vinyl, of course. Brad was a very humble and unassuming sort of guy and it never occurred to him to sign the record sleeve. It was just a simple gesture - one friend to another. My grandmother accepted the gift but the music wasn't really her cup of tea so while she kept it, she wasn't inclined to play it. After a couple of years the record fell victim to one of her cleaning purges and since I was in my mid to late teens at the time, she passed it on to me. It was one of my first hard rock albums and I gave it lots of play, even recording it onto cassette so I could play it on car trips. The whole time I had no idea that my grandmother knew Brad, they were neighbors, he'd been in her house and had given her this exact album!! A few more years went by and CDs pushed vinyl aside as the medium of choice. I kept the album but put it in a box with a bunch of others where it's been through a couple of house moves and if you put bamboo under my fingernails, I couldn't tell you with certainty exactly where that box is! It's in my stuff somewhere, but since Brad never signed the sleeve, somebody finding it after I'm gone will have no clue of it's history! My grandmother, now 100 years old, still lives in the same house and as far as I know, the Delp family still owns the house across the street. I often turn around in their driveway after visiting her and every time I think of that old record and try to remember where I put the box!

In the decade of the 70s I started in junior high, then high school and college, I heard this song on the radio and went on to buy the single (45) and later the album and I can tell you it's one of the greatest albums ever. So glad to see you younger generations loving it like we did, does my heart good. 💓
