I rode all this 2 years ago (DC to Charleston); fun to be going North this time! Rt 17 was a horror! I tried “taking the lane” but after several vehicles tried to kill me I did as you did: walked/rode the soft grass shoulder for a couple of miles. Such a relief to get to quiet roads. Cheers
@steveretiredandcycling3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, you truly understand the Rt 17 horror show. I believe the main problem is that even though there are two lanes going in each direction, those lanes are not as "wide" as on your usual road. When a motorist comes upon a cyclist, there is absolutely no room for them to move over if there's a vehicle in the adjacent lane. I was thankful for the grassy shoulders. Thanks again and have a nice weekend. Steve

Another good two days. Some stressful times there. Always best to err on the side of caution. Glad it all worked out. Take care, Al

Thanks Steve for another scenic video. It looks like they have room to put a bike path on crazy highway 17. I've seen other roads where you have trees and structures in the way, but, from what I can see, crazy highway 17 is practically begging for a bike path of its very own.
@steveretiredandcycling3 жыл бұрын
I agree, the East Coast Greenway association has been working with local government for years trying to get them to add bike paths in areas like crazy route 17. Maybe with the passage of the huge government spending bill, something good and honest will come out of it like bike and pedestrian paths. Would be nice but I've learned to never over estimate the decisions of government. Thanks again and take care, Steve

Steve, you are teaching us new riders how to navigate the traffic and I appreciate that! Great video.

Hi again Doris, as you've experienced, navigating in traffic is never easy. Life would be so much easier if there were bike paths everywhere. Thanks again and have a great weekend! Steve

Okay 👍 You can't beat a little downhill towards the end of the ride...

You were in my neck of the woods on this one. We live in North Carolina. But we are more mid-state. My wife and I spent a week in New Bern a couple of months ago. It's a sweet place. And the birthplace of Pepsi Cola.
@steveretiredandcycling3 жыл бұрын
Hi again, I like New Bern also. Years ago I flew into their airport and traveled to Washington to purchase a boat. Nice area. Didn't know that about Pepsi. Thanks agin, Take care, Steve

Best safety quote ever! "I've got 1300 miles give or take on this trip and lot of things can happen. I'm going to try to do my best to make sure nothing bad happens and only good things happen." You have the best up beat attitude to safety and just appreciating the beauty of nature during a ride. Great video Steve! 👍👍👍

Hi Penelope. Thanks again. Cycling safely is always important to me. I'm always trying to have a good attitude in life. It's so easy to be negative when it comes to crazy drivers. However, with a negative attitude we would never leave the house. Keep on kraken a good attitude Penelope! Thanks again and have a great weekend, Steve

I use the same mirror. I used to ride without one, but now I won't ride unless I use one. Much safer.
@steveretiredandcycling3 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I rely on the mirror that sometimes when I'm off the bike I keep looking to the side expecting to see whats behind me. Is that a sign of too many hours in the saddle? Maybe not a bad problem.

Great ride!! Always good to 1) be safe and 2) adjust plans when necessary and treat yourself to a hotel vs. another 10 miles to the camp ground. Thanks for sharing your journey, I am enjoying it. Do you know your average MPH/day ??
@steveretiredandcycling3 жыл бұрын
Hi again Barbara, I try to be cautious as possible. My average MPH was about 9-10 knowing I had multiple days and pacing myself with excess weight. Yesterday I rode one of my favorite local 15 mile rides with a 14.5 MPH average. Different speeds for different conditions. Thanks again and have a great weekend, Steve

I've got one of those mirrors but I think people should support their local bike shop and buy it there. I never buy anything online if I can help it. I have my local bike shop order it because If they go out of business then I'd have to drive a minimum of 2 hours to get work done on the bike that I can't do.

I agree with shopping our local bike shops. A great reminder! Thanks again, Steve

I'm not one of those ENTITLED riders that feels the need to take a whole lane of traffic if I don't need to. I've always found if you're courteous to motorists they are more likely to be courteous back. If you absolutely have to take a whole lane I can understand that but otherwise, I would have been right there in the grass with you. Take care Steve
@steveretiredandcycling3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tony, I totally agree. I believe the main problem with the Rt 17 horror show is that even though there are two lanes going in each direction, those lanes are not as wide as on your usual road, coupled with speeds of +55 MPH. When a motorist comes upon a cyclist, there is absolutely no room for them to move over if there's a vehicle in the adjacent lane. I was thankful for the grassy shoulders. Thanks again and have a great weekend. Steve

Hi Tom, I took the inland route also. Not the most bike friendly until the VA and DC area. Hope all is well with you. Take care, Steve
