#24 EXACTLY!! In psychology this is called "premature satisfaction." Talking about your plans releases dopamine, giving you a small reward before doing anything. As a result, your motivation to act can decrease because your brain already feels accomplished. This is why I never liked the idea of new years resolutions. To add onto this, there's also the chance that someone reacts negatively to your intention, maybe they say that's stupid why would you learn X language when Y language is more useful?? ...etc. this will kill your motivation.

I get this and like the example of creatives emerging from a period of silence. What about accountabilty? Telling other people makes them ask you, how it is going with x language.
@daysandwords
@daysandwords 3 ай бұрын
The people saying "accountability" are talking about an entirely different thing. I am NOT saying that you should never tell anyone about something you're TRYING to start. But you all know full well that there is a difference between saying "Hey, I need you to check if I've done any Polish in 3 weeks" and saying "I'M GONNA LEARN POLISH I SERIOUSLY AM NO SERIOUSLY..."

First time in a while I didn't skip a sponsor segement 😂😂 On a side note, after watching your other video I decided to properly attempt watching Spiderverse 50 times (it's also a movie I love) - almost at 30 times right now! Repeat exposure is absolutely a game changer. After about 15 watches I was starting to feel a bit worn out, but the lack of novelty was soon replaced with the satisfaction of being able to quote the movie line by line. Definitely has given me lots of little phrases that just roll off my tongue without having to think about it at all. I think I'm gonna do this with more movies, particularly the ones I enjoy watching regardless! Keep up the great content 😁😁

There's a video by One Word at a Time about how Harry Potter is not full of useless vocabulary, because if you take all the words related to the Potterverse, magic in general (even counting broom, midnight and owl as magic-related words) and school, is still less than 3%. So unless you're already advanced, any kind of content helps with any other kind of content.

Studying multiple languages keeps me motivated. I do focus on one language for 3 months, so I get to do all 4 of my languages each year. On Wednesdays and Sundays I do 15 minutes of Duolingo in each of the languages, just so they don't get too stale. But my focus learning and comprehensible input stays 100% with the quarterly target language. Yeah I'm fluent in nothing after 4 years, but I've had nice little interactions in French, Japanese, & Norwegian while traveling... some being helpful in sticky situations. It would be great to be fluent, but I'm in no rush. The variety really lights up my ADHD brain!
@LanguageMaus
@LanguageMaus 4 ай бұрын
It's awesome to travel and overhear languages you can understand, even if it's just a word:) Question: you do ONLY the focus language for the 3 months, except duolingo? I think that may be the issue. In my experience to have significant improvement up until fuency, the languages need to become a spontaneous part of your life. I can't imagine not consuming any content in my languages for 3 months (I have my fav youtubers, podcasts, books etc.)... but having a focus on one sounds helpful

@@LanguageMaus Yes, so when I watch TV/ movies etc., I'm sticking with one theme (language). I started off doing every language every day on Duolingo, but when it came to outside resources, I felt confused as to what to do. Too chaotic. When I assigned each quarter to a language, it really helped to feel calmer and not worry about what I was missing out on. From a neuroplasticity perspective, too, I feel that listening to one language helps train the brain better.

Will probably do Japanese after that since I'm on the Terrace House season that's set in the winter. But sometimes I change plans due to travel plans, too.

To be clear, this isn't what I was talking about in the video. You've been learning 4 languages over 4 years. That's not the same thing as I was saying. But also, "ADHD" is not a model and variant of car. Like, "Oh, this technique works well with ADHD..." I know, because I am also diagnosed with ADHD and so are both my kids (ok the youngest one isn't yet but he will be haha). I'm starting to believe that the term ADHD is about as useful as "male" and "female" when it comes to working out how people will behave.

The only question I have is regarding rereading: So long as you get a good grasp of the text isn’t it better to move on and get a wider base? How “perfect” are you wanting to get with one piece before moving on?
@daysandwords
@daysandwords 3 ай бұрын
Well, you will know the answer to that. I'm not saying that you need to achieve perfection. But I'll tell you that 25 times of something long, e.g. a chapter of a book, is still well within reason.

@@daysandwordswhat are you looking for when you are rereading? Is the idea to try to get to the point that every single word in their contexts is crispy and clear in your mind, or is the idea that repeated exposure is useful for its own sake subconsciously? Thanks for the info. I usually will reread a paragraph at a time if I haven’t understood it down to a phrases & logic level, but it hadn’t occurred to me to take it that far. Just trying to understand if it’s about extracting a higher level of comprehension, or about increasing exposure to something which you can already understand.
@daysandwords
@daysandwords 3 ай бұрын
It's a bit of both. At first it's about increasing comprehension, because the language can't be reproduced accurately until it's understood. But after more times, it's about getting a subconscious feel for it, the same way as you don't consciously decide to put your foot on the correct pedals when driving a car.

Swedish was the first foriegn language i tried to learn, i did everything wrong and hated studying it so i rarely did. After 2 years of "studying" this language, i am not nearly as far as i should be. I honestly think I am still A2 😒. And i'm so embarrassed by this. I wanted to see how much of a language I could learn if i did it the "right way". Studying everyday, both actively and passively. This idea came to mind when I was bored one saturday night and scrolling through Mango Languages, I saw Polish and thought: I should study swedish... then proceeded to click on Polish. Now that i know the right way i'm actually having fun with Polish. I found tv shows to watch in Polish that are interesting and the Mango course isnt that bad. I think I needed a break from Swedish to prove to myself that hey, U CAN learn another language. We'll see if I continue with Polish after these 60 days, it's for fun right now. 🤷🏼‍♀️

And I DO really want to learn it. Just knowing the amount I do now is so fun to use and my husband seeing my improvement and it making him happy and excited is even more motivation. However I’ve always wanted to speak and know Arabic and was toying with the idea of learning that as well but as it is so drastically different from both Spanish and English, your video makes me think it’s a sign that I should not lol. This could have been a crutch or excuse Satisfaction is listening to content meant for adults and understanding it. @daysandwords Just an update, I finished Harry Potter 1-3 in Japanese English Japanese (JaEnJa Sandwich). Half way through book 3, I started reading 10 pages of a Japanese Grammar dictionary at night. I can understand way more, and even though I am just reading the grammar dictionary like it is a novel (not trying to memorize anything), I am definitely recognizing them in the JAENJA sandwich, so even though I would consider my Japanese pretty low, as long as it is supplemented with something, I feel like it is helping. I definitely can't understand Japanese without the sandwich. When I finished Book 3, I jumped back to Harry Potter in Spanish, not the sandwich, just the regular audiobook. I am half way through it, and I have been able to follow the story the whole time, even though I don't get every single word, so the sandwich took me from not being able to follow the story to being able to understand pretty darn well. I don't know how well I would understand a random Spanish book, however. These are my scientific findings on the language sandwich method.

Or hearing about a potential new earbud that translates languages in your ear as your hear them... so what's the point? But yeah I very quickly realised that thinking like that takes everything out of learning a language for me; the fun of learning, the new experiences, the new culture, the new world view etc.

@daysandwords
@daysandwords 2 ай бұрын
I've actually been experimenting with this recently. I think it depends a lot on the level you have. I was trying it in Romanian and none of the sentences made much more sense than they did even after about 5 listens of the same chapter of an audiobook, in Romanian/Swedish/Romanian. (Swedish acting as my native language in this setting, which it's not of course but for this it was fine). I think it's a good approach but you'd need like B1 for it to do much.
@charityneverfaileth22
@charityneverfaileth22 2 ай бұрын
I am probably about B1ish in Spanish. I just finished doing Harry Potter 1 and 2 like that I feel like each line would go from about 20-30% comprehensible to 80-100% after hearing the English. It was as if spaces had been inserted between the Spanish words, and I suddenly realized I did know most of those words, I just didn't catch them the first time. I think if I started over just pure Spanish, I would still struggle, but be a lot better off. I haven't tried yet, because, of course, instead of continuing a good thing, my curiosity got the better of me. Now I am doing it in Japanese English Japanese to see how it would go at a much lower level. For the first 3 hours or so, my heart was sinking the whole time, but then suddenly, around that time, I started hearing words that I had previously learned. Most lines, I only understand 1 word, but it's rewarding to hear anything. I am about half way through book 1, and I've only picked up 2 completely new words, but I feel like the review is amazing! I am not sure yet if I will suddenly get to the point where all of my scant vocabulary will have been reviewed and I will no longer feel progress, but so far, it's been surprisingly gratifying. So you were doing the same thing, but sticking with one chapter over and over, rather than moving on? Do you have previous Romanian? Do you feel like you are understanding the Spanish cognates?
@daysandwords
@daysandwords 2 ай бұрын
Basically I think, like everything else, it would have a peak period and that I probably tried it too early with Romanian. The plan was to keep doing it all the way through the first chapters of the book... and I chose that book because I was able to reasonably easily get it in one target language, and one that I already spoke, hence my using Swedish and not English... I don't have the audiobook in English. If I keep doing it and keep learning words, I think it will work well, but I'm not at B1 yet... and the cognates to Spanish... hmm, nah I mean... I think speaking a bit Spanish and French help but... yeah. Basically I think it's a really good idea but so far I haven't done it that much. Once you're at B2, I think it would be more efficient to just listen to the TL.

In Thai, I can listen in Thai and read along in English, which is obviously a lot faster than the sandwich method. I did the Spanish Sandwiches for my kids to listen while they play with Legos, and realized it was helping me too. Then I started experimenting with Japanese. If I could just pick one language and stick with it... But alas, I haven't done so.

One of them possibly knows something about language learning but didn't actually watch my video and literally didn't believe that I'd even done it... like (HAVE YOU MET ME!?) haha, and the other one has the most loser energy I've ever come across... like I'm morbidly curious about how someone goes through their life with the attitude that everything is the worst thing ever.

It would really interesting to hear your advice what nonnative English speakers can improve. The situation we are in is: we listen to English constantly (tv, music, KZbin etc), but most of us rarely speak English. We can “decode” English without effort, but producing sentences with the right word choices can be a struggle. And also the accent, I am from Sweden, so what English accent should I use? 😅 it becomes a mix of British and American English.

Thanks for saying so. It's a Pansonic S 50mm f1.8, but all the others in that series are of the same quality (18, 24, 35, 50, 85 and 100). But before you go spending $1000 on lenses, look into a decent light and softbox... that makes a much bigger difference.

I see terms of C1/fluent/native used interchangeably often. I know "native" level is the gold standard, but do all these mean the same thing?
@daysandwords
@daysandwords 3 ай бұрын
"Native" should not be used interchangeably with the other two. No, they don't mean the same thing. It's possible to pass a C1 exam as a non-fluent speaker but that's essentially because you fudge your way through, not because you are actually at C1. True C1 level is fluent. Native or "native-like" is a whole different level.

Another tip is to get EXTREME into just immersion. Don't even know how to say "hello" in the target language? Pick a complicated show in that language and just listen to it on repeat for decades. _Don't_ try to pick out the words or sentences and make flashcards of them, nor should you learn the grammar in the sentences being said and how the same word might change in certain situations. There are only two golden rules: studying's for nerds, and a diversity of study methods depending on your level and what exactly you're trying to learn is for sweats!

Great video!!! I love the 'has learned a second language as an adult' thing. Way too many people who learnt as a child and then who attribute their high school grammar lessons that they obviously blitzed because they were already fluent to their fluency. I think it's because they got so much praise and confidence for acing all the tests. Fallacious thinking anyways.

I'm not sure if that's meant to be inversed or not, though. From a language perspective, there'd be nothing wrong with only booking lessons with people of the opposite sex. In my experience, 99% of good iTalki tutors are women. Young and attractive? No, not necessarily.
