At long last I review my own personal DayState Redwolf after 8 months of ownership and tinkering. So is it worth £2000 and just how accurate and good is it. Keep watching and I will tell you whether all the fuss about this rifle is founded or not.

Hi Steve. Hope you had a good Christmas 🎄 I have space in my gun cabinet that needs filling. Looking at the RedWolf and Wolverine R. Your review is very good, pointing out the less perfect aspects as well a the many many plus points. I had. Daystate Mk4 s and really loved the electronics on the gun, so the RedWolf does appeal. The cost is a consideration it’s a lot of money, the Wolverine is less money but mechanical, I have three other air rifles all ‘mechanical’ so I want something different. You and I both know you get what you pay for and quality costs. Thanks for the review you have helped me make my mind up. 👍 Happy New Year to you.

bought the Red Wolf Standard Walnut in .22 (Canada 45fpe version) I absolutely love it, yes really, really expensive but wow. First day out shot 30 or so rounds into a group less than 1" at 90 meters, Eats pellets though as it is so much fun and since it is almost impoossible to buy JSB pellets here in Canada right now, it may be shelved for a bit. All that being said I have a Weihrauch HW100 in .177 FAC and that rifle is almost as accurate and as much fun, it is so smooth for a mechanical actuated rifle. Only slightly more effort to cock than the Redwolf and just as accurate.

The air tank is in the open. Any problems with that? . Seems like if you put the gun down on something it will rest on the tank. Also the barrel has only 1 contact point.
@airgunology
@airgunology 4 жыл бұрын
The air tank is a carbon bottle and no issues with it. Although you could not be resting it on anything other than your hand so as not to put undue pressure on the fitment. This is called a floating barrel and pretty much all top end rifles have them. It helps with resonance and accuracy

I wonder if the software could be ‘hacked’ so that you could stop it auto standby and turn off when you want it? Or would daystate do it for you if you asked.... I don’t like the thought of it turning itself off, that would be playing on my mind all the time. I want to decide when to turn it off

No idea, you would need the DS programmer (RFD's have them) and no way would they do that as it would break all agreements etc. Also the programmer only lets you set the mappings, not the actual software

I've owned my Red Wolf now for over a year and I agree with everything you've said. The accuracy constantly amazes me too, right out to 60yds and beyond and the build quality is second to none. I've got used to the auto shut off now and it doesn't bother me at all, it's better than charging the battery more frequently I suppose. You're a little off with the numbers on the shots between charges as Daystate reckon it's closer to 14,000. My own experience has had more than that at 15,000 before the low battery warning displayed. In fact, in the year I've owned mine I've charged it twice. My only criticism is the 10 shot warning which has got a little mixed up two or three times and I generally leave it disabled. I'm using the 0DB moderator on mine that a managed to pick up from the Birmingham show and find it a perfect match. Whilst they don't always come out the best in the reviews, they are often pitched against others using another brand of rifle. When tested on a Daystate, they are clear winners. My second favorite is the Wolverine R, I own one of those too. Not quite as slick but also amazingly accurate. As for the Daystate knockers, all I can put it down to is envy! BTW, mine's a Walnut Hilite; the laminates are a little too bling for me. Still think it looks a stunner tho. Great review Steve, thanks for posting.

Its a great rifle ... thats for sure Bad point .. you have too take the battery out too charge it ( ok ok , itll do one million shots before it needs recharging ) thats crap .. all I do after each session with my MK4 is , hang it on the wall mount , plug it in ... leave it till the next time I use it .. SIMPLE .. Accuracy ?.. ( on bi-pod AND a bean bag at rear ) .. id put my 1973 BSA Mercury up against it using those " aids " '.. seriously though , most modern day high end rifles can match those results .. I bought one and ended up getting my money back. Found it throwing pellets with the magazine, it also has a surprising amount of 'recoil' for a PCP let alone one that supposed to be efficient with it's air. BUT that wasn't why I took it back to the shop, the action didn't fit into the stock snuggly, there was noticeable movement of the action. Now of course I could have put something between the stock and the action to stop it but...... for the price I paid I shouldn't have to do that. I could have waited for another one to come in and hope it's not the same but, to be honest, I felt let down and it put me off them. Of course I'm not saying that's the same for all these redwolfs, I will have just got a dodgy one, but it still put me off them (with regards to owning one myself)

The most egregious problem with the Redwolf platform is the marketing strategy. (Incidentally, this little rant applies MUCH more for those prospective purchasers in the US market as the limits of the platform in the UK's sub 12 foot pound market preclude much of the rifles abilities.) There's simply no way around what DS has done here, which is perpetrate a fraud. This is a typical "Bait and Switch" marketing tactic. The RW is marketed as a "completely programmable system and the inference is that, you buy the rifle at a ridiculous premium and you'll be able to program everything. Is this true, well, sure if you spend another 400 US. Otherwise the ability to program the rifle is VERY limited and super complicated. IMO this is much like those ads that say, " Buy our pink elephant for X amount and we'll give you a second one absolutely free. Just pay a separate fee. " WTF?.... If I buy a super expensive sports car that comes with a racing suspension, steering and brakes I don't expect to have to pay more for a special key to access those features, it's ridiculous. Show some integrity DS, man up and make the price 3k. Get rid of that crappy old technology (just a ribbon cable that leads to an LCD in a cheap aluminium box. That's literally it, nothing else in there.) and make the thing fully programmable through a phone/computer app. Don't get me wrong, I love my DS guns. I started with a Huntsman, graduated to a Huntsman XL HR (which I still own and shoot) and recently purchased a Wolverine R HP (Why? Because I wasn't going to tote around and play with that stupid box, and YES, had they done it right from the get go, I would have ponied up and bought the RW). But DS really dropped the ball when they adopted this marketing strategy and I can't help but think that they would have TWICE the waiting list had they chosen to do it right the first time round.

Eh, conspiracy theory anyone. Never once have I seen that this rifle was programmable by the customer. Not one shred of evidence for this. Please show me such marketing.

Enter the next generation and new airgun benchmark the Daystate Red Wolf. The Red Wolf and Red Wolf HP is the Formula one of air rifles with computer and state of the art MCT firing systems. Each Red Wolf has three individual programmed energy and velocity settings that can be selected by the shooter in seconds. The shooter can further tune the rifle with an optional Daystate programmer with in the rifles limits allowing each power level program to be manipulated to achieve the very best speed for a given pellet out of each individual rifle. Daystate has thoughtfully included the default program if the user wants to return to the factory settings. " Now you've seen it at least once... LoL

@@JoePatABC Not seen that. Thank you Then you need the programmer and have to buy it from DS at about $300 or more I think if you want this option. The joys of modern tech, just like your car.

Not wanting to get into an argument here so I won't be responding further, but can't really see a problem here, Daystate makes no such statement because in the UK and many other placed the programmer is not offered due to legal power limits. And your quote from the USA importer clearly says that the programmer is extra, no misrepresentation at all
