Daytime fishing trying for a local winter flounder on the river medina uk sea fishing isle of wight

hey everyone,
So on this little session we went out to try and find a local flounder. Not that I have the experience, but speaking with other anglers, we knew it was going to be difficult and indeed it proved to be a tough session. No flounder showed, but it was great to be able to do some filming in the daytime. I'm still searching for my first flounder, or any flat fish for that matter, so if anyone has any tips or advice, it would be gratefully received.

I've never had one from the Medina either. They tell me they used to regularly get them up passed the Bargeman's where the dual carriageway bridge is now.

I've heard some great stories of how prolific it used to be, and then heard stories of how people netted it all for pot bait. Who knows, but it is a real shame its changed so much. I'll have to try the beaches somewhere. Still never had a flatfish 👍👍🎣🎣

Thanks buddy, I didn't have much hope to be honest, but there is always a chance. Its lovely sitting down there in daytime, I've only fished the river twice, pretty much as close as I'll get to estuary fishing. I'll keep trying, thinking Bembridge could possibly throw one up👍👍🙏

Unlucky Dylan, hopefully you'll get one next time, it looks like a great mark. When I was a kid, Dad and I used to catch loads but numbers have declined somewhat, I'm hoping they will bounce back at some point but who knows. Great watch as always bud, take it easy! 👍👍🙏

Every body says the same bud, the flounder fishing has taken a massive hit, and I guess because it has no commercial value, they won't do anything about it. I'll keep trying though. Take care bud👍👍🎣🎣🙏🙏

Based in Ireland but that mark looks very similar to some of my favorites, during my time as an international match angler I was especially known for my flatty game :) Looking at that mark I'd say give it a bash a couple of hours before and after low water as opposed to a full flood. You'll be fishing into that channell more of the session and the fish are more condensed. They'll still be feeding as long as there's flow. Anytime after xmas is usually rubbish for estuary flounders though tbh, best times of Sept-December. I'd personally ditch the beads and use longer snoods (2-3ft) and smaller hooks. It also looks like a better mark for using crab over worms. Pick a lead that allows you to sweep a slow gentle arc using the flow of the water during the cast. Flounder love movement.

I've been watching a few people in Wales catch them. Seems there is loads about in other places. Shame to see the decline in the river. But they are there, just not in numbers. I'll get one, one day👍👍🎣🎣

I've not seen a Flounder for ages, the last one I personally caught must of been about 2016 in Bembridge Harbour. I've not seen one since then.

What a pity the old paddle steamer has deteriorated so much. I was last there about 7-8 years ago and its a lot worse now :-(

It’s such a shame that the river doesn’t fish like it used to. I was never much of a flounder fisher, but it was always very relaxing and at least you could almost guarantee catching. How times change 😢🐟🎣

Yeah mate, I have heard some great stories of how it used to fish, could pretty much always get a flattie down there. I think I've got a better chance of getting one on an open beach somewhere👍👍🎣🎣

Hi Dylan,this time of year,flounder is about the only thing to chase in daytime,might be more successful to try nearer the mouth of the river,say the lions or the breakwater at east cowes,fished that bit you fished here last year with Lyndon and Jon and we got properly cut off on a spring.we had our own little island,blanked too.....

Hey Martin mate. Its nice to get out in the day. I wish I could do it more often. Somebody else mentioned trying East cowes. I've seen a few come in the evening. Be nice to get a plaice too, but I'm guessing they are mainly daytime too. 🎣🎣
