The night scenes give me flashbacks of the time I noticed my final "low fuel" indicator went off as I was trying desperately to escape from an impossible maze of one-way street neighborhoods and find my way back to the safety of I-75/I-85N. I can honestly say that my feelings were *not* generated from any self-held bias or prejudice -- My fear and apprehension kicked in about the time that I was clearly (and loudly) barked orders from 4 "whup-my-ass-sized" dudes as I drove by them -- "Get yo WHITE ass OUTTA HERE!"

I remember those neighborhoods in the mid-60s ... block upon block of well-kept homes, owned by honest working class folks of all races. They didn't have a whole lot, but took pride in what they did have and were willing to share with neighbors. There 'weren't "strip malls" or even mega-malls back then. It seemed that each neighborhood had their local shops and stores, lining streets like Canfield, Mack, Jefferson, Harper, etc. There would be the pharmacy on a corner, next to the bookstore, which was next to the barbershop - which was across the street from the dentist that was next to the law office. on the end of the block was the neighborhood bar, where everybody knew your name. There would be a butcher shop .. with sawdust on the floor and a barrel of huge dill pickles in the back. Many of these stores had living quarters upstairs, where the owners often lived. A few blocks away would be the neighborhood grocery store ... small by today's standards, but its where you shopped for the stuff you couldn't get from the butcher or baker.....or even the vegetable truck that toured the neighborhood streets, selling fresh from the farm fruits n veggies. The ice cream truck - Good Humor - came around each evening in the summer, with the bells jingling. The driver carried his "change machine" on his belt - not a 9mm.

Randy. Keep the faith. Things are changing for the better. I grew up in Cork Town. The difference is my wife, who is a teacher, refused to leave. I grew up parking cars at the Firestone store on Michigan Avenue across from Tiger Stadium. My son still lives in the family house. We now live downtown. Things are getting better. Downtown is booming. Ford just bought Michigan Central Station. I have seen several "comebacks" mis fire. This one feels real. It will take a while before it hits the neighborhoods in a meaningful way but I am actually starting to believe it will happen. My wife never gave up. She sits on every citizen committee imaginable. It will never be what it was in the fifties and sixties but young people are moving in in droves. I never thought I would live to see it.
@1Ocqueoc

There were a lot of neighborhoods where the lots were just 50 (or so) X 100 ... now all vacant land. Always wondered why developers didn't gobble up some of that real estate and combine several smaller lots into larger ones and put some truly decent houses on them. For The D to really make a true comeback, the courts are going to have to stop having revolving doors and get TOUGH on crime - even if they have to resort to Tent Jails.

Six Mile - kind of a small world ... My Dad worked at Tiger Stadium for about 14 years as Head Groundskeeper/Stadium Superintendent ... I sorta grew up in the place. I spent many days shagging fly balls in the outfield during batting practice for the names that Detroiters loved - Kaline, Northrup, Cash, Brown, Horton, Freehan, Stanley, McAuliffe, Oyler, etc etc etc. I often wonder what happened to the great photos and memorabilia that adorned the walls of the Stadium Bar across the street?

I live in Detroit and you picked a specific part at the right time. The city is beautiful with beautiful people. Some of the hardest working and never give up people around. People can bash it all they want but if I went to any poverty stricken area in the country at night you'll see this. What did you see other than people outside hanging? Smh I hope you show other parts of the city as well. Its in a revival stage and is being rebuilt as we speak. Love Detroit!! Always

DETROIT IS NOT THAT BAD. This man had to film this on Friday or Saturday. Hell yeah, it looks like trash city but,That because, no one wants to do anything for the city. White people solution is to move all the black people out of the metro area and bringing jobs that is only qualified for middle class white people or above. They damn near not even funding the public schools. So how can you expect this city to look like utopia. I personally love Detroit. We just need to re-build the houses and have a melting pot city.

Why the fuck is there so many people just loitering around in an abandoned neighbourhood? If these "thugs" had a brain they would buy these properties for dirt cheap, fix them up, work together as a community and repair the houses and live a normal life. Thousands of "thugs" and teens wandering abandoned streets seems like a pathetic life.

Through it all I've managed 8 certification criminal justice field,medical ,social work and many more also my high school diploma (not boasting nor bragging just sharing). I can look back and tell God thank you for allowing me to go through in a place like this. I will not forget where I come from no matter how far life take me. I thank God for the BOLDNESS he has put inside of me the courage to move to another state.. Out of every dark experience became a testimony. Out of my storms the Lord has Blessed me to write my first book out of 5 which is called SERENITY'S STRUGGLES ( based on a true story) my life experience in Detroit You guys should be a blessing .. you can find it on Amazon or BARNES and Nobles... I didn't ask to be born in Detroit city like that but God knew what I would have to go through before I was formed in my Mother's womb.. Instead of judging pray pray for people to find the strength to get out a place like this.. I MUST be honest I thank God that somebody prayed for me...

Good for you!...but sadly imho I truly believe that the majority have no issues with living this way since nobody seems to be doing anything productive as you can see in the video! The ones that don't like it find a way out!

Matt Wilco no not really. I disagree and agree. Wayne county is expensive on cars, however, if you go up north then I’ll agree with you.

steven coffman you are a very racist person. Not all people have to sell drug and steal to make a living. Do we talk about how white people are "known to do cocaine and other hardcore drugs" NO. Most people I Detroit work hard to make a living because life is not served on a silver spoon. You need to really humble yourself and if not hopefully somebody knocks you off your high horse.

I think a white boy would be alright if he's just driving though. I wouldn't stick around too long, though and I definitely wouldn't be filming. I think anyone regardless of their ethnicity would get problems if they tried to film random people in Detroit.
