I miss Fred...used to watch him every week no matter what.

Thanks Zack for sharing this. I stumbled across this video. I grew up in Michigan. Michigan Outdoors was something that my later father and late grandfather and I looked forward to each week. I miss those guys and Fred. I have a trophy steelhead that my father caught on the Au Sable river near Oscoda and a letter signed by Fred to my dad regarding this trophy steelhead. He loved Fred and was so very proud of the fish and the recognition in the letter from Fred. Thanks again for posting this.

Hey Zach, just wanted to say thanks again for posting these. I watch everyone. Im not from Michigan and wasn't aware of your Dad until well after he passed. With that said, these episodes are timeless and a pleasure to watch. A true outdoor time capsule. Can't help but notice that your Dad's ethics and ideas are being regurgitated in the hunting media over and over these days, clearly he was a tremendous influence for outdoorsmen. I appreciate your posts.

You are quite welcome. Thanks for dropping me a line, My father would be very proud knowing that he continues to teach and educate people about the Outdoors and That it's a Great PLace To Be!

My great grandfather was a police officer.... His friend gave him 75lbs of smelt in the 70’s, he said if he didn’t take them he was gonna throw them in the woods.... My grandfather my furious.... He took them and my grandma and aunt cleaned them for 6 hours them froze them, my father talked about eating fried smelt every Sunday for months.... I am so happy you talked about not taking to many smelt, people get to greedy...

Back in the day it was easy to get carried away, but as you pointed out, the day is far from over after dipping.

One new tool in my arsenal for this year is my Mavic mini drone! I can easily hunt streams from camp to know where to go for stream pickins - other than that, seine dipping at night on the shore - Now that's a great time, too!

That is awesome! Would love to hear how it worked.

There's a lot of creeks it could be, it's all about being there at the right time. Smelt fried is the best eating in the world.

Been going at night during the run in ‘20 here. I’ve been getting like 1-2 fish a scoop the past two nights, crazy at how things were
@Michigan-Outdoors4 жыл бұрын
That makes for a very long slow night. Hopefully one day they will return in numbers.

We used to smelt in the spring and there were thousands of them
@Michigan-Outdoors2 жыл бұрын
Yes they were back in the day, partially due to the fact they are actually an invasive species introduced to Michigan in I think the 1920's in Green Lake.

I miss 90s internet pages. So much less flash and filler. Honestly, kind of reminds me of wikipedia these days.

Can't say that I have eaten them smoked, however I have consumed my share of fried.

That was 1998. How easy are you finding them now in 2020
@Michigan-Outdoors4 жыл бұрын
Hit or miss but not what it was.

I'm from the u.p. and it's nothing like it used to be....the same could be said about alot of other fish as well. The run in 2020 only lasted a weekend in some places and there was hardly any fish.

That's the way it was, my friend! We used sein nets in Pointe Pele, Canada and had to dump half the fish to bring the net to shore. Filled up wash tubs and galvanized cans in the pickup bed. Had to give them away. Too much to clean.
