This is good news! I'm trading with 3,000$ cash account on Schwab's Think or Swim and I was only able to use 1,500$ per day. It's nice being able to buy and sell 10 times per day with a small amount compared to having a margin account with 3 day trades a week!
@david_a_uno

Exactly! Because you can't flow smoothly, ie, it's impossible to get in/out and back in instantly. T1 is nice, but it still doesn't help timing entries and exits.

T2 hampered my ability to trade effectively because I’d hold positions way too long not wanting to sacrifice my one or two trades a day on a loss. So I’d hold, hoping it would reverse. It created a scarcity mindset, and no one wins with a scarcity mindset. I agree, instantaneous settlement would be great!

I feel like the pdt rule is a barrier . When you only have 3 in and outs a week it's hard you'll most likely end up with fomo and jump in something for the day that you swear was going to the moon only to be forced to hold it until your next available day trade

Yes. I like how they tell you, limiting your trades on PDT, it's all because they do not want you to lose money, but at the same time, if you make your third trade, they will not allow you to sell it and are forced to hold on to a losing trade while you see your account evaporate. Their reasoning is so stupid.

It's actually very funny how I used to think every investor went broke during recessions, meanwhile some made millions. I also thought everybody went out of business during the Great depression, but some went into business. Bottom line, there's always depression for some and profit for others, it all starts from having the right mindset. That said, I've set asides part of my savings to invest for future. Unfortunately I'm a complete noob.

Good Evening Ross. First thanks for all you do and teach. I have learned a lot from all your videos. I agree that going to a T1 is a game changer for day traders. I have often had to stop trading on a "hot" day because I ran "out" of settled money for the day. But I don't think we will ever see an instant settle of trades under the current technology. Here is why: Due to "Date of Record" for stocks that are paying out a dividend. Even on a T1 settle, only 1 person can own the shares. If it went to instant settle you might have 20 or 30 people own the same shares during the course of the day. They could make "Date of Record" down to a certain minute. But someone would figure out how to game the systems and trade in and out a many times during that minute. So then they would have to do down to the second for "Date of Record". I think then you would be running into technology constraints between computer systems at the different firms. The only way around this might be to offer instant settle only on stocks that don't have a dividend. Anyways, that's my 2 cents worth.

If cash accounts could keep trading their BP all day you would see bigger highs throughout the day. Now, most stocks, once people take profit they're done and it opens the door for easy shorts. That's why you only trade until 10 am all retail cash accounts are done for the day and there's less buying later on

When I first started trading in 2016 it cost $7.95 to buy a stock. And another $7.95 to sell the stock. And the settlement date was T+3. These things were to discourage day trading and encourage real long term investing in the market. But it's very easy now for all long term investing to end. There is no charge for trades, and the settlement date is T+1 now. So the question I have is, "Why in the world would anyone want to buy and hold?" All these rule changes encourage gambling. Not investing. The big money, sooner or later, with these new rules are going to change...they aren't going to buy and hold for the 401k accounts anymore. They will start day trading your 401k account. And the market will be insane.

90% of traders will lose more money & 10% will make more and like you mention Ross that the brokers will earn much more profits now so it's a no brainer for them to favor the change while at the same time at least we have faster access to our trading funds now. As for the leverage, I would be in favor to let the trader decide of having a NO LEVERAGE account option with a T0 SETTLEMENT or having a second option of access to 4x MARGIN T1 SETTLEMENT.

I don't think you are correct. T+2 means if you are buying a stock on Monday, the settlement will happen on Wednesday. But it's not gonna be Wednesday morning; it will be at the closing. So you can only trade with the settled amount on Thursday. Similarly, for T+1, if you are buying a stock on Monday, the settlement will happen on Tuesday closing of market. And you can trade with the settled funds on Wednesday.

All PDT did for me was put me in a bad position where I was asking friends and family to let me borrow $25,000 to let sit in an account while I traded with the money that I put in above that $25,000. Could have gotten myself in a REALLY bad spot if I hadn’t been disciplined about losses. But because I was so scared of losing I was hopping out of trades way too fast and never giving them the chance to work. Let me risk the $1000 I can afford to lose instead of trying to come up with $25,000 that I absolutely can’t afford to lose. Edit: when are we all going to get together and petition that this be changed?

I agree, having to wait a day or 2 also makes you lose more money in my opinion, because if you know you can only trade so many times…… it’s easy to get greedy and hold on to That trade longer than you should because you’re trying to milk the most money you can out of it….. then it turns on you and you lose….. vs if you had instant settlement, you could quickly lock in those profits and then jump back in if you felt it was going higher…. Basically a scalp method.

Half the reason why I've been developing the bad habit of holding onto a stock while I a trade is because I'm limited on the money I have to invest in a trade and I have to wait on funds to settle... I split my cash account in half to trade everyday and I have to go with small size positions so I can practice proper entry and exits and to gain experience faster due to the limitations at hand

It's because the brokers get bigger kickbacks from hedge funds not to so the hedge funds have more time to cover shorts, shorts is very profitable when you can manipulate the system. I bet the stocks getting shorted will be lower. And why also it takes 2 days two settle because of the cost of the cloud service to host all the billions of transactions and monitor and audit the CAIS. But it definitely isn't to protect the new trader.

I don't want to advertise anyone, genius (hint), but one broker's founder went to Washington, D.C. last year to lobby to lower the 25K requirement. He said that there's no appetite for it now, but maybe in several years.

The rationale for requiring $25K to day trade was that if you have less money than that, you probably don't know what you're doing, and you'll might lose it all. So now, beginners are forced to fund their accounts with $25K, and a lot of them lose the whole $25K. Prior to the PDT rule, if a new trader didn't know what they were doing, and blew up a $2000 account, it would be a lot less dangerous. The people who don't know what they're doing might quit -- or figure out a strategy to be profitable.

It's crazy, this should have been done by the 1980's. Imagine the days of Jesse Livermore, he shouts out a buy then shouts out a sell; after that he'd have to go home and not come in the next day. So, it's really not even good enough for the 1920's! Not an issue for me now, but years ago my account was frozen because of a trade not realizing it violated PDT (this year amusingly I had to violate PDT to get day trading buying power (I expected it to arrive once I had the balance lol.)

The Pattern Day Trader (PDT) rule has always only applied to Margin Accounts. If you trade in a cash account, the PDT rule does not apply.

Margin financing is more usefully applied to shorting stock due to the mechanics of the transaction itself.
