I was 18 in 1979 when this song first came out, and yesterday the tune popped in my head. Don't know how or why, as I doubt it's ever been played on the radio in Perth (Western Australia) since then. I love these "novelty tunes." This tune has a nice lilting sound to it, and the female lead singers voice is perfect. The lyrics are funny too!!

@williamsheingorn44312 жыл бұрын
I’m thinking it’s a 6/8 time signature Stress is on 1st and a bit less on 4th beat of the eighth notes Gives feeling of continuous motion,like merry-go-round Also,Wreck of Edmond Fitzgerald is written in this time signature....again,the waves of the Great Lakes giving the feel of continuous motion Also,Billy Joel “Piano Man”…..easy to hear the 6/8 identical time signature as “Bangor”

@ianworthington23242 жыл бұрын

@philtorpey2 жыл бұрын
The release was shrouded in controversy after reports that the song was actually inspired by a trip to Rhyl, another town in North Wales. It was rumoured that Bangor was chosen as the lyric due to it having an extra syllable that flowed better with the song. There were rumours of an outcry among local councillors and businesses in Rhyl about the missed opportunity for tourism which would have been generated. Cook stated that the song was specifically written about Bangor.

In reality the idea of a day trip to Bangor from NW mill towns was not possible, it was way too far in the days when a day trip cost a pound . Even Blackpool was a long haul with a stop on the way usually Squirrel Inn.
