They made this movie at my middle school in Austin. I remember how excited everyone was that a “real movie” was being made in our school. They had repainted the hallways to have the wall of presidents and the school liked it so much they kept it. The movie shop teacher was our actual shop teacher from class. Whenever I watch this I can say “there’s my locker, and there’s my class, and there’s that spot where we broke the window!” Lol

I'm not going to lie. Going to High School in the 70s was great. We had so much freedom. Parents weren't all over where we were, the teachers didn't care what we did, the police didn't make a federal case out of minor infractions. I feel sorry for kids today.

The best part of this movie for us who were actually alive back then is how accurate it is about the times. The clothes, the cars, the music, the hairstyles. It's all so spot on. Plus, I knew people who was exactly like every single character in this movie. The 70's were a blast. We had jamming tunes, kick ass muscle cars, and horrible styles.

@@bauertime Lol! I don't remember any of you guys either. Class of '80 here. It's incredible how accurate this film is! I went to H.S. in a SoCal beach town and my experience was almost identical to the one portrayed in this film. We didn't do the hazing but, other than that, it was spot on. S3x, drugs & rock 'n' roll... and a little bit of school and sports in between. Funny to see some of the younger generation "shocked" by our behavior back then. ; ) In spite of the usual teenage dramas, everything and everyone was so chill. When I'd watch other so-called "teenage" movies, I never understood the animosity between different groups. In my school athletes, A-students, stoners, surfers, gear heads, etc. all hung out together. We also had the full socio-economic and racial spectrum in our student body. Nobody gave a shit about any of that and we all got along just fine. I literally just dropped into a theater one day when I had some time off and knew absolutely nothing about this film other than it was directed by Linklater. I loved "Slackers" so I thought I'd take a chance on it. I was just blown away and told all my friends about it. Still one of my favorite films for the nostalgia alone.

A bunch of young actors got their start or near start in this nostalgic film. Ben Affleck, Milla Jovovich (of Resident Evil fame), Cole Hauser (Yellowstone), Parker Posey and Adam Goldberg (many many movies), and Rory Cochrane (many things, including CSI Miami), and of course Matthew McConaughey (alright alright alright). The list goes on. I grew up in the 70s in a small town, so this movie was pretty iconic for many of us, and of course, the sound track is top notch. In my high school, if you played sports, as a freshman you had to join the P Club, and that mean horrific hazing for a whole week. It was a blast!

Y'all were asking if this is really what it was like growing up in the 70's? If you were in a small-ish town, then yes, this movie really does a good job of portraying high school in the mid/late 70s. Also, pool was a big deal back then. The main hangout was the arcade, and between pool tables and pinball machines (video games were still very new and not very good), the arcade was the place to see and be seen on a weekend evening. Yes, we did have giant beer parties out in the woods. Good times! The song you were asking about at the party was The Balinese by a very young ZZ Top.

I grew up on Long Island in the 70's about a 45 minute train ride from Manhattan. And Long Island towns in the populated areas on the south shore where I lived were and are a string of medium sized to large towns that their shopping, bar, movie, restaurant areas ran right into each other. So much so you often didn't know where one town ended and the next town started. It was and is sort of like one giant town with lots of trees and parks in the residential areas.. But this movie pretty much hit the nail on the head for me as to what it was like. The sports rivalry between the local towns. You nailed it about the pool halls and arcades and the parties in the woods. We also had several lakes in the area that were next to the woods or in them that kicked things up a notch. And being on the South Shore of Long Island, we had lots of beach parties in the warmer weather as well. The opening scene of Jaws nailed what the beach parties were like pretty well. Except it could be more rowdy than the mellowness in that scene. Not always but sometimes. Most of us had fake ID's that we got in the city so we were also in the bars and rock clubs a lot. And discos because thats where the girls wanted to go all the dam time. LOL. Drinking age was 18 then and they wern't too strict about it if you had any sort of ID. I can't count how many times we saw Twisted Sister at "Speaks," a local band, before they made it famous. Also The Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie among many others. But that was more in the city and My group liked classic rock more than their type of music. And then throw in the Son of Sam was running around shooting people in my Jr and Senior year. He never came to Long Island but Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx where he did all of his shootings are less than 30 minutes away by car. We had hazing but it wasn't anything to do with pacifiers. LOL.

I graduated in 73. The freshman hazing was only starting then and it was more screwing around with them on the first day of school, not the last. But otherwise, yeah this is pretty accurate. Alice Cooper's Schools Out was our class song. And yes, we made them play it at graduation, even though principal originally wasn't going to - we told them no class song, no class. Almost the whole class was ready to walk out on the ceremony if they didn't play it. My best friend was basically the Matthew McConaughey character - still coming around chasing the high school girls long after he graduated. One of the girls he was running around with was a girl who had "friend-zoned" me, because I was a nice guy and she like the bad boys. But, after he broke her heart, she came looking for a friendly shoulder to cry on. And I guess she decided bad boys weren't all that great after all. We've got 4 kids, 6 grandkids, and will be celebrating our 48th wedding anniversary this year. It's true, nice guys do finish last. 😁

Everybody Wants Some! is billed as "the spiritual sequel to Dazed and Confused." Both are semi-autobiographical movies of Richard Linklater. He played baseball in high school and college. I think he would be the kid with the long hair who got the swats and then Randall "Pink" Floyd invited him to go out. He would have started high school in the fall of 1976 and started college in the fall of 1980 just like in those two movies.

Well, I was in high school when this came out, but a lot of this still rang true for my school experience. It was normal to just pile into cars and drive around, looking for something to do. I think that all teenagers had a secret partying spot in their hometown; in mine, it was a wooded area between the school and a McDonald's, that was called "The Log." It was dark and swampy, so adults did not bother going back there. I'm actually surprised that we all weren't overrun with Lyme disease, but when you're 17, you're practically immortal. My mom actually has a photo of herself from the day before I was born and it's basically a picture of what NOT to do whilst pregnant; she's holding a beer, a cigarette in her mouth, and bowling with a 16lb ball. It was common for obstetricians to recommend that women should smoke cigarettes so they wouldn't gain too much weight. I kid you not! We all survived!

I think every small town had the one guy who was that Matthew McConaughey character. I do have to say that we had some pretty awesome music, and I may. or may not have made a couple of "vases" in school. LOL Cruising up and down the main drag was real. A huge kegger was always held after school let out for summer. It was typically on somebody's farm, and it was open to all. Everyone knew where you could buy beer without being carded, and if they were being cautious, there was always a bootlegger to pay a premium price to.

Then we would go hang out in the woods and party. We were never approached by a cop and hastled. Good times for sure. If you're wondering where we got our money from, the guy's would do odd jobs like mowing lawns, paper route, etc. The girls would babysit, clean houses, get paid for doing chores etc. Some had rich parents and got an allowance. But he was very nice, and respectful, and one might even say it's cool in that he didn't hit on some barbie doll and act as sleazy as Dom. Plus, I knew a guy named Tommy when I was in high school who was in his 20's and would hang with anyone he found common ground with, even a 16 year old girl who was into guitar and movies. He was also a gear head and even looked a bit like Matty Mac in this movie. My parents even liked him. So I had a frame of reference going in. I actually saw this in the theater when it opened.

Yes, this is where "alright, alright, alright" started. It wasn't part of the script. It was improvised. Actually a lot of McConaughey's lines were improvised. He said he was only suppose to have a small role but the director or someone kept wanting him in the movie. His dad passed away while filming was happening. He left to attend the funeral and went back to finish the movie. He's got a lot of good movies but this is my favorite one that he's a part of.

This movie I never get tired of. First because of how awesome it is. Second, love the soundtrack. The soundtrack was so popular they had to release a volume 2 with the rest of the songs. And 3. I lived in an era when being a freshman in high school meant you had to go through hazing day. You guys grew up in a different generation. Not dissing you. Back then it was a right of passage that’s obviously frowned upon now, but back then you went through it and then you did it to others. And it sounds stupid but it was the thing back then. And let me tell you, after that experience you do become friends with al lot of other older classes.

I just realized you guys have to watch American Graffiti (1973). It's the first movie George Lucas made before Star Wars and it inspired Dazed and Confused. Filmed in 1972 but takes place in 1962 on the last evening of summer vacation before high school graduates leave town to go off to coffee. Great music, great cars, lots of famous people who weren't famous yet. You'll dig it.

My dad grew up during this time said movie was not to far off from reality when he went to high school, just different times. Also pretty funny how Jay saw Pink's decision at end differently than other people. Personal always saw it as Pink is a guy living his life on his terms and seen be a good guy treating everyone nicely, kind of doing everything right. For Pink football wasn't his life nor did he see it as a way to open doors like it can for some. He cared more about being truthful and be honest rather than this being a rebellious phase. His football friends didn't hesitate to sign paper despite all of them breaking rules same day agreed to uphold. For Pink he has his own integrity he has lived his life and if they don't agree with him, he will just keep on moving forward living life his way was the message I got out of it.

This movie is special to me because I was a freshman in high school in 1976, and this movie is the soundtrack to my life. Music from bands like Ted Nugent, Black Oak Arkansas, Foghat and so many others. We would play pool at a local "King Louis Bowling Alley" and then go out and have dinner at a drive-in or pizza place. And drink beer that we bought, though we weren't old enough to buy it legally. Plus, there were parties, lots of parties! And great bands, and concert tickets that were affordable! Every weekend of the summer, there were concerts with local bands for $1.02, thanks to a local radio station.

This film comes VERY close to what it was like...graduated in 1978 from Houston ISD, Texas. A note - we had "Junior High Schools" back then, which covered 7th-9th grades. Gave you a fighting chance when you hit senior high (10-12 grades). And yes the music was fantastic...and we were a bit wild. Thank God there were no cell phones! The song you guys were asking about at around 28:55 of your reaction was "Balinese" by ZZ Top, off of the Fandango album (check it out). We knew ALL of the words to songs by "that little 'ol band from Texas!"

So glad you two did this movie. It really is spot on: In high school, Friday nights, we had a friend who worked at McDonalds who'd give us 2-3 bags of free food at the drive thru, and another friend who worked at a liquor store, who'd leave us a keg of beer in the trash bin behind the store. We'd go cruising on the main drag then head out to the almond orchard for a bonfire party. And yes, someone usually climbed the 110ft power line tower in the middle of the orchard. Fast cars, no seat belts, alcohol, bonfires and tower-climbing. I'm amazed no one died. Good times. (Btw, the main drag we'd cruise in my hometown was McHenry Blvd, made famous by George Lucas in the movie American Graffiti. He grew up there too)

I had a friend who was a working actor, Todd Babcock, so he was huge into movies, and he had a movie festival at his house every summer that focused on this movie, and always also included The Big Lebowski and Fast Times At Ridgemont High. Dozens of TVs all synched together. TVs in every room, the front yard, backyard…even across from the toilet in the bathroom. Projector with a huge screen in the back yard. There was a car parked in the backyard with a trunk full of beer on ice. Hundreds of people. At midnight they’d do Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon synched with The Wizard Of Oz. I think Pink deserves a lot of credit for being the young man he was in this movie. He was doing right by others and himself throughout the entire film. Most importantly to me is he had the courage to stand by his convictions and not sign some piece of paper pledging to not do things he was going to be doing anyway. Pink wasn't a hypocrite like everyone else on the team who were willing to sign a pledge form they had no intention of adhering to.

I'm from a small town with a lot of football spirit. It was VERY much like this. Graduated in the 80's. And yeah, you hit it right on the head, it was all about "Cruising". Just driving around with your friends, seeing what was going on, fining things to get into. There was a guy who's mailbox always got smashed by dumbass kids. He eventually dug a 6 foot hole and buried a metal bar that he attached his mailbox to - the next time someone hit it with a bat, it caused a car wreck and some people were hurt pretty bad. The parents tried to sue, but he wasn't found liable because there wasn't any statute saying you couldn't have a metal mailbox pole. We had a neighbor who had a slug bug. He was 6'7" and gangly as hell. It was so funny to watch him clamber out of that car. Up through the 70's pool was really big. Arcades had pool and pinball. It started slowly losing some ground when video games started becoming the 'In Thing'. My brother was a city bus driver and they had pool tables in the lounge, where the split-shift drivers would just hang out between their runs. He got really good. I mean, I know how to pay, but he's amazing.

I think the style of American Graffiti as a day-in-the-life story was the inspiration, but the movie is clearly inspired by Richard Linklater's own life. He would be the incoming freshman baseball pitcher, and he was the incoming college freshman baseball pitcher in the movie Everybody Wants Some! that came out a few years ago. It's also great, but unfortunately didn't get as much attention as it deserved. If you have a chance you should watch that movie. It's the first weekend of college in 1980.

Loved y’all’s reaction, that was adorable in itself. I was 13 in 76-it was the year of the bicentennial. I lived in a small southern town and it was just like that-you had to make your own fun. The drinking age was still 18, so if you could pass or had a “friendly” beer joint owner, you could buy beer (when I was staying with mother near Saucier, it was sweet old guy named Solly-you could tell him it was your birthday and he’d give you free beer). We would drive across the old rickety bridge to Delta LA from Vicksburg MS to buy drinks, and we’d always get them too. Piss tests weren’t a thing yet. It’s funny that the redheaded girl’s theory about the decades was so wrong-the 70s weren’t politically radical like the 60s, but the 80s were anything but radical lol-Reagan era-unless you count the cocaine cowboy thing which was definitely not conservative! I got a close up look at that too-trips to Palm Beach FL.

2:32 - I got news for you.... yes, they were. I was still in elementary school at the time, but yeah, we knew what the older kids were doing. 7:04 - Well spotted, Jay!! 9:37 - LMAO! Yeah, they could have. Trust me on that. They not only could have, but WOULD have. Hazing wasn't quite as bad when I got to high school, but it did still exist to a point. 14:30 - Did you notice the open beers on school property? Heh.... the stuff we got away with back then.... 25:16 - Mothers (to be) not only smoked, but drank alcohol, as well. Both activities were pretty common everywhere. Despite "drinking openly" was technically illegal. The police worried about it only if it got out of hand. 25:25 - I was even younger when I was being sent to stores to buy cigarettes and alcohol for adults. Granted, I was rarely allowed to have part of a beer, or a little wine, before I turned 10, but sending a kid to a store with a note and some money was very common at the time. So, Mitch being able to pull that purchase off tracks with the times. 26:00 - Heh.... Smoke filled bowling alleys, pool halls, all of those "sin dens" were a big thing back then. And yes, children were allowed in them. Hell, after I turned 13, I lived in a pool hall (1980) until it burned down in 1984. It was owned by my best friend's parents. It was a WHOLE different era. 40:40 - It wasn't far off. I did have all nighters like that in the 80s, but it was pretty wild in the 70s when I was in my pre-teens. The stuff you could get away with back then.... it's a miracle we all survived it.

Easily my favourite day in the life movie. I can put this movie on any time and it instantly makes me feel better with the opening Aerosmith credits. Richard Linklater used a cast of mostly unknown actors he found on the streets of Austin, Texas. The cast and crew were staying together in a hotel and most said it was like a summer camp. It really lends to the chemistry and natural friendships you feel in the film. This is a special film that I hold dearly, thanks for reacting to this one.

I was in grade school in the 1970s, but when I was in middle school in the early 80s, it wasn't too far off from this. The high school kids would absolutely terrorize us every chance they got. Nothing really violent, but they would spray us with drinks, do drive by's with food, throw our bikes in the bushes. That kind of thing. That went triple for Halloween. We just accepted it as normal. Plus, if you handled it okay, some of them might be cool to you. I think this movie is probably the most realistic teen movie that also captures the vibe of the era. Fast Times would be second place.

I graduated high school in '75 and this movie felt more like a documentary to me than a comedy/drama(?). 1975 was the year that seniors in HS smoked more pot (over 60% of us) than any other senior class, ever. And yes, a lot of weed was secretly smoked on campus. There were parties all the time. It was wild. Then again, most of our parents simply raised us like wolves in the '60s, kicking us out of the house to play as kids and for us to not come home until the sun was nearly setting. I'm surprised we survived the '60s, much less the wildness of the '70s as teens. It was great!

I was a middle school 13 year old in the summer of ‘76. This is one of my favorite movies and such an accurate depiction of my teenage years. You were able to get your drivers license at 15 which gave you a lot more freedom and independence. You could actually work on cars back then because they didn’t have computer systems running them. So you would go out and buy an old car and get it running good. We did smoke a lot of pot and drank a lot beer! Our cops were very similar as the one in this movie. If you were caught doing something wrong, not property damage or violence or anything like that, they would either call your parents or your coach. Here they were known to follow you home if you were caught out drinking and driving. It was really and truly a very different world back then.

The reason this film was so popular and loved is that it is so authentic. It takes place the year I was also a high school Junior heading into my senior year (which is true of the director too). The characters, the clothing, music, gestures, language, and attitudes are spot on. This is truly the life of small town teenagers in the mid 70s. The summer after the movie came out my best bud lived in a crappy duplex in east Dallas with the actor who played the soul pole guy in Dazed & Confused. We got all the scoop from the set and got to read his original script (signed by all the cast). He told us that the theft of the statues was supposed to be a major plot point that ended up getting cut, plus the controversy surrounding the actor who played Bickford running off with Milla Jovovich which caused huge problems on the set. Good times good times. He no longer possessed his Soul Pole paddle, as it got destroyed during filming. That summer was very much a dazed and confused summer.

Thanks for this one J&A. This movie really hits home for me. The timeline is perfect. I graduated the year before this takes place and it’s so accurate. You guys are right. It was a spectacular time to be a teen. I didn’t realize it at the time but it was! Especially the music!

It's crazy growing up to this movie being a right of passage for a kid born and raised in Austin and now living literally in the neighborhood where this movie was shot off, burnet rd/ anderson Ln. My girl and I picnic in the park where the baseball scene was shot. I love it. Also, my mother was entering high school in Austin in the exact year this was set in. I always thought it was cool.

I graduated from a HS in Northern Virginia in '76, and everything depicted in this movie was accurate, including the bowling ball scene. Talk about a flashback...

I was 13 years old in 1976, so I cant speak to any of the shenanigans that kids in High School got up to, but... I do know that we had a LOT of freedom. I had to be home when the streetlights came on and was not to be late to dinner. As an upper classman in High School, I didn't have a curfew, but I knew better than to push the limits of my Mama's patience. I am an "only" and my Daddy died when I was 16. I respected and loved her too much to be a problem for her. 😉 I will say that I am tremendously grateful that I grew up when I did. The analog world is a much kinder, gentler place to grow up in and our music was, and still is, DA BOMB!!! 😛

This movie is the best for drinking games. Whenever kid touches the bridge of his nose, whenever someone says “man” whenever someone is smoking a joint, whenever someone takes a drink of their beer 😩 I’ve gotten so blitzed to this movie so many times 😂

I give this movie the Best soundtrack award. They have so many songs in this movie they needed 3 full soundtracks.

This is *EXACTLY* a spot-on representation of HS Life in the 70's. I was at NEHS (Home of the VIKINGS) from 76-80 & it was just like this! 1976 was the BEST SUMMER & Music of my life! 😉👍❤ PS: Incoming Sr's ALWAYS Haze in the incoming Freshmen! It was the right of passage! 😊

@Gerald H I'd have to agree. It usually did run most amongst the popular HS Cliques. Jocks, Cheerleaders, The Interact & Rojan's clubs) Gawd they were so full of themselves. 😊

19:10 Yes, Amber, this IS where “All right, all right, all right” started! McConaughey got it from listening to Jim Morrison’s onstage banter on a live Doors album before a song (Morrison did 4 or 5 “all rights”), and applying it to his motivation and psyching up for his first scene being filmed on the movie, which was this one.

McConaughey actually applied as a production assistant, and he got talked into being in the movie.. and his movie career was born
