Lots of interesting discussions, but I agree with cutting most of them. They would have just slowed the movie down even more. I do wish they'd left the scenes of narc'ing on Mitch and the two kids with attitude outside the rec center in.

I love getting glimpses of the interpersonal relations of all these characters. In this scene at 9:13 Don is obviously cool with all of these guys. O'Bannon seems to dislike the other stoners and Slater seems to dislike the other jocks. Ben and Pickford seem to be friends despite their different social circles. the film shows all of this in less than a minute.

We did have some guy that we thought graduated in 71 that worked as a stocker in the grocery store i worked at. Come to find out he was kicked out 2 months before he was suppose to graduate. He was creepy....had a Dodge van with huge ass speakers and shag carpet always hitting on 16-17 year old girls. In the movie there was no Led Zeppelin...they were huge for us stoners. The price of cigarettes was correct and beer was 168 to 199 a six pack. There was lots of enduro motorcycles ..they did not show that.....in the parking lot there was about 100 plus motorbikes at our school. I had 72 orange Gremlin with a 6 cyl and 3 speed ....plus a 74 Yamaha RD350 and a 73 Suzuki TS185 I would ride to school ...It was like watching my senior year pretty much spot on...

I respectfully disagree, because in most cases, these scenes waste time explaining things that viewers either can figure out for themselves, or more likely still wouldn't get even if the scenes were there. Plus 25 minutes of additional filler would slow the pacing of this excellent movie considerably. Of course if it were at least and option on the DVD to watch with the deleted scenes people could choose for themselves, though most of these don't appear to have completely made it through post-production judging by the quality and lack of soundtrack.

Yeah I don't know. I wouldn't include the scene of Benny O'Donnell making racist remarks about the Asian girls and giving that patriotic monologue. He is already a major asshole in the film, that scene and the one where he bullies those kids with Melvin would leave a bad taste to a (mostly) feel-good comedy. I think he was supposed to be a bigger dick than O'Bannion, who I've always considered to be more of a cartoony character, one of those "love to hate" antagonists. Implications that Benny is being abused by his dad and being a racist cunt just don't fit the tone of the movie. Also, O'Bannion picking on Slater about drugs is funny when you hear it once, if these deleted scenes were in the film, the same line would be there three times, so it would get old pretty quick.

You could tell anyway but these scenes really establish Benny as a damaged hot-head. The only time you see it in the movie is at the party while talking to Randall. The scene where he can't get the beer open should have stayed. It was well acted by all and shows that he's just a 17yo kid that thinks he knows it all. He can't even open a beer at times. It's good that most of this was cut though.
@Handel_Opaz
@Handel_Opaz 5 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree. Based on these deleted scenes, you can see that Benny has more depth to him as a fictional character and some backstory. O'Bannion more of a one-dimensional typical bully-jock, but Benny seems to enjoy beating freshmen because he's been abused himself (the "This is gonna hurt you more than me" line), he's somewhat more intelligent than O'Bannion, but has these sociopathic tendencies. I had never seen that scene before where "OB Badass" shows up at the moontower. I had heard about it but didn't know it was actually filmed. The final cut makes it seem as Benny is done with the paddling at least for a while, but that scene shows that even when they're out partying, he's going on about "getting them later". These scenes are very interesting for us diehard D&C fans, but I'm glad they were left out. The final-cut Benny is much more tolerable this way.

I don’t know. I kind of like how they took those scenes out. The movie already had O’Bannion as the hot head, having Benny would’ve been a tad redundant. I also thought the talk he had with Randall near the end wasn’t really hot-headed. More of a guy who wanted best for himself and his friends.

The one scene that was cut proves my point I knew all along Pink and Dawson were the two coolest guys because they got along with everyone. OBannon tells Dawson to ditch the morons( heavy drug users) and gets question if he is pulling a "pink imitation" by hanging out with them. Pink REALLY gets along with everyone because he even hangs out with the geeks. Kinda like the scene in Ferris Buller were the secretary says that everyone loves Ferris. Wooderson is a decent guy as well since he sticks up for the one geeky guy during the fight. It was just interesting seeing more scenes where oBannon makes fun of Slaters mom and tells him to give him drugs. There was only one of those scenes in the original.

HowardTheDork the studio was pressuring Linklater to keep it to a certain length, as most studios do. He said the original cut was like 2 hrs 45 min, way too long for a feature film. In interviews he’s said that it really bothered him to cut certain scenes, like the one with Parker Posey and Joey Lauren Adams. He had let them write that bit themselves and told them he’d put it in the film, but in the end he had to cut it, and he felt bad for letting them down.

I just got so deep in thought and analyzed tf out of this... At first at 4:24 I was like DAMN, so open about the racism! But immediately after I was like "ahh. I get it. It's the early 70s. The Vietnam war had JUST ended". My parents were teenagers in the 70s. My dad tells me stories of watching the TV to hear the lottery of birthdates of who was getting drafted. My dads date was never called. That war effected EVERYONE back then. Teens were getting sent off to die in the war. Teenage girls and women's boyfriends/husbands were being killed. Parents were losing their sons to the war. Kids were losing dads. Kids and teens today have no idea how scary of a time this was. They were freakin DRAFTED. Basically kidnapped by the govt to go fight in the war. They had no say so. Kids from the 80s and 90s (I'm an 80s baby, 90s kid/preteen) dont even know what it was like to live during a time like that, but our parents did live through it. Our parents were the ones getting drafted and fighting in it.

Jason (Randal pink Floyd) London story- a friend of mine talked me into applying to be an extra in Calgary and I got a call for a made for TV movie starring jason london and Annabella Sciorra. I’m a tradesman so I have no experience acting. I showed up, the casting lady wanted me behind jason London and his co lead, a girl but also to appear in between them in the shot looking “suspicious”. They tried to shoot the scene a few times and I kept missing my “mark,” (they put tape on the ground where everyone stands, you have to orientate yourself between the actors in front so the camera sees you in behind while making it look like you’re not looking at or avoiding the giant camera in front of you to calculate this). The director was getting pissed because I kept missing my mark, over an over getting blocked behind them a bit. Like 30 ppl having to start all over doing their things like 5x because of me, but I had no idea how to do this stuff. Eventually when they’d have to redo the take over and over and I felt super uncomfortable, Jason London started copping to missing HIS mark to the director and cast, when he wasn’t missing it, said he was not standing in the right place, when it was me, just to take the pressure off. He tried to take the heat for some guy he never knew or would ever see again. Nothing to gain, everything to lose. Says it all.

McConaughey on the other hand, was so cool and charismatic all round they gave him a bigger role, and set him on the way to stardom. Goes to show you need to be careful of behaviour on set - especially if it’s your first big role - as it may come back to haunt you. Pickford’s actor was a bit of a Cunt in real life and it maybe cost him a career; McConaughey so cool and chilled he gets more lines, and bigger role that set him up to eventually goes on to become a big star (his performance in true detective is masterful), whereas the Pickford actor has done nothing that I can remember after. (You can even pick up on McConaughey calling him ‘Prickford’ instead of Pickford, in the pool-room scene…….love that subtly - Matthew probably echoing what everyone thought of him on set there 🙌.
