Next up in the Royal Albert Hall cover series is Dazed and Confused. Classic signature fills from Bonzo on this one. I love how they played this song in 1970. They were discovering some of the key motifs that would become part of the set-pieces in later years. Watch for a cameo appearance of my mini-conga. 😋

George, I am just thrilled to watch you play. I know you must put hrs and hrs of seat time in to perfect JHB’s songs like you do. When I sit down behind my kit and work on the stuff you show us I am “ Amazed and Confused “ thank you for sharing your talent with us. Blessings, Brian

Drummers, please notice how this gentleman's hands are not being raised up over his head with each and every hit, yet there's still a lot of power in his playing. When a drummer is absolutely bashing on a drumkit with 100% power, the drums will actually choke out and resonate less than if you hold back a little. I've seen a lot of Bonzo videos, and he rarely reached up above his head to hit anything (when he was showboating he would, but not during a song).
@BONHAMOLOGY
@BONHAMOLOGY 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Dave. I really appreciate you noticing and saying this. That is absolutely correct about slaying the drums and the cymbals. There is a threshold, and they will choke out. It's important to use your wrists and forearms to pull the sound out of the drum, not beat it through!I really like that you emphasize that Bonham would lift his hands way up when he was showboating, that's part of the show, but he didn't always do that and especially after 1970 he refined his technique to have more power with control. He even talked about it in an interview. Thank you!

@@BONHAMOLOGY You betcha! I think a lot of drummers think hitting harder = bigger sounds when in fact, it's quite the opposite. Every drummer I've ever recorded that sounded huge was playing at a medium volume. And every drummer I've recorded that was bashing sounded small by comparison. Heck, old Joe Morello's drums sounded pretty gigantic, and he was playing quiet enough to hear the upright bass player standing 5 feet away with no amp!

@@davewestner Indeed. This ability to hold back some comes with time and experience. As I have matured as a drummer my finesse has increased..........sadly in my 50's my stamina has not!

Excellent point! The big sound also from playing at a level he can hear the entire room. A metaphor could be having 'big ears' or 'listening deep' to hear the reverb and the sound as a whole. The room acoustics are so good they demand near full attention on listening to the total sound with enough technique to be able to confidently let go and trust technique. Acoustics like that really open up the creativity when the overall sound is so true to the sound in the players imagination. I hear the ecstatic satisfaction of playing in one the best acoustically perfect big rooms ever in Bonham's fills and improv sections.

It's almost spooky hearing you play. You're not playing Bonham. You ARE Bonham. Seriously, it's hard to explain but there's something a little spooky about watching you. You're so good and so spot on it's almost psychologically unsettling. I mean, Jesus Christ, to need counseling after seeing someone play so well has gotta say something about the quality of the player! W.O.W.

I have a request for you. There's a zep out take called "lighter than air" which is just guitar and keyboards. Would have loved it had Bonzo been around for the recording of the demo. Next best thing I can think of is to hear what you think Bonzo might have done on a song like that. I can imagine a couple of things he may have done. It's a shame Zep ditched it because it's a catchy little number. if you search on YT *RARE LOST SONG* Led Zeppelin: Lighter Than Air you'll find it. maybe he would have played a big rock beat, maybe gone more soft like on Rain Song. perhaps a half time groove? I don't know. Might be fun to do, and would definitely be fun to hear what you come up with!
@davewestner
@davewestner 4 жыл бұрын
Oh, it's worth mentioning that the timing on that demo is a bit questionable. It sounds to me as if they were trying to drop in some odd bars but hadn't quite figured out how or where. Will be a bit of a pain in the counting department. It does have decent tempo though. Thanks!

Wow Mr. George couldn't be more awesome your cover of this RAH? You nailed the heck out of it. From the beginning, the middle of the crazy locomotive rhythm section to the anticlimactic of Jimmy Page getting in cue with the whole band back to the beginning of the song. And after all that the final sweet punch of Bonham finishing it up as soon Jimmy stops playing then it sounds like a nice broken up triple, like Bonham saying it on the drums that's a rap! Awesome performance by you George. I keep learning each day how you master these live performances and thank you for sharing with us Bonhamites as Terry Keating says lol
