My husband and I spent our honeymoon at Mountain Lake Lodge in June 1978.❤️The lake was still there and we went out on it in a small boat a couple of times. The movie came along about a decade later. Later, our family enjoyed the movie often as our kids grew up with it and the marvelous soundtrack, and the family lore of mom and dad staying “ at Kellerman’s”.

Hi Jordan! I live 45 miles from Lake Lure in NC. We stayed there and took that boat tour in the 90's. On the tour, they told us the lift happened there and pointed out the cove supposedly where it happened. Funny, right? Also if you decide to visit, another movie was filmed right there beside Lake Lure at Chimney Rock! "The Last Of The Mohicans". Some of that movie was filmed also at Lake James where they built a fort. It is very close to Morganton, NC which is my hometown. My cousin was an extra in Mohicans and the male black dancer in Dirty Dancing was from Morganton. About 20 miles away in Hildebran NC, there are some of the locations used in the"The Hunger Games". Enjoy you channel!💖

Another movie was also filmed nearby in Chimney Rock. Firestarter with Drew Barrymore when she was a little girl. Watch it & you'll see main street & other locations. I lived less than 2 hours east and our weekends were always spent in the mountains. So beautiful & peaceful! Air so Fresh!!! Lake Lure was so beautiful! (I hope it still is!)

@@qtbrniis You're exactly right! I had forgotten about that movie! It was a long time ago. We stayed there several times with my daughters when they were young. We took the boat tour which was very interesting and also went to Chimney Rock. It is very beautiful there. We went back a couple of years ago and it hasn't changed much. They have added a few new restaurants.

The Lake Lure Inn is where Patrick and Jennifer stayed during filming. They have two suites named for them that they used. The boat tour is awesome and the docks and beach are across from the inn. I was able to see the stairs and remmenants of the building where the hotel staff danced. Now all is left are the remmenants of the steps with new housing development around. Thanks Jordan for a great vlog of Smith mountain lake resort. ❤

There was a study done on what happened to the lake, and there was actually a " hole" that had opened in the bottom , and it emptied into a small underground crevice/cave area and it caused the lake to eventually drain out somewhere on the other side of a hill. When this movie came out, a friend of mine had a small video rental place at the edge of his yard. He said a young woman rented it like 31 times.

In 1987 this was a huge film over in the UK and I was only 12 yrs old. I watched it and everyone tried to do the dirty dancing dance to “ Do you love me” . I visited the Lake Lure location not long after the movie came out. It was a tourist attraction then but not many people really knew about it I guess. I took pics of Johnnys cabin, the stairs and bridge, the “dirty dancing” building that Baby takes the watermelon to and the building where the final dance scene and Baby in a corner scene was filmed. They had already torn down the staff cabins then but I took a picture of the big empty spot where they had been. This was of course before cell phones so just had my trusty little camera. Later yes the area caught fire and all the buildings burned. I guess that’s when the owner sold to developers and now that area is a gated housing community. That’s why you can only see the only thing left, the stone steps, from the lake because the steps are on private property now. They did manage to save some of the boards from the “gym” where the final dance scene was filmed and they put them in the Lake Lure Inn I believe, I could be wrong but think that’s where they are now.

I’m scanning through comments to see if someone had commented on the Lake Lure filming spots. Glad to find yours. I went as well in the fall of 2020. I was told the cabins were destroyed by arsonists and the gym was torn down. And yes, some of the flooring was salvaged and is now in the lobby at The Esmeralda Inn. Of course I had to stay there so I could walk on it and pretend dance with Johnny. 😂 I took the boat tour as well but they weren’t truthful about the lift scene in claiming it was done there. I did a tad of research and found an old interview with the writer of the movie - I think her fist name was Eleanor? She confirmed in the interview that it was done at Mountain Lake. I drove past the golf course where the one scene was shot of Baby asking her dad for money. And I’ll admit; I did drive into the area where the cabins and gym were. It’s now a gated community but the gate was wide open and no signs posted so I drove around for a few minutes. At that time, it was easy to see a bit of the remains of the gym. Also, I found the top of the famous steps. It’s on private property and of course, I didn’t get out of my car and trespass. Lovely homes have been built in that community. I was lucky to get some great photos. A fun trip! Oh, and I walked around in the Lake Lure Inn. I was told the cast stayed there while filming. It’s such a beautiful area to visit - especially in the fall. Highly recommend!

I enjoyed watching this. I worked with someone who was an extra in DD. She was one of the dancers in the final scene. She said everyone was so nice.
