Hi Daniel - is there a formal way to request games. I have a great "slow motion" attacking game from 1993 I would love to see you cover.

Fabulous! I had the pleasure of seeing a mini-match between Judit and Shirov some years later in Prague. Shirov was really at his prime then, and handily defeated Judit. Judit’s mother was there, who I had the pleasure of meeting, along with one of her coaches at the time. She had a rather large entourage with her, I believe. Kasparov was commenting in the VIP lounge, Yasser was also there with his wife (two of the nicest people you’ll ever meet), it was really a who’s who of chess. I was there every day they played, as I knew the organizer, and lucked into VIP tickets. As a bonus, even Woody Harrelson appeared towards the end of the match, and played a friendly against Kasparov in the VIP room. I was rooting for Judit, but it was just not to be...

Completely and utterly fab! I much like your enthusiasm here, Mr King, and this video has changed a glum afternoon into a chirpy one, thanks.

Just a note. On 1994 Shirov managed to reach no 2 in Fide ratings. Well, to be fair, these were the times when Kasparov had conflicts with Fide and was excluded from their lists (Karpov being no 1). Without that, we could count Shirov as number 3 in the world at that time. Makes Judit's game even more impressive.

Great analysis GM Daniel. This tournament was a double round robin of great players: Salov, Polgar, Ivanchuk, Ljubojevic, Anand, Shirov, Karpov, Kamsky. Lev Polugajevsky was supposed to be one of the players, but had to be replaced because of health issues. Maybe in the future we can have an all Ruy López tournament, better yet an all King's Gambit tournament. Good work as always.

Hi Danny, am reminded of a stunner that Judit played against Vladimir Epishin in the 90s, guess it was the Credit Suisse tournament, she crushed Epishin's Caro Kann.. can you pls cover that game if possible?

Judit made it so None of Shriovs pieces made it past the middle of the board except the Knight for like one or two moves ! Amazing to think of that for such a strong player like Shirov

Here is an idea for games: I do not think anyone has covered the games of World Champions or great players on their rise to the top, specifically, their teen years. Perhaps the games from when they played in the World Junior Championships. Thanks for the entertaining video.

I have a distant memory of this game, remembering g5 by Polgar and the possibility of the double knight checkmate. I think I saw it in the book 'Sicilian Love' (which I still have, somewhere). Sadly, no one ventured to play the Polugaevsky Sicilian at that Sicilian-themed tournament, as White gets all the fun in that variation.

Thanks so much. An amazing game that.. especially all those tactics on the long square diagonal. Judit best female player ever. And thought the "loser" Shirov a joy to watch. Do you feel Hou Yifan will match Judit, she played top level players too when young. But has disappeared a bit doing other study.
@PowerPlayChess
@PowerPlayChess 3 жыл бұрын
Hou Yifan is also a superb player, but how close is she to the top 10? But I don't think it is a big surprise when Yifan isn't 100% a professional player: she has been taking her studies very seriously and now has a position in a university in China.

Fantastic game; what imagination! I greatly admire both of these super GMs. I do wonder about Shirov's putting his Queen on the f3 square in the opening because it puts both the white Queen and Rook on the diagonal of the black Bishop on B7. Seems like that placement is just asking for trouble. And Polgar obliged. But Shirov is not known for cautious play.

I do not agree that g5 "gives a pawn for nothing". It gives a pawn for the unremovable knight on e5 which is a pride and joy for any sicilian player. Seeing this position, my first instict was actually "why not g5, that pawn of f4 should be dragged away"

Well, Shirov plays very aggressively and seldom backs down from a challenge. I think there were at least three moves where he could have bailed and castled long and played for a draw but that's not his style to do that (and it's possible he still thought he was better in those positions). He was going to force Polgar to prove herself and she did so convincingly.
