Would be interesting too see how much meat they actually took off the animals they shot. What's a bet they only took the backstraps and back legs at most, it's a shame how most kiwi's hunting in back country scenarios like this waste soo much of the shoulders, ribs and necks off the animals they kill. would be great if there was Wonton waste laws in NZ that prevented people from doing this.

Heres an idea, you chuck a pack on hike or fly into some public land. Walk 4hrs with your tent, sleeping bag, cooking gear, rifle and everything else. Shoot a stag, hind or yearling butcher the lot including the bullet damaged shoulders full of shattered bones, rib meat, back legs, back steaks and of course that neck meat. Load it all in your pack and carry it back home 4hrs. Film it make a youtube video explaining how your the man and showing everyone else how its done. Then and only then can you tell others how to hunt.

@@BGHNZ well already done that with stags before mate, for the last one made three trips of over 4 km each way to get everything back, and did that solo. Took days too do, but is worth the effort because I actually respect the animal in both life and death. The trick is boneing everything out in the field and putting it into game bags. Secondly, if you aren't bothered to go and put that effort in yourself, should you really be wasting the meat of a public resource just for your own fun? I get going out there and chasing trophy animals on public land, but maybe just take one quality animal, take the time and effort to get everything off it, and actually use the resource wisely.

@@BGHNZ ontop of that, what your saying isn't exactly impossible. in nations where Wonton waste is in affect, people do that more often than you think. In the States and Canada, two nations with probably some of the best wildlife populations and vast areas of public land, your not allowed to leave more than 3% edible meat on the carcass, and yet people still pack these animals many many miles to get everything off them. An these are animals such as elk, moose, caribou and bison, animals that are soo much larger than our red's Tahr and chamois. I'm not denying that the effort would not be a lot, not at all. I'm saying that the effort should be worth it if you truly respect these animals.

@@nareshclark8916 ok well chuck a video up of this with all the meat and show us rather than preaching from the couch? The US and Canadian model is the best model of game management in the world ive hunted there. Your not required to take bullet damaged meat by the way. But comparing that to NZ is completely wrong. We have an unchecked wild heards of animals. Humans are the key management tool to prevent over population and damage to the enviroment. Not sure if your aware but 1000s and 1000s of tahr and deer are shot by cullers and helicopters with some left to rot every year purely because there numbers are to high and there is no predators like wolfs, bears etc also keeping them in check. For every stag you shoot and carry out (whole) you should be shooting 4 or more hinds. The problem with your mentality is NZ doesnt need heros carrying bullet damaged meat it needs education to uneducated people like yourself that you need to shoot more animals and take whatever you can carry. Shooting 1 stag a year is doing nothing good for hunting in NZ.

@@BGHNZ you are right in some ways. Yes, I do know the DOC culling without meat recovery that do occur, but by no means think that is right (that's another argument all together). and yes, I agree that in some areas, large numbers of animals do need to be taken off the land to balance the ecosystems, and humans should take up this responsibility, 100%. And no, I wasn't meaning bullet damaged meat, but just the parts of the shoulders/ribs/neck that aren't damaged. But, it is simply unsustainable to expect a very small number of people to harvest soo many animals every single year, especially in a political climate where hunters get such a bad rap for wasting meat. Just like if you want to control a ungulate population with natural predators, you need volumes of hunters of the landscape to make an actual impact. Currently there are around 50,000 active deer hunter in the country. what the DOC and other hunter organisations should be doing is trying to greatly increase that number (to be on par with hunter participation in the states we could have 160,000-190,000 active deer hunters). This is where your actions come in. Instead of wasting all the meat off the front end of your animals, you should give that too people who have never hunted before. Getting that first taste of venison from a family friend is what got me out into the field, and I know that is true for soo many other people. And plus I did also take a hind that trip, after the stag was all finished up, and shared that with family and friends.
