Vertigo was successful largely because Karen Berger did a great job as the editor and cultivated relationships with the creative teams. She's long gone from DC and with no one of her caliber to take over, I don't see the new Vertigo stuff being any better than the average DC comic

Vertigo was definitely a "right time, right place" imprint, the late 80's and early 90's was a very febrile creative time in comics, I just don't get that atmosphere these days. Neo Vertigo will need to provide that it's not just a tribute band and that it's got something new to say.

Regarding Neil Gaiman, he doesn't have ownership rights to Sandman, DC does, he just seems to have final say over what they do with the characters.

Hi Wes , with DC’s relaunch of VERTIGO , I hope that we will get some TPB’s of lesser known titles that were never previously collected like Battleaxes , Angel and the Ape, Congo Bill , Cruel and Unusual , Egypt , The Extremist , Four Horsemen etc. Other than that DC seems to be the winner this week when it comes to comics according to Weird Science DC Comics website.

Wes, I've heard you say you are not exactly the biggest Sandman fan. The 90's Comic *Boom* ran me off. I only continued to keep going back to what the kids call my "LCS" (Great Escape in Louisville KY, which I've e recently had my 36 year anniversary of buying book there) & I would pick up Sandman trades, The Dreaming (Highy Recommended), The Invisables, & ANYTHING Dave McKean. Seriously, Wes. I feel you would love Sandman: Mystery Theater.

at the moment, if creators come up with an idea with original characters, they're going to go to Image so they keep the rights. that's Image's business model afaict. Image, and the other independents, are largely in a co-dependency relationship with DC and Marvel. I suppose DC's plan with Vertigo is to get some of that business back, which makes sense. Vertigo is also a strong brand, so why not use it?

I would like to see a very unconventional DC Comics and/or all-different, all-new Vertigo comic book of the members of the Endless Death, and her brother the Sandman (Dream and/or Morpheus) teaming-up with the Mystic Hellblazer (John Constantine) and the mysterious riddle known only as simply, "the Enigma" and have all four of them join forces as a Justice League Dark-styled team of demon hunters against the Preacher (Jesse Custer), the vampire Cassidey, and the assassin Tulip, who have all been mentally possesed by demons. Death, the Sandman and Enigma all have to take on human disguise forms in order to help Constantine fight them. So they use a magical spell to have Death, Sandman and Enigma mentally possess human host bodies. The hosts that they choose are Nightshade (Eve Eden and/or the Enchantress), for Death, Ragman (Rory Regan), for Dream/Morpheus, and Shadow Thief (Carl Sands), for Enigma. It would then be revealed that Count Werner Vertigo was actually the one who was manipulating things secretly from behind the scenes. He had used an all-powerful magical spell in order to cause the mental possessions of Jesse Custer, Cassidey and Tulip as a way of trying to increase his own power by using the power of "the Word" that Custer has access to, as well as find a way to make himself immortal by using Cassidey's vampire blood, and to have Tulip as his chief assassin in order to eliminate his political rivals in his home country so that he could maintain his own nation's dictatorship forever. I think that a comic book like that, which is suggested for mature readers only, would be an interesting new way to sell a DC/Vertigo comic book story using "mainstream" DC Comics comic book characters, and Vertigo characters combined. The ideal artists should be Chris Bachalo as the penciller, Mark Buckingham as the inker, and Steve Oliff as the colorist. The writer should be Peter Milligan.
