Hello Sorin, you made again the best video for this topic! Thank you! I want to ask you if its the same to use 6S with buck boost converter setted to the voltage that 3S would give instead of 3S3P.
@Sorin_DIY4 жыл бұрын
hi. you need to make the battery pack with the voltage closest to what you need. if you need the voltage of a 3S, you should make it 3S2P or 3S3P.
@ioanniskontos94394 жыл бұрын
@@Sorin_DIY Yes, o know but i cant find 3S2P BMS and i thought that a buck boost converter when increase voltage decrease current so if i make a battery with double current i can convert it to signle current with double voltage.
@ericklein50972 жыл бұрын
@@ioanniskontos9439 There is no such thing as a 3S2P BMS. BMS is not concerned with your parallel groups. The Amperage rating given on the BMS is for charge/discharge of the pack. What the cell is capable of delivering doesn't matter so long as the load is less than the max discharge. Say your 3S3P pack uses 20A cells so you could potentially deliver 60A. If your load will pull 7A max then you are fine with a 10A BMS (but I always suggest giving yourself more room due to cheap Chinese components). Not sure what you mean by double current or single current/double voltage but I think your confusion is about the amp rating of a BMS and the fact that amperage of the source only matters in that it is equal to or more than the load.

Hello Sorin. It was not clear for me the criteria to choose the 5s over the 4s for the buck converter. Is it because it has a higher margin even with the voltage drop at 2.7v for each cell? Is it because it gives you more power time? Both? Or maybe none of those reasons. Thank you.
@Sorin_DIY Жыл бұрын
Hi. with a 4S battery pack, the buck converter has a good efficiency, but depending on what BMS board you use, the lowest battery voltage (before the over discharge cut off voltage of the BMS) is too close to the minimal input voltage of the converter, so the converter may not work correctly with a low battery. a 5S battery pack has an efficiency a little lower than the 4S pack, but it doesn't have the low voltage problem for the converter. the 6S and 7S packs have a lower efficiency than the 5S pack, because the voltage difference between the input and the output of the converter is too high. so for that test the 5s is the best compromise considering the lowest input voltage for the converter and the highest efficiency.
@rodck333 Жыл бұрын
@@Sorin_DIY Thank you, it is perfectly clear now. On another note, I was preparing to build your 70wH fast charging powerbank to replace a rechargeable battery for a PAPR (breathe easy turbo by 3m) that is very expensive and hard to find. The issue is that I could not find any specifications printed on the small air pump nor online. I only know that the rechargeable battery it uses provides 8Ah at 6.25v per the photos of the label. I figured I could build your design and just set the converter to 6.25V, but since I dont know much about the matter yet, I would like to make sure your build set to my desired voltage would be adequate or if you would recommend something else or perhaps some changes to your original build.

This is such a great video for teaching beginners on how to properly select a buck or boost converter and what kind of efficiency to expect. The only thing I'm confused about is why you would choose such a high power cell for a very low-medium power load. Those VTC5's or were they 4's? are way overkill. Most cells can do half their rated discharge without taking a huge hit on capacity or cycle life. If I had to power a 3A load I'd be more than happy with an 8A or 10A continuous discharge rate.

useful informations. recently i planed to build a battery pack for my motor bike. initially bike has a lead acid battery which is almost dead. i want to replace. I just made a 3s pack and everything in the bike (horn, indicators etc) is working. But im not sure thats very safe. Can I charge using built in generator? 3s or 4s is best. can you do a video?
@Sorin_DIY4 жыл бұрын
hi. what's the original battery voltage? 12v? then you need a 3S battery pack. what's the maximum current draw of your motor bike? you probably need a lot of cells in parallel, maybe 3S6P or even bigger. you need high drain cells. you need a powerful BMS protection board for the battery pack, that can handle the maximum current. you can't use the original charger, you need a powerful 12.6V charger.
@arunbalakrishnan89784 жыл бұрын
@@Sorin_DIY in motor vehicle how can we use a 12.6 v chargers? is there any other ways. because i think there bult in alternator providing 14v or so thtas suitable for 12v lead acid.
@Sorin_DIY4 жыл бұрын
you can't use the bike alternator and replace the lead-acid battery with li-ion. the batteries have different charging topology. if the alternator gives a constant 14V, you probably can use a powerful step down converter with current limiting, to decrease the voltage to 12.6V. then you can use a 3S BMS protection board to charge the lithium battery pack. it needs more testing, maybe a few modifications to the alternator, but I think it will work. and when you're at home you can use a separate 12.6V charger to charge the battery pack.

Salut Sorin!
@Sorin_DIY4 жыл бұрын

You are using a lot of these 18650 batteries. Can you build a project that will test one of these batteries for a certain amount of time? For example, it will charge and discharge a cell for as long as you leave the device powered. So it starts by charging the cell, then when it gets to approx 4.2V it will stop charging and will start discharging up to approx 3V and then start charging again and so on and maybe measure either the number of times it charged the cell or the amount of energy used in the process. This would be very useful when you want to check the health of a cell over some time and/or a number of cycles. Imagine if you want to buy some cells from aliexpress or similar but you don't trust that the cells will last very long. You can buy one and have it in this device for a few months. A cell that is advertised for 2500mah will take less than 125 days to go through 500 cycles if the battery holds its capacity or less if it will decrease. After this, you could retest the capacity and see how much you have left. Best wishes!
@ericklein50972 жыл бұрын
You could rig something up with an arduino or set up an EBC A20 battery tester to do a bunch of cycles. I just don't think it is necessary. The cycle life will be fine so long as the capacity test and the max continuous discharge test match the manufacturers datasheet. It's pretty much impossible to make a cheap cell that will pass the capacity and discharge test only to flop out on you after 100 cycles.
