Run it with two controllers variable voltage or pulse width modulated and when you get up to speed turn down the fields leave the coils up high and you'll get a big boost in speed at a little cost of torque that is how we wire forklifts for high speed

Thank you for this video. I have just put a forklift motor into the transmission of our motor home .When I powered it up the rotation was backward to the rotation of the transmission.{ ok if I want to use reverse gear to go forward ha,ha ).So I reversed the leads which didn't change the motor direction .I am so happy to find your video to make it turn the right way ..

Add more gears drop the voltage or signal to your Fields after you get up to speed it'll be like overdrive!!

I have such a motor. Can i damage it in some way if i connect something wrong to for example a 12v 12ah battery?

I don’t think a DC drive used PWM it just rectified AC to DC and there is no inverter. That being said if you do find a drive to run it it needs to be configured for series wound

Control the speed by adding multiple resistors in series with the armature circuit, then shunt around each resistor with a manual switch or a set of actual contacts that can handle the current. Boom there's your caveman speed control.

I have a 1958 "Turf Rider IV" that was factory wired in just such a manner. Took me until reading your comment to know what the heckfire I was looking at lol. Many Thanks!

Feed it in just like the batteries, ,. Some big igbt bricks, would probably do it, I'd go to 48v, and put a blower fan on it, to keep it cool, it will pull about 2x the current as 36v, maybe make a manual contactor, to change directions, or use breakers, setup to change directions, this thing should run on dc and ac if the polarity doesn't matter, like a universal motor, I have a few fork lift motors, I was thinking ev conversation, then I'm thinking electric compact tractor, using either brushless motors for the mower. Or another series wound forklift motor for the whole deck, all the blades, possibly 4, on a 60" deck, 60"-72" with a gear box, to get reverse, and at least 3ranges, 2wirking speeds, and one traveling gear, so 4gears forward would be better, 6better than good,

You need an H bridge circuit rated at 150% voltage and 200% current. Then you could control it with a logic circuit and a wifi dongle if you wanted.

Dear good sir, It appears from your reply, you know more than the average bear about these series wound DC forklift motors… Is this true? My backyard, fiddle fart, DIY, overkill project, requires more expertise than rewiring the motor to switch direction. What I would like to do is use the motor as both the propulsion for a go/garden cart, and when switched to a different setting, the garden cart becomes a push sled that generates power and charges the battery. But here’s where it gets interesting… When the device is turned from the off position, to the push sled position, I would like to modulate the amount of resistance that is felt by the human pusher of the sled… Varying between zero and 20 mA. Where the zero setting is no resistance other than the friction of the gearing and the weight of the cart. For levels between one and 20, more and more resistance is required to overcome to move the cart, and subsequently generate battery charging power. And now to make matters even more interesting… I would like this 0 to 20 mA variable resistance setting to be a feature for both forward and reverse motion. This way, you can set a higher resistance for the push mode, and a lower resistance for the reverse pull mode. (Think M X push sled with internal resistance by Torque…) (except infinitely better because I’m the one designing it.) And now for the Cherry on top! A new user could approach the cart, identify themselves by selecting a username and login via the Wi-Fi connectivity, and be able to download via CSV file the log statistics for the millivolts and torque and rpm data generated during their exercise session. Eventually, a global group of fitness fanatics will become part of what I am now hereby naming, “ The Cart Hell, Cart Tell, Cartel” This is my dream. If you would be so kind as to point me in the direction you believe I should head, my gratitude will know no bounds.

@@clevereeves1861 You probably need a PM motor. Easier to control and can generate electricity too. If you use a load cell on your push pull bar/grip, you can sense the force and a microprocessor can vary the load. Adding audio input and a voice recognition program you could achieve what you seek.

Think you should use a insulated switch to start the motor. Not safe to terminate with bare hands.

Only if is a Universal motor... if not he will need to find or built a VFD circuit (SCR + Rectifier + proper Cap + control switch, etc.)
