Did you know Douglas County is home to the American Beaver? Beavers are amphibious rodents that live in streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes. They construct dams downstream from their lodge, made of branches, mud, and stones, that form large ponds. These ponds allow the beaver to carry branches and vegetation back to their lodge, where they are stored under the water for winter. Beavers must maintain the dam daily by filling holes with mud and adding branches. In this clip, you will see a beaver swimming along its dam, carrying branches, and a young beaver vocalizing to its parent.
