I so wanted to like Sean. His character was not black and white. Beautifully acted.
@meehow72
@meehow72 2 жыл бұрын
This is why living in a DV relationship is never black and white and it's so hard for people to leave. You want to try and fix that person (if you love them) but only they can help themselves.
@karenflores4987
@karenflores4987 2 жыл бұрын
yeah both Alex and Sean come from abusive families. Alex didn't grew up with his father but had the burden of a mother who refused to take care of herself and on the other hand Sean who actually grew with an abusive father and emotionally unavailable mother. It messes up kids. But one thing to learn is that just because you understand why the abuser acts that way, you are not obligated to stay to help "fix him" at the expense of your own sanity and wellbeing.
@dreamyanon5151
@dreamyanon5151 2 жыл бұрын
@@karenflores4987 I think it's exactly this. I think the nuance of him being black and white felt risky to the narrative in some ways (maybe people feeling Alex wasn't really victimized) but essential to understanding these kind of relationships. He isn't evil and he is flawed but that doesn't change the harm he has done and the way he was treating her. You are not obligated to stay or be sympathetic because of it. I'm reminded of the last conversation she has with the dad where he says he didn't see abuse, he just saw a young couple struggling, and kept saying Sean needed her support when she responded "I can't worry about him right now, I need to take care of me!".

They way Nick played Sean was so well layered. But that scene where her Mother has a breakdown, and he uses that to emotionally draw her back in was so raw and real. Even the way her Dad wouldn't stand up for her because he was the same way with her Mom. I knew as soon as Sean had to start working more hours again to keep her at home to himself, she would sink into the same routine, again, then taking her car away, and back to alcohol again. That cycle of abuse is so systemic and real in our society. The way her Mom kept going from Man to Man reminds me of my own mother as well as my mother-in-law. We need a better system to help women/people in general to get out.

Alex works hard then self sabotages anything she has achieved by allowing the people around her to ruin it. The same thing would of happened once ahe attended school if she were to take her mother with her. She would not be able to complete a 4 year program while also taking care of her mother. Her mother needs to be on meds. There are programs but the problem is that her mom refuses to be in one and take her meds. So what do you do?

From the abuse, to wanting me to abort, to addiction, the type of mother Shaun has, the audacity of taking me to court, money dwindling, the LONELINESS - feeling like you're in that deep dark well all alone or the couch swallowing you, but even when you want to stop... because some days you'll even want to die... you HAVE to fight... for that little soul relying on you. This was one of the best series on Netflix, well done to all the actors, such an amazing job. So moving, so victorious.

This series is important for exposing what it is like to live around and with mental illness and cycles of abuse. As an abuse survivor, it triggered the hell out of me to where I had to stop watching at several points to recover before I could continue. The writing was on point, and the acting was very very good. What also stood out was how the series used recurrent flashbacks to show the main character starting to recover and process traumatic memories. The use of the dark images where the main character is sucked into the couch, and at the bottom of the dark well, were accurate depictions of the emotional experience of soul murder in a relationship with an abuser. Truly an amazing piece of work in so many respects.

Also, I was binging "Maid" and "A Teacher" at the same time, and didn't recognize Mr. Robinson as "Eric" from "A Teacher". He brought a very different energy to these two demanding roles. It's just about an privileged white girl who in realy quit a decent job, complained about not being to buy organic milk with food stamps (or WIC), complained when the real life Nate kicked her but paid for her new place to stay and helped her move. It Reaks of privilege.

@@DavidJohnson-dp4vv no I’m not acting like it’s the pursuit of happiness Nate choose to help her she just came out of a domestic situation so by all means she had every right to take what he provided because he offered it and although she got a job fast I was just simply inspired by the fact that she was managed to pull herself and her child out of a bad situation

All 4 of these amazing people, amazing performances! Omg this series needs to keep going; this dynamic is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 The story is vitally important! The message hopefully sheds light on the cracks of this system that so many moms and their beautiful children (who need hope) fall into. This was my life, and it’s still this way 10 years later. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I felt so bad for sean throughout, like i was the hole time "i knew its not right, but i wouldve gone back to him " so later on when she did it hit so hard when it started cycling again. Its like a trap and you could see her the shell shock when she realised. This series had so much love though, truly made me belief that there is a soft underbelly to most people.

Yes! That’s the whole truth about abuse, the victim is always lured back into the abusive relationship, because women are predominantly nurturers, we try to see the good & possibility of fixing things. This is what makes us stay in such relationships. It was so important to show that & the series did a great job in showing the hows & whys of abuse. That said, Sean needed all the help, just like Alex. He too came from broken abusive home, but then again, men get all the sympathy unlike women. 😅

Magaret Qualley! I'm so into her recently. I like her hoodie here. She is the only one who wear hoodie among all videos on this channel. Her most power is here. Natualness. I watched almost her performance thesedays. I find her first The novitiate. It's fun and joyful see her every acting.She uses well her face and body and voice and those lively action give me katarsis. I can't wait to seeing MAID!!-from South Korea

1) Thank you, DC Film Girl, for pulling these wonderful interviews together! 2) Maid was my first exposure to Margaret, so I had to watch Novitiate, which was also excellent. I didn't know Margaret was in Once Upon a Time, so that's what's cued up for tonight! She says more with her eyes and facial expressions, than most actors do with their lines. 3) Nick was terrific as he swang back and forth between loving father/partner and a**hole abuser. I will soon be watching A Teacher. 4) Andie blew me away with her cringe-worthy, bipolar character - I wanted to leave the room every time she came on! Absolutely brilliant and 180 degrees from every other character I've seen her portray. If that doesn't earn her several major nominations, I will be very disappointed. 4) I was absolutely mesmerized by Anika's 'return from the Caribean scene'! The world around me came to full-stop during those 3 minutes of dramatic brilliance.

Maid was such an incredible series and yes I binged all 10 episodes! It was a real eye opener to Alex’s journey as a single mom at a young age with the added stress of battling the system. It made me feel grateful that I raised my two boys in a stable home with two loving parents. You just do the best you can for the welfare of your children. It was both joyful and painful. The acting was spot on and so tender in may parts. It was great!

This series, and this book, should be made into a play. And it should be done by high school drama productions and read in English classes. It is groundbreaking and it will pave the way for an exposure of abusive relationships and toxic male behavior.

Margaret, Nick and Andy did amazing melding into their roles. i was sucked in! it would be nice if there was a side story of Sean learning to fight his demons, especially in wanting to be a better father. its amazing how they also showed hw everyone has their own personal battles coming from all walks of life. all in all, it was amazing! Love seeing Nick portray different roles and hope to see more! great job everyone in MAID production!

This was an absolutely amazing program. Margaret Qualley was unbelievable and had such a layered performance. Her family once lived in Asheville, NC where I saw her once at our local theater (Asheville Community Theater). She was a young girl and it’s so surprising to see what a fabulous actress she has become. Her mother, Andie was very philanthropic with our local hospital. What an amazing, superb family. We all felt so lucky to have them living among us. Wishing her nothing but the very best in her career. I’m sure she will be someone to watch going forward. Asheville sends tons of love!!!!!!!

An extremely well produced series - incredible acting, complex characters, emotions and plots. and such a great sense of atmosphere and mood from the set design and lighting. Despite all that, the main thing that sticks out to me from this interview is to hear that the little girl playing Maddy has been forced into veganism by her parents! At any age it is catastrophic for the body and brain, but at such a young age, it is tragic... I can't stop thinking about.
@eileenc477

Just to address your incorrect and uneducated comments about veganism - catastrophic for the body and the brain? Look up how many top sportsmen and women are vegans, as are many philosophers, artists etc. How different is veganism to being forced into eating dead animals by your parents? This is 2021, so much is now known about the advantages of a vegan diet and the benefits to the planet, but you must have missed the memo 🤷🏻‍♀️

I had a social worker that helped me from the domestic violence. I just loved the way she really captured the love of her daughter. I couldn’t stop watching it until the end.
