30:45 - This part glosses over the fact you have to make sure that both flex cable IC cables here are lined up, not just the middle one he is talking about. If you solder down that second middle flex cable IC connector and the third/last one doesn't line up, it's game over because that third/last/smallest one has NO give to it at all. Aligning that third/last flex connector should probably be done second because the middle one DOES have give.

One small warning for the install, the test pad for the reset circuit is just a tiny solder blob and if ur not careful it can wick onto your iron tip leaving a dryhole that's nearly impossible to replace

citrus3000psi It was kinda funny when it happened it just sucked up on the tip as soon as I touched it, it happened so fast I was speechless. Woo hoo! Just finished my install! Thanks for making this walkthrough, it made this install a lot clearer. Couple questions about the written guide compared to the video. 1.video shows wiring for reset, etc. but not in written? 2. Written shows different mount location (top of heat sheild) for wifi ant if using gdemu. Is there a difference since we're supposed to disconnect the gdemu before updating anyway? I thought doing the smd recap was difficult but man that ribbon cable is tiny!

The written docs should be your guide. The video only as an extra tool. The written guide explains the optional wire for both the GDEMU and USB-GDROM? Top of heat shield is new the mount for the wifi antenna. You can likely leave your GDEMU in place during upgrading with this antenna location.

@dallase14 ай бұрын
I had my Dreamcast DCHDMI modded by Stone Age Gamer and I only see 2 screws at the back of the Dreamcast Where the DCHDMI is installed and not that hole where screw you said will poke through the sticker. Does this mean they did it the way that is likely to cause problems or damage to the HDMI Port, DCHDMI or that capacitor? I ask because my DCHDMI modded Dreamcast will get a no video when it goes to load a Game if I'm using the GDROM or when it tries to go to the M.O.D.E menu when I use the MODE and will also sometimes reboot as if something is shorting or maybe the ribbon cable soldered to the Video and Audio Chips are disconcerting or shorting out ? Maybe because they used that hole by where you said the screw hole will hit capacitor and did not move the capacitor so over time it cause damage to the capacitor or the DCHDMI board? I have no soldering skills at all so I can't try to check it out and fix it if needed or risk remove the RF Shield to see if that capacitor is touching the screw in the screw hole. I don't want to risk damaging the DCHDMI board or the ribbon cable that is attached to the Video and Audio Chips. I now have a over $800 paper weight unless I can find someone who can check it out and possibly fix it if it does not cost too much.

I'll do him a favour before I pack for dispatch .. let's update from 4.7 to 4.9. Connect to wifi and do the update... system starts and video goes all wacked out.. video cuts out. power off on and on.. no more LED activity... so now I have to butcher a serial adapter together and get this brick fixed before getting onto other people's consoles.

I've done some soldering myself, mostly controller PCBs for fighting games. I don't understand how when you are soldering the IC with a flat tipped soldering iron that the leads aren't bridged together? You literally just rub and solder two leads at a time and they just magically stay separated instead of being soldered together. I've struggled with this doing fine soldering in the past. Is it mostly just using very little solder?

I tried this mod myself and I was not succesful, full disclosure, I am new to this hobby and my only experience was installing a modchip on a PS1 before trying this, from that to this, the jump in skill is ridiculous to recount the damage i've done: I've trashed 2 flex cables up to now I've trashed the video chip on my console because of a bad flex cable install, a poor connection caused a shortcircuit and made a crater between two pads on one side of the video chip I removed the video chip now with my hot air station to assess the damage, and during the removal, I screwed up more and ended up lifting several pads off the PCB now my dreamcast mobo is REALLY REALLY screwed, will go back in to try and repair the missing pads but I've been told it's done for I've been told that it is not worth the time to repair all those pads I lifted and that I should just get a disposable mobo and practice there before going back into this it's been an expensive attempt but I wanted to give it a try anyway so yes, please contain yourself from doing this mod if you have never soldered a flex cable before, it is extremely challenging, everything from the temperature of the solder tip, to the type of tip, to the alignment of the flex cable, it's just so many little things that once one goes out of control you are screwed.

The picture set to 1080p output seems not sharp..looks more like blurry and jaggy. its not a clean picture like from the first DCHDMI mod i have in my other dreamcast.i also noticed that the dreamcast boot up logo shows dither in certain areas...you can see a dithered dreamcast logo before it appears. 3. When you set it to 960p output , the picture is completely stretched horizontally. on my dchdmi modded dreamcast there is no horizontal stretch on the 960p mode. I used the same HDMi cable for testing. on my DCHDMI modded DC tere are not such problems...on my DCHDMI HW2 i have those problems with the same cable and the same port on the TV. the guy tells me that he tested all and it worked perfectly. does anybody have an idea whats going on?? thank you very much!

Thanks for the install guide! I installed mine yesterday and 99% it works fine, got all hearts at the info Menü und updated to the latest firmware. The only issue I habe is that I only get a video signal out to the tv if a VGA box is also connected. Do you have any ideas to fix this?

Do you do installing services? Like I would love to send you my dreamcast

I do not, as I get overwhelmed easily with too many request. However I will be at Too Many Games this June. I'll have a booth with around 45 pre modified dreamcasts that I have personally done.

What Flux do you use?

Kester 959T. It doesn't flow nearly as well as other paste. But it cleans up extremely easy.

Soldered everything (+ optional GDemu cable) and don't seem to have a bridge on the chips. Anyhow, it boots up to the date screen, but after some seconds the screen disappears and something starts to beep in my DC (sounds like a coil). Doesn't matter if I'm using GDemu or original GD drive. Ribbon cable also looks OK under microscope. I'm using the DC with a pound cable, but I don't think it comes from that 'cause it worked before the mod. Also my fan doesn't spin anymore -_- Any suggestions where to look for the problem? EDIT: OK, I broke one pin of the fan socket. Now it boots to GDEmu menu. I just have to wait for my miniHDMI to HDMI converter :D

What is the temperature set that you use for soldering ( in Celsius please ;-) ?
@citrus3000psi5 жыл бұрын
I keep my iron at around 300C sometimes a little a higher.

citrus3000psi I have done the soldering but the video comes only after 15 seconds and sometimes doesn’t come. Do you have an idea ? If I change the settings from 1080 to 960, the screen goes off and no more picture ( 960 works fine on my television normally). It seems really long to get a picture and even worst just changing some displays. If I had a bad connection I shouldn’t have a picture at all.

I am not sure if citrus3000psi is reading comments here but can someone mention the Tip he is using. I was practicing on a busted board and ended up with a lot of solder on the pins.
@citrus3000psi5 жыл бұрын
Its just a small bevel tip. The tip is not the key here. The main "trick" is how little of solder you need to put on the tip. A lot of solder will flow up from the footprint on the smd into the cable. Just barely any solder is needed.

I'd really like to know which screwdriver you're using their lol. Looks like a Dewalt. What model, and the attached bits, etc.

Yes it a Dewalt Gyroscopic Screwdriver. I love the thing. It just takes standard bits. Nothing special.
